'Tan Sri' arrested in Penang over MBI probe

KUALA LUMPUR: A "Tan Sri" suspected of acting as a proxy to the mastermind behind the Mobility Beyond Imagination (MBI) Ponzi scheme has been arrested.
The 53-year-old man was detained around 2am at the side of a road in Penang, a source confirmed.
It is learned that the suspect helped launder illegal proceeds from the scheme.
"The man had just returned to Malaysia," the source said, adding that police will seek a remand order against him.
He is currently being held at the Jinjang lockup.
Meanwhile, Commercial Crime Investigation Department acting director Datuk Muhammed Hasbullah Ali confirmed the arrest.
Hasbullah said investigations are ongoing.
The "Tan Sri" is the latest individual arrested under Op Northern Star, which began on April 18.
The operation previously saw the arrest of five individuals, including another "Tan Sri" and a "Datuk Seri", over their alleged involvement in a Ponzi scheme in a neighbouring country.
To date, RM3.51 billion worth of assets — including a hotel, durian farms, luxury vehicles, watches, and bank accounts — have been seized and frozen.
The MBI Group International was founded by Tedy Teow, a businessman dubbed "Jho Low 2."
Teow is infamous for schemes that have landed him in hot water with authorities in several countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and China.
He is currently in custody in China, having been extradited there last year following his arrest by Thai authorities.
He is said to have deceived two million people in China into investing billions.

Engineer loses RM196,610 to 'high returns in an hour' scam

KULAI: An engineer, 55, lost RM196,610 after falling victim to a fraudulent investment scheme that promised up to 20 per cent returns in just an hour. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee said the victim lodged a report yesterday after realising he had been conned after downloading an application. "The victim made nine transfers totalling RM196,610 into four bank accounts between Aug 1 and 12, after he was promised almost immediate profits. "He saw RM307,626 in profits reflected in the investment app he downloaded, after making the online transfers. "However, when he attempted to withdraw the money, the account was blocked," Tan said in a statement today. The case is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of one to 10 years, whipping and a fine, upon conviction. Tan urged the public not to fall for schemes offering unrealistic returns and to use online resources, such as the Commercial Crime Investigation Department's Semak Mule portal, to check suspicous telephone and bank account numbers. The public can contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997 or the CCID for advice or to report suspected scams.

Singaporean sentenced to 72 years, 24 strokes for ghastly murder of wife, stepson

In his oral judgment, the judge described the accused's actions as cruel, including placing his wife's head on the ceiling of their house. 18 Aug 2025 04:08pm A Singaporean man was today sentenced to 72 years in prison and 24 strokes of the cane by the Melaka High Court after being found guilty of murdering his wife and stepson, whose dismembered remains were discovered in a bushy area six years ago. Photo for illustrative purposes only - 123RF MELAKA - A Singaporean man was today sentenced to 72 years in prison and 24 strokes of the cane by the Melaka High Court after being found guilty of murdering his wife and stepson, whose dismembered remains were discovered in a bushy area six years ago. Judge Datuk Anselm Charles Fernandis handed down the sentence on Shahrul Nizam Zuraimy, 36, at the end of the defence case. The court ordered him to serve 36 years' imprisonment and 12 strokes for each charge, with the sentences running consecutively, starting from the date of arrest on Oct 11, 2019. In his oral judgment, Anselm described the accused's actions as cruel, including placing his wife's head on the ceiling of their house, with no reasonable justification, apparently to conceal the crime and the victims' identities. Photo illustrated by Sinar Daily "The court considered the concept of life for life, as well as the emotions of the victims' family members. However, it must also look at the case as a whole and the wider public interest. "The court also took into account the defence's submissions, aggravating factors presented by the prosecution, and the victims' impact statements from the mother and sister of the deceased, who testified to suffering emotional trauma and health problems; besides the victim's surviving children also growing up without a mother's love,' he said. Shahrul Nizam was charged with two counts of murder for causing the deaths of his wife, Norfazera Bidin, 27, and her son, Muhammad Iman Ashraf Abdullah, 11, at a house in Taman Merdeka Jaya, Batu Berendam, Melaka Tengah, between 6pm on Oct 6 and 7.30am on Oct 7, 2019. The charges, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carry the death penalty or a maximum 40-year prison sentence. If the death penalty is not imposed, whipping of no fewer than 12 strokes is mandatory. Earlier, Norfazera's mother and sister, in their impact statements, urged the court to impose a commensurate sentence, including the death penalty, citing the trauma endured by the family and the brutality of the killings. Deputy Public Prosecutors Mohd Asri Abd Rahman Sidik and Nur Syazwanie Marizan also sought either the death penalty or consecutive prison sentences, stressing that the accused had betrayed his role as protector of the victims. "The accused was supposed to protect the victims, but instead killed them, including a child who was his stepson. The court must balance public interest with the severity of the cruelty committed,' they argued. The prosecution also noted that the factor of regret raised by the defence should be weighed carefully, as although the accused eventually surrendered, he initially misled the victims' family about their whereabouts and fled to Singapore after the crime. Defence lawyers Andrew Lourdes and Chua Yong Yi pleaded for leniency, arguing that their client had repented and regretted his actions, and should be given a second chance. - BERNAMA
