Punjab government not to purchase banned Pusa 44 variety of paddy: Chief minister Bhagwant Mann

Time of India21-05-2025

Patiala: Chief minister
Bhagwant Mann
on Wednesday said the state govt would not purchase the
water-guzzling paddy variety
Pusa 44, which had been banned by the govt. He said anyone sowing this variety would do so at their own risk.
Replying to media queries on Wednesday, Mann said the govt had already declared that farmers could go ahead with short-term varieties, including PR 126, 127, 128, or PR 129. However, Pusa will not be purchased as it takes 152 days, and if anyone is sowing the banned water-guzzling variety, they will be responsible for it, he added.
There are reports that some farmers are preparing their nursery to sow the long-duration Pusa 44 variety after obtaining seeds from the neighbouring state of Haryana, said Mann.
Replying to a query on the political outcry over the appointment of non-Punjabis as chairpersons of various boards, Mann condemned former deputy CM and Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, saying that during their rule, the SAD appointed the Punjabi University VC from Delhi.
"Punjabiyat is our mission. The opposition leaders are even making false propaganda that residents from Haryana are getting jobs in Punjab, but we are giving jobs to Punjabis and have made the Punjabi written test compulsory for govt jobs.

Sometimes, we have to bring 'specialists' from other states. Our specialists from Punjab are working in other states. Four Punjabis have become ministers in foreign nations," the CM highlighted.
Earlier, Mann addressed a gathering after reviewing ongoing development works in Ghanouri Kalan, Ghanour Khurd, Kataron, and Changali villages. He said various govt departments were working in coordination with each other for the welfare of the rural population.
Mann said Punjab lived in its villages and that the ultimate goal of a progressive and vibrant Punjab could only be achieved through clean and green villages. He said the state govt had already placed major emphasis on achieving this goal.
"Dhuri will be developed as a model city through holistic development, backed by adequate funding. The city will soon be equipped with world-class healthcare and educational facilities, improved roads, clean ponds, water recharging systems, and canal water irrigation.
Significant resources have already been allocated to ensure the comprehensive development of villages in the segment. There is no shortage of funds for development, and the state govt is making all possible efforts to ensure the holistic progress of villages," said the CM.
"A detailed roadmap has been drafted to boost ongoing development efforts in both urban and rural areas. In addition to development, efforts are being made to place the state on a path of high economic growth for the benefit of its people," he added.
The CM revealed that a total of Rs 13.98 crore had been issued for 129 development projects in these panchayats, out of which 93 projects worth Rs 8.67 crore had been completed.
He further said 36 projects worth Rs 5.31 crore were currently in progress and would be completed soon. Furthermore, based on the needs of the five village panchayats, an additional grant of Rs 12.19 crore had been issued for 32 more development projects, said Mann.

Ludhiana: If I can influence VB, Mann should resign, says Ashu

Continuing with his attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, Punjab Congress working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu on Saturday said that if his writ really runs in the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), 'chief minister Bhagwant Mann does not deserve to hold his position even for a day as this means he has lost the confidence of and control over his government and departments'. Asked about his reaction over AAP leaders repeatedly claiming that he had himself got the summons issued from the Ludhiana VB SSP to gain sympathy, Ashu retorted, 'If that is really true, then don't you think Bhagwant Mann, who is the chief minister and heads the home and vigilance departments, deserves to resign as he has no control over his own departments?' 'The AAP is completely frustrated and panic stricken as it has started feeling the ground slipping out from beneath their feet. Right now, the AAP candidate is at the third place and you never know his fortunes may dip further to the fourth place,' he said while claiming that the AAP candidate had confided it to his close aides that he had taken an unnecessary plunge into electoral politics. To a question that CM Mann had justified the appointment of outsiders at various positions in the Punjab government by saying that talented people from one place can be posted at other places, Ashu asked, 'Tell us whether there has ever been any appointment of any Punjabi from Punjab in Delhi during over a decade of AAP rule there.' 'Their only aim and purpose today is to loot and rob as much as they can, knowing well that their time is up and over,' he observed, while adding, 'but let it be clear to them that they will be held to account for each and every penny they looted and robbed from Punjab'. 'You implicated people like me in false cases. Just remember the cycle of justice does take full turn and everybody will be held accountable,' he told the AAP government. Asked to comment about the AAP and the BJP candidates, Ashu said, 'It is for the people of Ludhiana to decide and judge and I leave it to their judgement by presenting my case in front of them. In a democracy, everyone has the right to put up and present his case in the people's court and let the people decide.'

Haryana: Chargesheet filed against Goldy Brar, 4 others in Gurugram grenade attacks case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed charges in court against Canada-based gangster-terrorist Satwinder Singh alias Goldy Brar and four others for orchestrating grenade attacks on two Gurugram clubs in December, the agency announced on Saturday. The December 10, 2024 attacks targeted Warehouse Club and Human Club in Sector 29, with investigators linking the violence to a broader conspiracy by the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) to spread communal disharmony across Haryana. The chargesheet names Sachin Taliyan, Ankit, Bhawish and US-based Randeep Singh alongside Brar. All accused except Brar and Randeep Singh have been arrested. The NIA investigations revealed that Brar, a designated terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, masterminded the conspiracy from his base in Brampton, Canada. The agency said the terror syndicate actively extorts money, raises funds, procures explosives and weapons, and intimidates civilians to threaten national security. Brar, a close associate of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, faces multiple terror cases. The NIA has already charge-sheeted him for the December 2023 murder of Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi, president of the Hindu right-wing Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena, in Jaipur. He is also wanted for orchestrating the May 29, 2022 assassination of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Brar was designated a terrorist under UAPA in January 2024. From Canada, Brar allegedly supervises Bishnoi gang operations whilst assisting pro-Khalistan outfits including BKI in weapons smuggling, drug trafficking and targeted killings, the agency stated. How Ggm blasts are linked to Chandigarh A web of inter-state criminal links has emerged in the investigation into the Gurugram bar blasts, with UT police uncovering key connections to Chandigarh and Haryana's Hisar district. Two accused, Ajit and Vinay, played a direct role in the attacks carried out at two popular Sector 26 bars, acting on the instructions of gangster Randeep Malik. Ajit and Vinay, both Hisar natives, had allegedly delivered a bomb to a person for the Gurugram blasts and were arrested by Chandigarh police after a brief encounter in Hisar on November 29 last year. The duo was involved in hurling bombs at Seville Bar Lounge—owned by rapper Badshah—and De'Orra Dance Bar in Sector 26, Chandigarh, between 3:15am and 3:30am on November 26. Investigations revealed that gangster Randeep Malik, a Jind native now based in the USA, orchestrated the blasts. Malik directed the accused to collect explosives in Karnal and a pistol from Sahil, a murder accused lodged in Jind jail. The handover took place near Rohtak. According to Chandigarh police, Malik, previously booked in 2011 for assault and intimidation, recruits youth from Hisar and Bhiwani into crime. He advised the accused to turn off their phones and escape to Hisar and then Rajasthan after the blasts in Chandigarh. Malik coordinated the attack with gangster Goldy Brar, whose approval allegedly preceded the blasts, the cops said.

Punjab's land pooling policy to benefit of Kejriwal's ‘Delhi friends', alleges Sirsa

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa launched a blistering attack on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of trying to seize the land of Punjab farmers under the guise of newly launched land pooling policy by the AAP government in the state. Sirsa, who was in Ludhiana to campaign for BJP's Ludhiana West bypoll candidate Jiwan Gupta, alleged that Kejriwal is plotting to seize land from Punjab's farmers 'and hand it over to his 'Delhi' friends'. 'Just as Kejriwal had pressured Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann to appoint his loyalists to powerful posts in the state administration, he is now engineering a systematic land grab. This land acquisition policy is not meant for Punjab's development but to transfer the land of hardworking Punjabi farmers to Kejriwal's associates from Delhi, who will profit from it,' Sirsa alleged. 'This is the same playbook used by former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, whose similar policy is now under a CBI probe,' the minister added. He further claimed that the AAP-led Punjab government is blindly replicating controversial and failed Delhi policies. Referring to the excise policy that led to the infamous liquor scam in Delhi, Sirsa said that under Kejriwal's and Manish Sisodia's pressure, the same model has been pushed into Punjab. 'When the probe began in Delhi, they were quick to scrap the policy there, but instead of discarding it altogether, they exported the same blueprint to Punjab,' Sirsa alleged. Sirsa accused Kejriwal of shifting his power base to Punjab after losing political traction in Delhi. 'Today, Kejriwal uses Punjab's official cars, helicopters, and even police protection and is barely seen in Delhi. Even his staff, including his secretary, driver, and peon, are being maintained through Punjab's treasury,' Sirsa claimed. Sirsa said that Punjab's youth are being sidelined, with Kejriwal giving preference to his Delhi cronies. 'It is disgraceful that people from outside are being prioritised in a state where the youth are struggling for employment,' he said. Sirsa said under AAP-rule Punjab's fiscal health was worsening. 'In 2022, Punjab's debt stood at ₹2.83 lakh crore, a burden that took 50 years to accumulate. In just two years under AAP, an additional ₹1 lakh crore has been added. Punjab is now the second most indebted state in the country, with a total debt of ₹3.83 lakh crore,' he pointed out. Reacting to Sirsa's accusations, AAP spokesperson Neel Garg stated that before 2007 no one heard about the word 'Chitta' and it was under the SAD-BJP alliance regime that the influx of drugs ruined the youth of Punjab. 'The land pooling policy is for the welfare of farmers, but the parties who support land mafia are opposing the policy,' Garg said.
