Al-Ahram Weekly14-07-2025
France awarded the Légion d'Honneur (Legion of Honour) to Dr. Gihane Zaki, Member of the Egyptian Parliament and Cultural Diplomat, on Sunday in recognition of her exceptional contributions to cultural diplomacy, academic thought leadership, and the advancement of intercultural understanding.
Granted by presidential decree, the Legion of Honour, the country's highest national distinction, is conferred exclusively through nomination—never by personal application—and honours individuals, French or foreign, who have demonstrated outstanding merit in either civilian or military life.
The decree, issued by French President Emmanuel Macron and published in the Journal Officiel, elevated Dr. Zaki to the rank of Chevalier (Knight), citing her unwavering commitment to the universal values of peace, liberty, and human dignity.
The honour is traditionally presented at the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris, a symbolic venue that reflects France's historic ties with international partners across the globe.
Dr. Zaki has earned international recognition for her work at the intersection of archaeology, cultural heritage, and diplomacy. In her capacity as a parliamentarian, she has played a prominent role in shaping policy dialogue around cultural preservation and cross-border collaboration.
Before assuming her current position, Dr. Zaki served as Director of the Egyptian Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where she championed artistic exchange between Egyptian and European creative communities.
Her academic portfolio includes teaching roles at leading universities, where she delivered lectures on art history, intercultural studies, and heritage diplomacy. A prolific writer, Dr. Zaki has authored numerous publications exploring Egypt's cultural legacy and the transformative role of the arts in community development. Her work blends rigorous archaeological scholarship with contemporary perspectives on identity and global citizenship.
She has also collaborated with international institutions such as UNESCO and ICCROM, while holding academic affiliations with both the Sorbonne University and Senghor University.
As a cultural diplomacy expert, Dr. Zaki has represented Egypt at high-level global forums, fostering enduring relationships with European institutions, research centres, and cultural organisations worldwide.
With this honour, she joins a distinguished group of Arab and Egyptian recipients of the Legion of Honour, including Mahmoud Fakhry Pasha, Mohamed Al-Fayed, Hazem El-Beblawi, and Mona Zulficar. Recent honourees have also included senior officials from the United Arab Emirates, underscoring the continued depth of France's engagement with the Arab world.
Beyond celebrating Dr. Zaki's personal achievements, the award stands as a testament to Egypt's enduring role as a cultural bridge between civilisations—a mission she has long championed throughout her career.

Lebanon, and Fairuz, bid iconic composer Ziad Rahbani farewell

Hundreds of people in Lebanon paid tribute Monday to iconic composer, pianist and playwright Ziad Rahbani, who died over the weekend. His mother, Fairuz, one of the Arab world's most esteemed singers, made a rare public appearance. Rahbani, also known as a political provocateur, died Saturday at age 69. The cause of death was not immediately known. His passing shocked much of the Arab world, which appreciated his satire, unapologetic political critique and avante-garde, jazz-inspired compositions that mirrored the chaos and contradictions of Lebanon throughout its civil war from 1975 until 1990. He also composed some of his mother's most famous songs. فيروز في وداع ابنها زياد Fayrouz bids farewell to her son Ziad — Annahar النهار (@Annahar) July 28, 2025 The Rahbani family was a cornerstone in Lebanon's golden era of music theater that today is steeped in idealism and nostalgia in a troubled country. Top Lebanese political officials and artists paid tribute after the death was announced. Rahbani, a leftist Greek Orthodox, often mocked Lebanon's sectarian divisions in his work. Hundreds of people holding roses and photos gathered by Khoury Hospital near Beirut's busy Hamra district, solemnly singing some of his most famous songs and applauding as a vehicle carrying his body left its garage. Reem Haidar, who grew up during the civil war, said Rahbani's songs and their messages were what she and others associated with at a time when there was 'no nation to belong to.' The vehicle made its way to a church in the mountainous town of Bikfaya before burial in the family cemetery. Fairuz, 90, had spent many years away from the public eye. Wearing black sunglasses and a black veil, she greeted visitors who came to pay respects. She had not been seen publicly since photos surfaced of her meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, who visited her residence in 2020 to award her France's highest medal of honor. In recent years, Rahbani also appeared less in the public eye, yet his influence never waned. Younger generations rediscovered his plays online and sampled his music in protest movements. He continued to compose and write, speaking often of his frustration with Lebanon's political stagnation and decaying public life. Rahbani is survived by his mother and his sister Reema and brother Hali. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

UN Conference Reaffirms Global Commitment to Two-State Solution Amid Escalating Gaza Crisis

Ahmed Emam A high-level United Nations conference on the peaceful settlement of the Question of Palestine is set to conclude on Wednesday, July 30, with strong international backing for the two-state solution. Global leaders have called for urgent action to end the Israeli occupation and establish a sovereign Palestinian state living in peace and security alongside Israel. Organized by the United Nations and co-chaired by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the French Republic, the conference aimed to reaffirm the international community's commitment to the two-state solution and to coordinate practical steps for its implementation.** Opening statements were delivered by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot, and Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa. Three high-level roundtable discussions took place during the event, including a key session on the humanitarian situation and reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip, where the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen. In a compelling address, President of the UN General Assembly Philemon Yang warned that the cycle of violence between Israelis and Palestinians cannot continue unchecked. 'The atrocities in Gaza and the endless violence make it clear: we cannot carry on like this,' he said. 'This conference must mark a decisive turning point. If we do not resolve this conflict through a two-state solution, peace and stability will remain out of reach—not just for Palestine, but for the wider Middle East.' Yang added, 'We can no longer tolerate delays or excuses. The time to act is now. This conference must set an irreversible course toward realizing the two-state solution.' In the lead-up to the conference, Ambassador Maged Abdel Fattah, Permanent Observer of the Arab League to the UN, emphasized the Arab League's firm opposition to the forced displacement of Palestinians. Speaking to Al-Qahera News, he condemned what he described as Israel's deliberate targeting of UN organizations in Gaza and called for a voluntary international arms embargo on Israel. He also noted that Israel is currently withholding $3 billion in Palestinian tax revenues and highlighted what he described as a significant shift in European public and political sentiment in favor of the Palestinian cause. The conference concluded with a unified call for practical steps to implement the two-state solution and to halt the worsening humanitarian catastrophe. Delegates stressed the urgency of political commitment, coordination, and accountability to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani
