Premier League runners-up Arsenal beat Italian giants AC Milan in a pre-season friendly at the National Stadium in Singapore. At a post-match press conference on Wednesday (23 July), Arsenal's manager Mikel Arteta commented on the noticeable empty seats in the venue. Read more in our live blog below, including the latest local and international news and updates. Toa Payoh flat fire: Male victim known to be a 'hoarder' A fatal fire on 22 July in a flat located at Toa Payoh Lorong 1 claimed the lives of two, and a day after, residents told The Straits Times (ST) that they believed one of the victims was a "hoarder". The blaze engulfed a three-room flat in Block 173, forcing over 100 residents to evacuate the building around 7.30 pm. A 56-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman were found lying motionless in a unit, according to the police. They were pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic. A resident, identified as Mr Wong, claimed to be familiar with the dead man. The 45-year-old told ST on the morning of 23 July, "He collects a lot of things and places them along the corridor." "You can look at what's left from the fire... dolls, chairs, carpets, tables, shoes. They are a fire hazard," he added. According to him, the dead man had supposedly been told by some 'government people' to clear the unwanted belongings. Two other residents told ST that the man kept discarded items from others. When asked for comment, the authorities said the dead man was not known to have an official record of hoarding problems. For more on the Toa Payoh fire, read here. "Obviously to win as well, and yeah, regarding individuals, [Sako] was at a really good level, Bukayo is one of them. We have pushed him through the summer as well, to catch up on other things that he had to, to give himself the best chance to explore his qualities, which are better and more highlighted, and with more impact than physically, at the highest level." 5 teens arrested for threatening boy with knife, 2 charged with causing hurt
SINGAPORE – Five teenagers between ages 12 and 15 who were involved in a bullying incident in which one boy had a knife held to his throat were arrested on July 10 for suspected rioting offences. In response to queries from The Straits Times, the police said two of the boys, aged 13 and 15, were charged on July 16 with causing hurt. The 15-year-old was also charged with carrying an offensive weapon in a public place. In a video posted on social media platform Xiaohongshu on July 23, a boy seems to be holding a knife to a smaller-sized boy's throat. The incident occurred on July 6, said the police. The knife appears to be a butterfly knife, which is a type of weapon considered more dangerous and therefore, subject to stricter rules. Other weapons that fall under the same category include knuckle dusters, flick knives and the claw-shaped karambit knives. After pressing the knife to the victim's throat, the boy asks him to tell the truth. When the victim assures him that he is not lying, the boy slaps him forcefully on the face. The victim is then offered two choices as punishment, although it is unclear what were the circumstances that led to the situation. The assailant and another boy – who is off-camera – can be heard giving him the option between getting punched in the stomach five times or stripping naked. The victim opts for the second choice and starts taking off his clothes before the video ends. Police investigations involving the other three boys are ongoing. Those found guilty of possessing a dangerous weapon can be jailed for up to five years and get at least six strokes of the cane. Responding to queries, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said it is aware of a video of an assault circulating on social media. It said: 'Such behaviour is not acceptable and has no place in our society. The perpetrators involved are under police investigations.' MOE added that the school has been providing support to the affected student and his family. Source: The Straits Times © SPH Media Limited. Squeaky-Clean Singapore Steps Up Crackdown on Vapes
Hi, it's Audrey in Singapore, which has some of the world's strictest drug laws — and where vapes are coming under closer scrutiny. But first… Vapes are already banned in Singapore. But you can still walk around sometimes and see locals casually flouting the rules, puffing on their devices — also known as e-cigarettes — at restaurants or outside on their lunch hours in the central business district.
