Zelensky to meet Starmer at No10 ahead of Trump-Putin summit

Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with Sir Keir Starmer at Downing Street on Thursday morning, ahead of Donald Trump's highly-anticipated Alaska summit with Vladimir Putin.
The Prime Minister's office said the Ukrainian president was due to arrive at 9.30am.
The meeting comes after Sir Keir said Britain stands ready to 'increase pressure' on Russia if necessary.
Meanwhile, Mr Trump has threatened Russia with 'severe consequences' if a ceasefire is rejected by Putin.
During a call with the US president and European allies on Wednesday, Sir Keir praised Mr Trump for his work to bring forward a 'viable' chance of an end to the war.
But concerns have been raised over Mr Zelensky's exclusion from the summit, which is set to take place on Friday.

Why divided Ukrainians are refusing to fight for Zelensky
For the past 18 months, Pavlo has barely left his house.
His reclusiveness has nothing to do with the Russian bombs and drones pounding Kyiv. It is not the air strikes he fears, but his own Ukrainian countrymen.
It is draft officers, seeking to press-gang able-bodied men like him into units bound for the front that he dreads.
Pavlo is no conscientious objector. He regards himself as a patriot and never questions the righteousness of Ukraine's cause. Yet he – and millions like him – will not fight for their country.
Reluctance to serve – or to keep serving, in the case of the ever-swelling number of deserters – has long troubled Ukraine.
Now, just as Donald Trump grants Vladimir Putin the one-on-one summit the Russian president has coveted for years, that reluctance is tipping into crisis.

Starmer to host Zelensky at Downing Street
Mr Zelensky is set to arrive at 9.30am at Downing Street, the prime minister's office said.
It comes after Sir Keir on Wednesday maintained there was now a 'viable' chance for a Ukraine ceasefire, ahead of talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on Friday.

Could a wealth tax work in the UK? A visual guide

A rise in taxation at the autumn budget looks inevitable, as Rachel Reeves grapples with £40bn hole in the public finances. That figure comes from a recent report by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), which blames the deficit on higher-than-expected borrowing levels and a weaker growth outlook for the UK economy. The question now facing the chancellor is: who should pay more? A growing chorus of voices across the Labour party say a wealth tax is the answer. Politicians from across the divide have the habit of talking about wealth taxes in vague terms, often perpetuating misconceptions. Here's a visual breakdown of the key elements of a wealth tax system. The analysis uses figures from the most in-depth study of a potential UK wealth tax so far, produced in 2020 by the Wealth Tax Commission, a panel of leading economists assembled by tax experts Arun Advani, Emma Chamberlain and Andy Summers. Summers, director of CenTax and co-author of the 2020 study, said: 'Given the limited information HMRC currently hold on wealth, a wealth tax would be difficult to deliver any time soon. A better way to raise money from wealth would be to reform Capital Gains Tax (CGT). This is not just about raising rates. The Government should introduce an investment allowance and close gaps that currently allow some business gains to go completely untaxed. Doing this would be good for investment and growth, and raise over £13bn annually by the end of the Parliament.' The Institute of Fiscal Studies has similarly argued that an annual wealth tax would be a 'poor substitute for properly taxing the sources and uses of wealth'. Treasury officials are understood to favour the latter. Critics say a wealth tax would be too difficult and costly to implement, and that wealthy individuals would be able to move their holdings or to simply leave the country. They point to countries such as Austria, Denmark and Germany's decision to scrap similar taxes in the past. However, other countries including Spain and Switzerland have been successfully using wealth taxes to raise significant sums for generations. In their letter to the government the economists in favour of a wealth tax argue that the UK can overcome these difficulties – by leveraging digital technology and studying previous attempts to tax wealth – and pioneer a progressive tax system 'fit for the 21st century'. Tax revenue figures for income tax freeze, national insurance rise and pension contribution relief are taken from NIESR. The figures for capital gains equalisation are taken from the Centre for the Analysis of Taxation. Wealth distribution by asset class data is taken from the ONS Survey of Personal Incomes 2022-2023. UK Wealth inequality data and figures on UK total wealth ownership are from 2023 and are provided by the Wealth Inequality Lab. Wealth tax model and figures are from the Wealth Tax Commission (WTC) report and their 2020 tax simulator (the WTC study input figures are from 2018). The Guardian uprated the WTC figures by a nominal GDP increase of 39.13% between 2018 and 2025. 2018 GDP figures are from the ONS, while 2025 GDP figures are from the OBR. Figure adjustments by nominal GDP are rough estimates, conducted by the Guardian in consultation with the original researchers.

Russian politicians hail Alaska summit as victory for Moscow

Aug 16 (Reuters) - In the early hours of Saturday morning following a summit in Alaska between the leaders of Russia and the United States, senior politicians in Moscow were quick to trumpet the meeting as a win for Russia and its narrative of the war in Ukraine. "The meeting in Alaska confirmed Russia's desire for peace, long-term and fair," said Andrei Klishas, a senior lawmaker from President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party. He portrayed the summit as a coup for Russia and a loss for Ukraine and its European allies, who have been pushing for an unconditional ceasefire. "The tasks of the SMO will be accomplished either by military or diplomatic means," Klishas wrote, using the acronym for Special Military Operation, the Kremlin's term for the war. "A new architecture for European and international security is on the agenda, and everyone must accept it." The highly-anticipated summit on Friday in Anchorage yielded no agreement to resolve or pause the conflict, now in its fourth year, although both Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump described the talks as productive. The two men met for nearly three hours before giving a brief media appearance and boarding separate planes home. Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president known for his hawkish views, said the summit proved that it was possible to hold talks without conditions - as Moscow has insisted - while the fighting in Ukraine rages on. Russia's flagship Channel One morning state news bulletin on Saturday stressed the pageantry around the summit, its global profile, and the warm welcome extended to Putin, who had been ostracized by Western leaders since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. "The Red carpet, handshakes and footage and photographs that are in all global publications and TV channels," it said, saying it was the first time that Trump had met a visiting leader off their plane at the airport. Its correspondent in Alaska said the two leaders had obviously agreed about a lot of things, but did not say what those things were. "The very fact of the meeting in Alaska, its tone, and its outcome represent a significant and joint success for both presidents, each of whom made a tremendous personal contribution to achieving the best possible result at this time," Konstantin Kosachyov, a chair of the foreign affairs committee of Russia's upper house of parliament, wrote on Telegram. Other commentators struck a sourer tone. Writing for War Gonzo, a pro-war Telegram channel with over 800,000 subscribers, one blogger praised Putin's remarks as "quite strong", but added that the meeting had delivered no visible outcomes beyond the mere fact that it took place. "What will happen next? If our strikes on Ukrainian regime targets resume, Trump will have a reason to declare once again that 'Putin is talking nonsense' and to impose sanctions and interrupt the negotiation process that has begun," wrote the blogger, Old Miner. "On the other hand, should Russia stop its special military operation because of endless talks?"

Moment US B2 stealth bomber thunders over Putin as he arrives at Alaska summit - but Russian president shrugs it off

As Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin touched down in Alaska for the historic summit to discuss the future of Ukraine, the Russian leader was seemingly met with a show of strength by his US counterpart. As the two leaders strutted down the red carpet, rolled out for them on the tarmac at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, the US president surprised Putin with a military display. While walking to the podium to they were greeted by a military flyover of a US BS B2 stealth bomber, flanked by four F-35s. The five planes flew overhead in an arrow formation, close to the ground, resulting in a thunderous noise. And while Trump looked impressed by the display of military might, clapping afterwards Putin shrugged off the jets and seemed nonplussed. The pair then got into a waiting vehicle together and were seen smiling inside as they drove to a c. The jets were used in US's June strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, codenamed Operation Midnight Hammer, which saw seven planes fly 36 hours straight from a US air base to the Middle eastern country. The planes are capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear munitions and the US president previously praised the aircraft for the damage inflicted on Iran. Moments before Trump's plane touched down, the White House announced the planned one-on-one meeting between the world leaders was off the table. Putin and Trump instead held talks with two of their top aides. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Ambassador Steve Witkoff joined Trump during his formal discussions with Putin. On his way to Anchorage, Trump told reporters his goal was to 'stop the killing,' but that he didn't know how long it would take to get a ceasefire deal over the line. 'I don't know if it's going to be today,' Trump admitted on Air Force One. 'But I'm not going to be happy if it's not today. Everyone said it can't be today - but I want the killing to stop.' Days ago, Trump warned Putin 'there will be very severe consequences' if Russia does not agree to stop the war in Ukraine after their meeting. However Trump failed to secure a ceasefire agreement or peace deal in the 'extremely productive meeting' with the Russian president. The US leader told reporters: 'We didn't get there,' the usually ebullient president acknowledged, 'but we have a very good chance of getting there.' Following the three-hour meeting, Trump revealed that there were still several issues to iron out. He said: 'I'm going to start making a few phone calls and tell them what happened. But we had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to, and there are just a very few that are left.' He added, 'Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant.' Trump was set to call Zelensky and NATO leaders immediately after the meeting but details were not immediately available if that occurred.
