McGrath eyes strong finish to season against New Zealand
'I'm really excited for the opportunity to lead the side again," McGrath told reporters ahead of the first T20I in Auckland.
"I always enjoy working with Ash [Gardner] as vice-captain as well, and for us as a group, just really excited to kick off what's been a long season for us and hopefully finish on a high with a series win over here in New Zealand."
With Australia's attention largely on the upcoming ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in India later this year, the three T20Is present a unique challenge to McGrath's side. However, the skipper sees them as a valuable chance to refine their approach in the shortest format.
'It's an odd one for us. Just three T20s at this stage, with our focus being at a 50-over World Cup and also a bit of a break.
'But it's also a really good opportunity for us, with not many T20s on the international schedule before the World Cup coming up soon. Every time we get to pull on the Australian shirt, it's always a really good opportunity to go out there and keep getting better as a group.'

Australia come into the series on the back of a thumping Women's Ashes series sweep against England, where they came out on top in every single game across the three formats.
McGrath expects a stern challenge from a near full-strength New Zealand side, with T20 World Cup winning big names, Sophie Devine, Melie Kerr and Lea Tahuhu making a return to the White Ferns' squad.
'They're pretty much back at full strength, New Zealand. We're expecting a really hard-fought contest, hopefully a nice crowd being double headers, and hopefully a few Aussies in the crowd. But we're going to have to be at our best.
"They've got some world-class players - Devine, Kerr, Tahuhu - all back in the side, and superstars throughout their list. We're going to be at our best and really looking forward to the challenge. Just can't wait to get started tomorrow.'
Australia have built a reputation for playing an aggressive and fearless brand of cricket over the years, an approach that has fetched them global honours over the years, and McGrath intends to continue.
'We're always talking about how we can get better. There is no limit to our game. Really looking forward to taking the game on, playing our style, playing our brand of cricket, and like I said, finishing the season on a high is what's in front of mind for most of us.'
'Brave, fearless, aggressive. We bat so deep that we can showcase our talent, play with no fear, knowing that if it doesn't come off, there's someone ready to walk out to the wicket to do the job. And same with the ball - attacking field sets, attacking mindset, aggressive nature. And yeah, just trying to push the game forward as much as we can.'
The series opener will mark a significant milestone for Beth Mooney, who is set to play her 200th international match for Australia, and McGrath was full of praise for the wicketkeeper-batter's immense contribution to the team.
'Crazy milestone for Moons [Beth Mooney]. 200 games representing your country is a very special achievement.
'She's the ultimate consistent performer. She gets us off to a brilliant start every time with the bat. She flies under the radar a bit, and she stepped up for us this year with the gloves, and has played a really good role for us there.
'She's a great team person, always looking out for her teammates. I'm really excited to take the field with her tomorrow and celebrate such a special milestone.'

With several in-form players in the squad, Australia faces the enviable challenge of fitting a wealth of talent into the playing XI. McGrath was particularly excited for some of the newer names in the setup.
'It's a blessing and a curse when you got so much talent in the squad and you're trying to fit it into 11.
'Really excited for Volly [Georgia Voll], who, every time she's put on the Australian shirt, she's shown why she's capable at this level. Really excited for Nick [Nicole Faltum], her first Australian tour, she's slotted in straight away, like she's been part of the group forever.
"So much opportunity with people to play potentially some different roles and stand up at different points throughout the series.'

Liverpool manager Arne Slot insists it will be 'even harder than before' for his team to win the Premier League title, ahead of their season opener at home to Bournemouth on Friday. 'The main reason that is so difficult is because there are so many competitors who can win the league,' said the Dutchman, who heads into his second season in charge. 'It's unbelievable if you are able to do it in this league. 'This year will be even harder than before. Every season and preseason has its challenges. We have lost many starters. It is not always yourself but the teams you face. 'We start with Bournemouth, probably the most intense team in the league last season, in running and playing style. Afterwards it's Newcastle and Arsenal. 'We have lost five to six players who played quite a lot of minutes last season, and brought in four, so it's normal there is adaptation.' Slot has admitted there have been defensive inconsistencies during preseason that will need to be ironed out as they embark on another punishing playing schedule across four competitions. They conceded two goals in the friendly win against Athletic Bilbao and then two more against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield which saw the Eagles come out on top in a penalty shoot-out. 'The standard here is 10/10, we are doing everything well but 'well' is not good enough. We have to go a step up,' said Slot. 'So [we are] still fine tuning. Against Bilbao I was pleased with the defensive performance, no chances in open play but conceded two set pieces. 'Against Palace, the main chances we conceded was when we lost the ball ourselves. Still to improve, which is normal, let alone if we have not lost a few starters. We have brought in four new ones, so it is normal to have some adaptation – but we are definitely ready.' Liverpool smashed their transfer record to bring in German international Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee that could rise to a new British high of £116m. Despite the attacking midfielder being just 22 years old, Slot is confident a player who already has a Bundesliga title and 31 Germany caps to his name will have little trouble adapting to English football. 'Factually we can see him as a young player, but I don't see him as one,' said Slot. 'He won the Bundesliga, plays for Germany and his mentality is his biggest strength. Which says a lot because you see him play and you think: 'Are you serious?'. 'He is so creative. He is mentally strong, he doesn't get distracted by a transfer fee or anything else. 'Good players always find a way to play well in good teams. He has to adjust to England, the league and the intensity, and his teammates. The new Premier League season kicks off this Friday when defending champions Liverpool welcome Bournemouth to Anfield. Some 89 days will have passed since the last ball was kicked of the 2024/25 season, with the world's most successful domestic football league returning after a summer of frenzied transfer spending. A big chunk of the money spent can be traced back to the champions, with Anfield bosses sanctioning a huge summer outlay as Arne Slot's side look to retain the title. Manchester City will seek to bounce back after a difficult campaign, while perennial runners-up Arsenal have seemingly bought well and will look to go one better. Ahead of the new season, The National's writers make their predictions. Andy Lewis Champions: Arsenal The Gunners have made high quality acquisitions in precisely the right areas, adding to an already seasoned squad – 2025/26 can be the year they finally get over the line. Top four: Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea Relegated: Brentford, Burnley, Sunderland Surprise package: Leeds United Big club and the Premier League is better with them in it. Paul Radley Champions: Manchester City Bouncing back from a season of decline and reconstructing a title-winning side could be one of Pep Guardiola's finest achievements. Their transfer spending has been savvy, and Rodri is working his way back. Top four: Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal Relegated: Sunderland, Burnley, Wolves Surprise package: Everton After years of gently rocking between meh and battling relegation, Everton might actually be interesting this season. How they settle into their new stadium will be intriguing to see, and if they land Grealish, too, they might have spark on the field as well. Disappointment: Tottenham Hotspur Unless they suddenly sign Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi, or anyone of any sort of standing, their prospects of building on their Europa League success are diminished by their board's lack of ambition. Thomas Frank has a tough task ahead. Player of the season: Rodri Unlikely to be fully fit until the September international window, according to Guardiola. Once he is, it will be nice to be reminded of the elegance with which he plays the game when on song. Top goalscorer: Erling Haaland The league is suddenly awash with fine strikers – many of Scandinavian origin, like Alexander Isak and Gyokeres – but few are provided with the same ammunition as Haaland gets at City. Player to watch: Joao Pedro Played a key role in winning a trophy within a month of joining Chelsea, as he scored the winning goal in their Club World Cup final win over Paris Saint-Germain. Blues fans will hope he can build a substantial body of work domestically now, too. Andy Mitten Champions: Liverpool Won it with ease last season and have recruited well to strengthen. Top four: Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal. Relegated: Burnley, Sunderland, Wolves. Surprise package: Leeds United Just by avoiding relegation. Disappointment: Nottingham Forest A drop off after last season's success. Player of the season: Rodri He's still injured but can get back to his best when he starts playing again. Top goalscorer: Mohamed Salah Again. Which will be an achievement at 33-34 years old. Player to watch: Florian Wirtz Superb for Leverkusen, will be interesting to see if he can settle in a tougher league. Ian Hawkey Champions: Arsenal The new recruits in key positions can finally push the serial runners-up to one place better. Top four: Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea. Relegated: Burnley, Sunderland, Brentford. Surprise package: Bournemouth A club now built to withstand a few high-profile, high-price summer departures, they keep climbing. A European place is well within grasp. Disappointment: Manchester United Not, perhaps, quite as disappointing as last season, but the habit of underachieving seems set in, however many new strikers they sign. Player of the season: Declan Rice Fit and fresh, he can become the most galvanising midfielder in the Premier League. And he's still getting better. Top goalscorer: Erling Haaland A stronger City than last season should help reunite the Norwegian phenomenon with the Golden Boot. Player to watch: Tijjani Reijnders There will be moments City miss the departed Kevin de Bruyne, but fewer now the dynamic Reijnders is added to their midfield. He should also benefit from having Rodri, once fully fit, alongside him. Nick Donaldson Champions: Chelsea Seem to have a sense of momentum and look formidable in attack, goalkeeper possibly the weak link. Top four: Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal. Surprise package: Everton New ground, new start. Sense of optimism and momentum from last year's strong finish could lead to a season fighting in the top half of the league instead of the bottom. Disappointment: Manchester United Strengthened up front but midfield and defence still lacking. Could go either way but brittle confidence and a few bad results could send them into another season of struggle. Player of the season: Cole Palmer Exceptional talent with a stronger team around him will blossom both for Chelsea and England. Top goalscorer: Erling Haaland If the machine stays fit, there is still no one better at sniffing the goals. Player to watch: Florian Wirtz Has got the lot. Tireless, clever and inventive. Always seems to have time on the ball. Roy Cooper Champions: Arsenal Improved their points tally in the last few seasons, defensively they are very good. This could be their year. Premier League predictions: Arsenal to edge Man United, Liverpool to ease to opening win
Some 89 days after the 2024/25 Premier League season ended, the English top-flight returns with a full programme of fixtures. Below we pick out the winners and losers. Friday: Liverpool v Bournemouth (11pm kick-off UAE) The reigning champions have been splashing the cash this summer with more than €300 million spent on the likes of Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. Liverpool go into the game having lost to Crystal Palace on penalties in the Community Shield. It has been a tough transfer window for Cherries manager Andoni Iraola who has seen the defence that helped secure Bournemouth's highest ever Premier League points tally last season decimated, with Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez and Ilia Zabarnyi all heading for the exit. Prediction: Liverpool 3 Bournemouth 0 Saturday: Aston Villa v Newcastle (3.30pm) It has been a quiet window for Villa, who finished in sixth place, with the €30m Nice striker Evann Guessand their only major outlay so far. They will also be without the services of attacking duo Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio whose loan deals were not made permanent, although reports suggest a move could yet be made to bring back the latter. Newcastle have endured a summer of turmoil – despite winning the League Cup and finishing fifth – with top-scorer Alexander Isak trying to force through a move to Liverpool, while the Magpies were also beaten to the punch on a host of transfer targets. Winger Anthony Elanga has joined and will provide an injection of pace down the right. Silva is entering the final year of his contract and will need some reassuring about the club's ambition if he is to stay longer. Prediction: Brighton 2 Fulham 0 Sunderland v West Ham United (6pm) Newly-promoted Sunderland have not been shy with bolstering their squad with the Black Cats having made an eye-watering 11 new signings, with the addition of former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen arguably the standout. West Ham's transfer activity has seen them bring in experienced Premier League operators in full-back Kyle Walker-Peters and striker Callum Wilson on free transfers, while also forking out €40m on Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo. The Hammers ended last season 14th. Prediction: Sunderland 2 West Ham 3 Tottenham Hotspur v Burnley (6pm) Thomas Frank has replaced the sacked Ange Postecoglou as manager with the club's dismal 17th-place finish outweighing their Uefa Europa League final triumph. Forward Mathys Tel and winger Mohammed Kudos have joined from Bayern Munich and West Ham, respectively. Club legend Son Heung-min has left for the MLS. Burnley have also been busy in the transfer market to try to maintain their top-flight place, including the arrivals of defender Lesley Ogochukwu and forward Armando Broja from Chelsea for more than €50m. Former Man City full-back Kyle Walker and ex-Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka are also among the new arrivals. Prediction: Spurs 2 Burnley 1 Wolves v Manchester City (8.30pm) Alarm bells are ringing at Wolves (who were 16th last season) after the exits of Matheus Cunha, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Nelson Semedo, and Pablo Sarabia, while Vitor Pereira's team failed to register a single win in their preseason friendlies – losing their last three against Lens, Girona and Celta Vigo. Man City made their transfer moves before the Fifa Club World Cup, bringing in the likes of midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and attacker Rayan Cherki, while they have also re-signed goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley. Pep Guardiola's side have a point to prove after finishing third last season, 13 points behind champions Liverpool. Prediction: Wolves 1 Man City 3 Sunday: Chelsea v Crystal Palace (5pm) Chelsea enter the new campaign on a high having hammered European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Fifa Club World Cup final. The usual manic window for the Blues, who were fourth last season, with Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens among the arrivals, while the likes of Noni Madueke and Joao Felix headed for the exit The joy of Palace's Community Shield victory was quickly overshadowed as the club lost their appeal at Uefa's decision to demote them from the Europa League. The potential loss of captain Marc Guehi and key attacker Eberechi Eze before the window closes could darken the mood further. Prediction: Chelsea 2 Palace 0 Nottingham Forest v Brentford (6pm) Last season's surprise package Forest lost the services of winger Elanga to Newcastle but managed to fight off Spurs' advances for midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White. Their attacking options have been strengthened by the singings of winger Dan Ndoye and striker Igor Jesus from Bologna and Botafogo, respectively. Could be a tough season ahead for the Bees who have lost manager Frank – replaced by set-piece coach Keith Andrews – goalkeeper Mark Flekken, midfielder Christian Norgaard and attacker Bryan Mbeumo over the summer. Brentford finished 10th last season. Prediction: Forest 3 Brentford 1 Manchester United v Arsenal (6pm) United have spent big on their attacking options with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko all arriving at Old Trafford for a combined €225m. The pressure is on manager Ruben Amorim after last season's 15th-place finish and Europa League final defeat to Spurs. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is looking to end of a run of three consecutive runners-up finishes by claiming the club's first title since 2004. The Gunners appear to have strengthened two key areas by bringing in defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi and striker Viktor Gyokeres as they hunt that elusive top spot. Prediction: Man United 1 Arsenal 2 Monday: Leeds United v Everton (6pm) Second-tier title winners Leeds are aiming to buck the trend and remain in the top-flight after promotion. Manager Daniel Farke has clearly been looking to add physicality and height to his team with four of his six new signings 1.85 metres or taller – with midfielder Anton Stach standing at a mighty 1.93m. The return of manager David Moyes helped steer Everton away from relegation and up to a 13th place finish. Marquee signing Jack Grealish from Manchester City should be a perfect move for all concerned as is central midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's arrival from Chelsea.
