Dubbed "the most powerful production GTI to date", the 2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 celebrates half a century of the iconic hot hatch nameplate, and will officially debut at the Nurburgring 24-hour race on 20 June.
This week, company race driver Benny Leuchter set a 7 minute 46.13 second lap around the Nurburgring Nordschleife, making the GTI Edition 50 the fastest Volkswagen production model on the iconic 20.8km German circuit.
It beat the 2022 Golf R 20 Years by over a second, the previous VW record holder with a 7 minute 47.31 second time – again with Mr Leuchter at the wheel.

"For both of the aforementioned records, the timed lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife started flying in front of grandstand T13," Volkswagen says in its media release.
"The start and finish for the measurement were at the beginning and end of the grandstand, respectively; the approximately 200 meters in between were not counted.
"The official lap time of 07:46:13 for the Golf GTI Edition 50 includes this distance. For better comparability, a look at the on-board camera installed during the record run provides a time of 07:41:27 for the comparable lap."
While full details of the GTI Edition 50 are still to be revealed – i.e. power figures and performance claims – VW says the production model due to launch in 2026 will be available with a Performance package, which brings a "performance chassis and particularly lightweight 19-inch semi-slick Potenza Race tyres from Bridgestone… which have been specially developed for the car."
The forged alloy wheels are said to "noticeably reduce the unsprung and rotating masses", which according to Mr Leuchter were "a decisive factor" in setting the record lap time.
VW's claim that the Edition 50 is "the most powerful production GTI to date" indicates the commemorative edition will eclipse the power and performance of even the GTI Clubsport, which isn't available in Australia but on sale in overseas markets like Europe and the UK.
Equipped with a 221kW/400Nm 'evo4' iteration of Volkswagen's venerable 'EA888' 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, the 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport can dash from 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 267km/h when optioned with the Race Package.
Drive is sent exclusively to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. Sound familiar? A version of the same drivetrain powers the flagship Cupra Leon VZx in Australia.
Speaking with CarExpert at the recent local launch of the new Mk8.5 Golf range, general manager for product at Volkswagen Australia, Arjun Nidigallu, said the German brand's local arm is actively looking into how the GTI Clubsport could fit into the local lineup.
"[There's] a bit more work to do, but it's certainly something we will look into later in the lifecycle as an opportunity," Mr Nidigallu told CarExpert. "There are some technical things with the GTI Clubsport – engine and suspension variations that we need to make sure we have clearances for the Australian market."
"As we continue through the lifecycle, there are always opportunities for us to look at, special editions in particular, but typically they tend to be performance editions as well – GTI special edition or a Golf R special edition that [we have done in the past].
"Along those lines there might be an opportunity [for the Clubsport], but we need to investigate it in more detail."
The GTI Clubsport would give Volkswagen a more direct competitor to track-focused competition like the Honda Civic Type R, as well as the now-defunct Renault Megane R.S. Naturally, you can throw the aforementioned Cupra Leon in there as well.
No doubt part of the brand's initial hesitation to bring the GTI Clubsport to Australia is the presence and popularity of the all-wheel drive Golf R. Given the new GTI is priced from $58,990 and the R from $70,990 (both before on-road costs), it's a fairly narrow window for what is a niche product to sit in.
For reference, the GTI Edition 50's 7:46:13 Nordschleife record is within striking distance of the 2023 Type R's 7:44:881 and 2019 Megane R.S. Trophy R's 7:45:39 times. The record holder for compact vehicles, however, is the Golf's cousin the Audi RS3 – which holds a 7:33:123 best time.

A price for the state-owned automaker's 50 per cent share in the joint venture has not been set, and bids will be accepted until September 12. Honda has not committed to buying out Dongfeng's share, and it's unclear whether there are any other companies interested. 2025 Nissan Ariya Nismo review: Quick drive
The sight of Nissan's hallowed Nismo badge on the back of an electric SUV might irk a few traditional enthusiasts, but the Ariya Nismo spearheads a new era for the motorsport-inspired performance brand, and you better get used to it. 2025 Nissan Ariya Nismo: Quick drive Credit: CarExpert Not that the hottest Ariya is designed to actually go on track. This is very much a go-faster version of the mid-size electric SUV that finally arrives in Australia next month, and it brings exterior and interior upgrades to set it apart (a little) from the rest of the range, but don't go expecting Hyundai Ioniq 5 N levels of ability or giggles. Nissan first floated the idea of the Ariya Nismo back in January 2024 and only now has it arrived in most markets, with Australia still to come. Our first chance to drive it was on a closed test track in France. Australian pricing – and indeed availability – for the Ariya Nismo has yet to be confirmed. But if it's released Down Under it would sit atop a model lineup that ranges between $55,840 and $71,840 before on-road costs. 2025 Nissan Ariya Nismo: Quick drive Credit: CarExpert That would make it considerably pricier than the similarly positioned Volkswagen ID.5 GTX ($72,990 plus on-roads), but much cheaper than the more special Hyundai Ioniq 5 N ($110,383 plus on-roads). To see how the Nissan Ariya lines up against the competition, check out our comparison tool The architecture and layout of the Ariya's cabin are unchanged, though there are plenty of Nismo touches applied to make it feel a little more special – as incongruous as that might be in a family-sized electric SUV. 2025 Nissan Ariya Nismo: Quick drive Credit: CarExpert A red-and-black colour palette (okay, there's grey as well) denotes the sporting pretensions here and we do like the suede-like material on the sports seats and door panels. There are Nismo badges and red stitching, too, and the seats are really comfortable – if not figure-hugging. The steering wheel has a chunky leather wrap with a red 12 o'clock marker. It feels good to hold, even if we would prefer a fully round design. The anodised red start button is a nice touch, complemented by unique graphics for the digital instruments. 2025 Nissan Ariya Nismo: Quick drive Credit: CarExpert 2025 Nissan Ariya Nismo: Quick drive Credit: CarExpert It's a shame Nissan didn't replace the low-rent drive selector of the standard Ariya with a Nismo-branded alternative, and the haptic-touch controls – some love 'em, but many do not – are also unchanged. Nonetheless, there's plenty of space front and rear, with the design of the (movable) centre console making the front in particular feel spacious and open, despite the moody colour scheme. As with all versions of the Ariya using two electric motors, the boot space is reduced a little (in comparison to front-wheel-drive variants). Cargo volume of just over 400 litres is adequate, but many similarly sized electric SUVs can accommodate over 500L of luggage so it's not outstanding. 2025 Nissan Ariya Nismo: Quick drive Credit: CarExpert To see how the Nissan Ariya lines up against the competition, check out our comparison tool The Ariya Nismo uses the same 'CMF-EV' platform as a range of other Nissan, Renault Dacia and Dongfeng EVs, with modest tweaks to the suspension, steering, brakes and powertrain. 2025 Nissan Ariya Nismo: Quick drive Credit: CarExpert It also uses the same 'e-4ORCE' dual-motor setup as found elsewhere in the Ariya range, and the largest battery available in the model, with an 87kWh usable capacity. For the Nismo variant, peak power has been upped to a pretty serious 320kW, while total maximum torque is 600Nm. This enables a claimed 5.0 seconds for the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint. This allowed us to push the Ariya to its limits in safety to ascertain its ability. 2025 Nissan Ariya Nismo: Quick drive Credit: CarExpert Which might explain why we ended the drive with smoking brakes… Nissan dismissed this – and the lack of an upgrade to the Ariya's brakes – as not relevant to the 'vast majority' of buyers of such cars. However, the other chassis changes have been a little more successful, certainly in the context of driving quickly. The spring rates have been increased and the dampers upgraded, while the electric power steering has also been recalibrated. Just as interestingly, the AWD system now offers more rear bias more of the time. The result is a commendably tied-down SUV, despite its considerable weight and size. It's certainly fast, accelerating with alacrity every time you put your foot all the way down. And the body control isn't bad at all. Stability at high speed is exceptional, too. Nissan claims to have reduced lift for the Nismo model thanks to a new body kit, while also reducing drag, so perhaps there has been some motorsport engineering applied. 2025 Nissan Ariya Nismo: Quick drive Credit: CarExpert There's no adaptive damping or air suspension, though, so while the firmer components are great on a smooth road, this car won't be as comfortable elsewhere. Nissan fits special 20-inch Enkei alloy wheels to the Nismo, too, reducing unspring weight while (attempting to) aid brake cooling. They're shod in Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres, which stood up well to our abuse on the track, though they come with a rolling resistance penalty that will affect the car's efficiency. A Nismo driving mode replaces the Sport setting found in other Ariyas, ramping up the car's responsiveness, but also – unfortunately – adding a synthetic soundtrack. We'd prefer to do without the fake noises, but the car does respond keenly and can certainly raise a smile. 2026 Nissan X-Trail Nismo revealed as performance-focused hybrid SUV
The Nissan X-Trail Nismo is the spiciest version of the popular mid-size SUV yet… but it's not coming to Australia. Nissan Australia has confirmed the new range-topping X-Trail is exclusive to the Japanese market, where it'll launch in September and join an array of other Nismo-fettled models we miss out on such as the Leaf Nismo, Note Nismo, and Skyline Nismo. This is the first time the X-Trail has worn the Nismo nameplate, and it has received various mechanical enhancements to improve its dynamics with Nissan claiming it offers 'excellent cornering ability, enjoyable acceleration and a refined ride'. Its suspension features retuned springs and Kayaba Swing Valve dampers, a first for Nissan, with the brand claiming these help maintain body control while maximising ride comfort. It's said to have greater rear-wheel drive distribution and enhanced line-tracing while accelerating through corners, and characteristics of the system including front/rear drive distribution that differ with each drive mode. Nismo variants don't always offer extra power, and that appears to be the case with this fettled X-Trail with no mention made by Nissan of higher outputs from its e-Power with e-4orce powertrain. This features a 105kW/250Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine mated with 150kW/330Nm front and 100kW/195Nm rear electric motors. The X-Trail Nismo rides on Michelin Pilot Sport EV 255/45R20 tyres wrapped around 20-inch Enkei aluminium wheels. Other visible changes include unique front and rear spoilers with prominent red accents, as well as dark chrome accents. Down back, there's also a unique rear diffuser with a low-mounted rear fog lamp intended to evoke race cars. Naturally, the X-Trail Nismo can be had in Nismo's signature Stealth Grey, paired with a Super Black roof. Other exterior colours include Cardinal Red, Prism White, Dark Metal Grey, and Diamond Black. Nissan claims there's more downforce, with lift reduced by 29 per cent compared to the base X-Trail. Inside, there's a black interior with various red highlights. That includes the stitching on the doors, dashboard, centre console and steering wheel, while there's also a red start button. The seats are upholstered in fabric and leatherette and also feature red stitching. Power-adjustable, heated front sports seats from Recaro are optional. The X-Trail Nismo is available only with a five-seat configuration. It joins Autech versions of the X-Trail – named for another Nissan tuning arm – as being yet another variant of the mid-size SUV exclusive to the Japanese market. Mid-size SUVs may be the most popular new vehicles in Australia, but at least among mainstream brands there have been very few attempts to offer overtly sporty models. Exceptions to this include the old Volkswagen Tiguan R (and its tamer 195TSI R Line successor), as well as the upcoming Toyota RAV4 GR Sport. Z Nismo sports car.
