‘Uncivilised': Rajasthan woman ties rakhi to leopard, viral video sparks outrage

Indian Express6 days ago
In a bizarre incident, a woman tied a rakhi to a leopard in a village in Rajasthan. The video of the incident has caught the Internet's attention, triggering outrage over animal cruelty and a lack of awareness regarding human-animal interaction.
The now-viral video shows the woman sitting near the edge of an agricultural field. A leopard, surprisingly docile, sits in front of her. Fearless, the woman gently holds its paw, ties a rakhi, and even attempts to feed it sweets. What has left onlookers stunned is the animal's calm demeanor as it shows no aggression or fear.
According to villagers, the leopard has been frequently spotted in the area over the past few days and has shown no signs of hostility, a report in Free Press Journal stated. Locals claim it often wanders into the village and appears unusually unafraid of humans.

Slamming the incident, a user wrote, 'Probably the same people that wounded the poor animal.' Another user commented, 'Just because they see a wild animal who's not in action, he's injured, they happily take photos with him! Wow! Dude, take it to a vet to get him cured!! But no, we don't actually have love, we just want a pose with the wild animal, who otherwise is able to tear us apart!!' another user commented.
'Uncivilised people,' a third user reacted.
The report added that the forest department issued a warning after the video came to light. Officials stressed that despite the 'heartfelt' gesture, such interactions with wild animals are extremely dangerous.
Authorities have now increased surveillance in the region and are working on relocating the leopard to a safer, more suitable habitat. 'We urge people not to approach or engage with wild animals. These creatures belong in the wild, and human interference can lead to tragic consequences,' the FPJ quoted the official.

Man's Post On Migrant Workers Amid Stray Dog Debate Viral: Why Internet Rounded Up 'Elites'

Several actors including Jahnvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan who have spoken in favour of stray dogs have been trolled online for their "privileged" opinions. If you have just logged in to the Internet, welcome. A lot has unfolded in the past 24 hours. The Supreme Court ordered the removal of stray dogs from the streets of the capital city while hearing a suo motu case against the canines attacking children. This has led to a national debate that doesn't seem to cease any time soon. One camp believes that SC's order to round up stray dogs is a short-sighted and inhumane decision, one that is impractical. Where will the stray dogs go? Questioned a large number of netizens who strongly believe that lack of shelter and space would eventually deplete their population in this 'cruel" and enforced crackdown on the canines. The other side argued that the stray dogs were a menace to society and the rising case of dog bites, some even leading to horrific deaths, put especially the vulnerable, kids and the elderly, at most risk. The human lives trumped the animal lives, they said. But what about the migrant workers, delivery drivers, or BPO employees who return home late regularly? A man's post on X, extending his empathy towards workers toiling on the streets at night, has resonated with many. 'You Don't Realise The Consequences" X user, who goes by the handle @Prithvi10_, wrote: 'People who work till late into the night are majorly migrants who work at restaurants / bars who finish their job and return home from narrow lanes, food delivery boys, there are even BPO employees who walk home a lil from their dropping point (sic)." He added that these people aren't well-to-do and have to fight off the strays daily. The delivery persons put their lives at risk by speeding on their bikes to fend off the chasing strays. 'Why should they go through this. These are just hardly 2-3 examples," the user wrote before stating that there are videos of children being attacked by the animals on the loose and many of those incidents lead to deaths. He added that the workers who were at constant mercy of stray dogs did not enjoy the privilege of having secure jobs, and one unfortunate attack on them would mean someone else would replace their job, leaving them with no salary to run home. Concluding his now-viral post, the user remarked that the privileged were guarded by their cars when they stepped out to smoke late at night, and they were in no position to realise the consequences of defending the presence of strays on the streets and in society. A Reddit user, agreeing with the viral post, remarked that they had spent 20 years around pet dogs and they still took the necessary precautions, including muzzles and leashes, to safeguard others as dogs naturally possessed 'animalistic instincts". So an unsupervised stray was prone to attacking unprovoked. 'I'm a dog lover and and a I own 3 dogs. I can without any doubt say that strays are not just a problem for the society but for their own self too. They are fried up in summers, they freeze in winters, they reproduce within themselves(incest) and are born with disabilities too. Apart from feeding them no one cares for them (sic)." 'For the strays no one cares, they are a ticking time bomb always. The SC order is justified and in the benefit of all. The only concern is that the authorities actually should care for the strays once they are moved to a shelter (sic)." The Reddit commenter also urged people to refrain from calling it 'animal cruelty". They added that it did concern them what the future of these strays would be at the shelter and if they would be looked after well. 'Elites Know Nothing" Dismissing their Instagram protest as performative, many on X panned Bollywood celebrities for sharing a forwarded template in support of the stray dogs. The prevailing argument was that Bollywood celebrities, shielded and insulated, lacked a true understanding of ground-level realities. 'They call it a menace. We call it a heartbeat." Gated society elites preach "love street dogs" because they've never had a pack chase them at midnight. Dump 20 outside their villas and watch that love PR started — Wellu (@Wellutwt) August 12, 2025 'Gated society elites preach 'love street dogs" because they've never had a pack chase them at midnight. Dump 20 outside their villas and watch that love evaporate.." a user remarked. Animal Rights Activities, Dog Lovers Animal welfare advocates have emphasised that extensive sterilisation programs, regular vaccination campaigns, and community feeding centres offer more compassionate and sustainable solutions for managing stray populations. 'The real fix? Large-scale sterilisation programs, regular vaccination drives, community feeding zones, and adoption campaigns. Not punishment. Not imprisonment." John Abraham, Sanya Malhotra, and Bhumi Pednekar were among the many celebrities who have reacted strongly to the SC order. 'Bedroom Jihadis' the new nuisance for security in J&K

Jammu: Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir are grappling with a new and insidious threat in the form of "bedroom jihadis" -- people who manipulate social media from the safety of their homes to spread misinformation and incite communal discord, officials said. This kind of enemy, far removed from the traditional armed terrorists, is at the heart of a sophisticated cross-border effort to destabilise the region, the officials said. An in-depth investigation has uncovered a network of social media handles, believed to be controlled by terror groups and their sympathisers in Pakistan, that have been actively intruding into local digital spaces, disseminating inflammatory content and propaganda with the clear objective of creating sectarian clashes and unrest in the Kashmir valley. "After years of fighting armed terrorists, security agencies have been facing this hidden enemy in which these new-age jihadis use computers and smartphones to wage war from just about anywhere, spreading rumours and influencing youths," an official in the know of the developments said. The trend emerged in 2017 but ended after an effective crackdown with curbs on the Internet post abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. After the successful completion of assembly elections last year, the "bedroom jihadis" have surfaced again, possibly with an aim to destablise the elected government and create a sense of unrest, the officials said. Security agencies have also uncovered a sophisticated and concerted effort by terror groups and their sympathisers operating from across the border to use social media platforms to incite sectarian clashes and destabilise the region. The investigation, which has been underway for several weeks, involved scrutinising thousands of social media posts, comments and private messages and its analysis provided compelling evidence of a direct link between these malicious online activities and handlers located in Pakistan. During Muharram days observed by the Shia community recently, there was tension between the two sects of the Muslim community over a post but effective handling by Srinagar police doused the fire before it could spread, the officials said. Former Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Kuldeep Khoda says the successful identification and disruption of this cross-border social media plot highlight the evolving nature of threats to security in Jammu and Kashmir. "While traditional terror activities remain a concern, the digital battlefield is increasingly becoming a front where external forces seek to destabilise the region by exploiting local tensions, which should be nipped in the bud," he feels.

Woman Smokes On Istanbul-Cyprus Flight, Threatens To ‘Blow' It Up

The woman blatantly violated in-flight safety regulations, which strictly prohibit passengers from smoking inside the plane. A shocking incident on a flight has been going viral on the Internet, where a female passenger was seen smoking inside the cabin. The incident took place on a flight from Istanbul to Cyprus. The woman, dressed in a blue burqa and sunglasses, was seen sitting by the window when she began smoking a cigarette inside the plane. She blatantly violated in-flight safety regulations, which strictly prohibit passengers from smoking inside the plane. As seen in the clip, the woman, who was sitting alone in her row, takes a puff and pulls down her burqa to exhale the smoke discreetly into the cabin air. However, the smell gave her away. A man, sitting on the seat in front of her, quickly looked back at her to check if she was really smoking. He then removed the seat cover to prevent any mishap. The cabin crew, too, acted swiftly and snatched the cigarette from her hand. Things took a turn for the worse as the woman then took out a lighter and tried to set the cover of the seat on fire. She did not stop there. The woman then took out a piece of white cloth and tried to light that as well. But the crew acted immediately and tried to take away her lighter, which she resisted. Another crew member reached her seat with a bottle of water, pouring it over the flame to extinguish it. The video shared by The Sun on Monday, August 11, on X has garnered over 2.5 million views. People have expressed concerns over violations of such safety regulations, while a section slammed her for her actions. Meanwhile, a few other users pointed out that the incident happened years ago and isn't a recent one. Woman attempts to smoke on plane and burn seat cover — The Sun (@TheSun) August 11, 2025 When Did The Shocking Smoking Incident On The Flight Take Place? Reportedly, the bizarre incident took place in 2019. According to several media reports, the original video was posted on X, where the woman on the plane going from Istanbul to Northern Cyprus threatened to 'blow up" the aircraft as it was taxiing at the Istanbul airport. She shouted, 'I am an FETO member, and I will blow up the aircraft." The woman was later detained by the authorities. She was allegedly from the Gülen organisation, which has been classified by Turkiye as a terrorist organisation under the names Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) and Parallel State Structure (PDY). FETO was behind a failed coup in the country in 2016. view comments First Published: August 12, 2025, 16:09 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
