Ardgowan whisky distillery launches tours of new site
The Inverkip-based independent company, which opened and filled its first cask in June 2025, is now taking bookings for tours starting on Tuesday, August 12. Running twice per day at 10.30am and 2pm from Tuesday to Saturday, tours will last 90 minutes and include a guided journey through the distillery and a warehouse, plus a tutored tasting for three malt whiskies from the distillery's portfolio. Heading up the distillery's shop and tours is visitor centre manager Barbara Campbell, whose passion and rich heritage comes from being the fifth generation in her family to work in whisky. Remarking on the step for Ardgowan, Campbell said: 'When I decided to talk to Ardgowan about joining the team, my intention was to inspire a new generation of whisky drinkers, enthusiasts like me and witness whisky production move in an innovative new way. 'It was quite simply a case of 'what's not to love' when you see what Ardgowan have committed to with the wonderful, sustainable new distillery, alongside their commitment to being world-class and introducing the first new cask size for many years - 'the Infinity Cask' - intended for a luxurious maturation to look forward to in the future. Martin Lewis issues credit card warning to Brits abroad
You could be hit with some unexpected extra fees. Martin Lewis has issued an urgent alert to Brits about the use of credit cards while on holiday. The finance expert has drawn attention to the potential hazards of withdrawing cash with this type of card. Figuring out the most cost-effective way to spend money while on holiday can be a challenge. Some countries still largely rely on cash, whereas others are more open to card and mobile payments. And in certain destinations, such as Morocco, it's not possible to get local currency before leaving the UK. Regardless of where you're headed, Martin strongly discourages using your credit card for cash withdrawals. On his website Money Saving Expert, he expanded on his guidance. Martin said: "Withdrawing cash on a credit card abroad?". As reported by GlasgowLive, he highlighted that this habit could have a detrimental effect on your credit score. "It could impact your credit rating," he further explained. "We get this question a lot, as we warn against credit card ATM withdrawals in the UK, as it risks high interest and many lenders see it as a debt-problem indicator." However, infrequent use of this method is generally not an issue. He stated: "Yet if you only do it occasionally abroad on a specialist card, it's not a biggie, just don't overdo it and pay it off in full" He also mentioned that in some countries, using a UK card can be a "bit trickier". This includes: In Japan, you may need special ATMs to use international cards In China, hotels take cards, but elsewhere Alipay is easier In India, some shops and restaurants won't take international cards As well as using credit cards for cash withdrawals he also advised against using them to top up prepayment cards. He clarified: "You'll likely pay fees and interest. "Most credit-card providers count these as a cash transaction - so charge withdrawal fees and interest. New £25m landmark Scottish whisky distillery opens
Ardgowan Distillery in Inverkip has been formally opened today by Kate Forbes, Scotland's Deputy First Minister, as its first casks are filled since building concluded earlier this month. Founded in 2017, the firm is led by Roland Grain, whisky entrepreneur, and Laura Davies, distillery manager, who together spearhead an expert team with a combined experience spanning over seven decades in the whisky industry. (Image: Getty Images) Featuring a sweeping Scandinavian longhouse design and 97 per cent recycled aluminium roof, the distillery has its sights set on producing top quality whisky and striving for carbon neutrality. Ms Forbes said: 'This is a significant moment for the region's economy, with investment and job opportunities set to boost local communities. 'Scotland's whisky industry is a pivotal contributor to our positive global standing and provides great economic benefit, adding over £7 billion to the UK economy and generating £5.4bn in exports alone. 'I congratulate the team at Ardgowan for the dedication they have shown on this journey and I wish them every success as they enter the next phase of their operations.' Following eight years of development, planning and construction, it is the first new distillery to open in Inverclyde for over a century. The firm said that, until now, the last distillery to operate in the region was destroyed in the Greenock Blitz. The first casks are filled. Ardgowan's ultimate goal is to revive the golden age of Scotch whisky with long Sherry cask maturation in European oak. 'Our commitment to quality is demonstrated by investing millions of pounds in our bespoke Infinity Casks years before the distillery was built. Producing whisky is all about time and patience, so, as we fill our first casks and the Deputy First Minister opens the site to the public, we look forward to steadily perfecting our Single Malt in the years to come.'
