Air Force to phase out MiG-21 fighter jets by September 2025, will be replaced by Tejas Mk1A: Defence officials
First inducted in 1963, these jets will be retired after 62 years of service with the indigenously developed Tejas aircraft replacing them in all the current squadrons. The squadrons operating the MiG 21 plane are currently in Rajasthan's Nal Air Force base.
'Indian Air Force to phase out the MiG-21 fighter jet by September this year. The squadrons operating the aircraft are currently in Nal air base in Rajasthan. The LCA Mark 1A aircraft would be replacing the MiG-21s in the IAF,' a defence official said.
The MiG 21 is India's first ever supersonic jet, acquired as part of a deal with the erstwhile Soviet Union in 1963. The aircraft has had limited use in the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war, but was subsequently used multiple military conflicts since, including the 1999 Kargil War, 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
Notably, the aircraft was also used during the 2019 Balakot airstrike against terrorist camps in Pakistan. During the operation, one MiG 21 was downed, leading to the capture of Wing Commander Abhinadnan.
The present Air Force Chief of Air Staff, AP Singh, also flew the MiG 21 aircraft recently.
The fighter jet has also been the mainstay of Air Force operations. However, the aircraft has been unofficially dubbed as the 'flying coffin' due to the various accidents with it.
In October 2023, Number 4 Squadron, known as 'Oorials' of the IAF based at Air Force Station Uttarlai (Barmer), Rajasthan, decommissioned their MiG 21 and Su-30 MKI, marking a watershed moment in the history of the squadron, which had been operating the MiG-21 since 1966.
Earlier on July 17 2025, The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) were handed over the first set of wing assemblies for Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A, produced by Larsen & Toubro, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Defence.
Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar attended the event virtually as General Manager (LCA Tejas Division) M Abdul Salam received the assemblies on behalf of HAL from Precision Manufacturing & Systems Complex unit of L&T.
In his address, the Secretary (Defence Production) commended the efforts of HAL and L&T towards achieving self-reliance. He hailed HAL for spearheading collaboration with different private sector partners, nurturing them and ensuring enhanced capability. He expressed confidence in meeting the requirement of the production target for LCA Tejas. He called for expanding horizons and focusing on reducing dependency on other countries. (ANI)

Traders in PoGB block China trade route for 23 days, demand end to ''illegal'' federal taxes
Gilgit [PoGB], August 2 (ANI): Traders in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB) on Friday continued their protest for the 23rd consecutive day, blocking the Karakoram Highway--a key trade route with China--demanding an end to federal taxes they deem illegal, Dawn reported. The prolonged blockade has disrupted all Pakistan-China trade and travel through the vital border crossing, leaving thousands of people, including Chinese nationals and foreign tourists, stranded in the area. The protest has garnered support from local political, youth, and religious parties, who argue that the region's disputed constitutional status exempts it from federal taxation. 'The federal government is reluctant to solve the genuine demands of local people,' said Mohammad Ishaq, one of the protest organisers. 'They are just demanding how federal taxes can be collected from the people who are not constitutional citizens of Pakistan and the region is a disputed status area,' he added. Ishaq reaffirmed the traders' commitment to their 'principle stance of 'No taxation without representation.'' The tax dispute has reportedly paralysed the local economy for the past eight months, leaving thousands jobless--including transporters, hotel owners, shopkeepers, and customs agents. Ayub Waziri, a member of the PoGB Assembly, said the issue affects the broader population of the region, not just the trading community. 'This is an issue of the GB people,' Waziri stated, highlighting that since the region is not constitutionally part of Pakistan, all federal taxes imposed there are illegal. Waziri further said that during last year's negotiations, officials from Pakistan's Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) admitted that PoGB falls in a 'non-tariff zone.' He noted that the federal government has since formed a committee to address the matter and that the PoGB government is mediating. The protest intensified on Friday as hundreds of people from multiple areas joined the blockade to show their solidarity. 'The protest movement has awakened GB people for their rights,' said Moulana Sharfuddin, a leader of Tanzeem Ahl-i-Sunnat wal Jamat, PoGB, expressing his support. Protesters claim the deadlock has made them victims of federal economic policies. Ahmed Nabi, a protester, told Dawn that billions of rupees worth of goods imported through the Sost Dry Port have been stuck for over a month. 'Many items have expired, while others stored in the open have been damaged by rain because Pakistan Customs officials are not clearing local consignments,' he said. Javed Hussain, another organiser, alleged, 'Speedy clearance of goods is allowed to only a handful of people.' He added, 'The economic exploitation of local people will never be accepted.' (ANI)

"Temporary negotiation tactic": Expert on Trump's 25 per cent tariff on India
Washington DC [US], July 31 (ANI): The 25 per cent tariff and additional penalties imposed by US President Donald Trump on India should be viewed as a temporary negotiating tool rather than a permanent shift in trade relations, according to Gaurav Sansanwal, Fellow for the Chair on India and Emerging Asia Economics at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Speaking to ANI on Wednesday (local time), Sansanwal said the tariff impacts several key sectors of the Indian economy, including electronics, pharmaceuticals, refined petroleum products, and gems and jewellery--areas where India maintains a substantial trade surplus with the United States. 'This impacts a broad spectrum of sectors, starting from electronics to pharma to refined petroleum products to gems and jewellery, and those are important for India because India has a huge trade surplus with the US, so this is an irritant, but it is not permanent. This is a temporary negotiation tactic being used in a bilateral relationship, as far as we can assess. Therefore, this is not the final word on it, ' he stated. He added that New Delhi is likely monitoring the situation closely and working toward a resolution that serves its economic interests. 'New Delhi would be watching this closely; they would also be working to try to negotiate a deal that makes this better from the Indian perspective as well,' he added. Sansanwal's remarks come as President Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff, plus a penalty on India, effective August 1, citing trade imbalances and India's continued energy ties with Russia. Commenting on Trump's criticism of India's relationship with Russia, Sansanwal said Washington's use of the Russia card in trade talks is a strategic move aimed at gaining leverage, not a reflection of a fundamental misunderstanding. 'India always had a different relationship with Russia, which has always been acknowledged. The US acknowledges the fact that India's relationship with Russia is different. But given that it wants to exercise more leverage over India in trade talks, it is using that as one of the items through which it can justify or add more colour to what it is trying to do,' he explained. Sansanwal also noted that the Biden administration had similarly recognised the unique nature of India-Russia ties, suggesting that this awareness continues despite Trump's more aggressive rhetoric. 'India has been clear from the beginning, and the US, right from the Biden administration, has acknowledged that India's relationship with Russia is different,' he added. (ANI)
