3 with cannabis nabbed on NSE
KULAI: Traffic on the North-South Expressway came to a standstill on Aug 13 when police swooped on a car, arrested two men and a woman, and uncovered over 2kg of cannabis worth more than RM5,000. Police intercepted a Nissan Sunny, ferrying the trio aged between 40 and 46 at Km42.5 northbound of the highway at 4.20pm. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee said acting on intelligence gathered, its narcotic detectives with help from the Southern Highway Traffic Enforcement unit, surrounded the vehicle on the highway during a raid. "Police found four transparent packets and two compressed packages of dried plant material believed to be cannabis, weighing 2,097g with an estimated street value of RM5,242. "One of the men has two prior drug-related records. Initial urine tests found both men positive for methamphetamine while the woman tested negative," he said in a statement today. All three suspects were remanded for seven days until tomorrow.

Cook charged with murdering housemate in Senawang stabbing case
SEREMBAN: A cook was charged in the Magistrate's Court today with the murder of his housemate in Senawang. Zulazren Zakariah, 31, did not enter a plea as the case falls under the High Court's jurisdiction. He is accused of stabbing Muhammad Amirul Rashid Mohd Niza, 28, in the chest at a house in Taman Sri Pagi on August 11. The charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries the death penalty or 30 to 40 years' jail with caning. No bail was granted, and the case will be mentioned on October 17. Deputy public prosecutor Nik Nur 'Aqilah Syarfa Nik Zaidi handled the prosecution, while Zulazren had no legal representation. Man gets two years' jail for assaulting wife
SEREMBAN: A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in jail for assaulting his wife. The father of five did not contest the charge after it was read to him before Magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli on Tuesday (Aug 19). He was charged with committing the offence at around 1pm on June 6 at their home in Lenggeng near here. The charge was brought under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, read together with Section 326A. The offence carries a jail term of up to one year, or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction. Section 326A provides for a prison term twice as long as the maximum term under Section 323. K. Kogilawani from the Legal Aid Department, who represented the accused, pleaded for a light sentence as he was an odd-job worker and had to provide for his children, one of whom has special needs. According to the facts of the case, the victim suffered swelling on her body after she was assaulted. Deputy public prosecutor Nik Nur 'Aqilah Syarfa Nik Zaidi asked the court to impose punishment commensurate with the offence.
