Browns GM calls out Shedeur Sanders over speeding tickets: 'Not smart'

Shedeur Sanders' tumultuous offseason took a couple more wrong turns when he was twice cited for speeding. Sanders was first ticketed for going 91 mph in a 65-mph zone. Two weeks later, he went 101 in a 60 and failed to appear in court for both citations. The quarterback said he haas learned from his mistakes, and it seems that his general manager, Andrew Berry, assisted in teaching him a thing or two. "Not smart. Just not smart," Berry told reporters this week about the tickets. "It's something that we've addressed with him. Look, he understands the implications, he understands the consequences. It's not just about yourself. It's not just about having a joyride, but that you could injure other people. . . . A deer or something cuts in front of you, your reaction time, it's just dangerous." The rookie quarterback addressed those traffic tickets while appearing at teammate David Njoku's charity softball game last month. "I made some wrong choices personally, and I can own up to them," Sanders said. "I made some, you know, not great choices … I learned." Sanders is now currently vying for a starting spot on the Cleveland Browns, who selected him in the fifth round after an unprecedented slide in the NFL Draft. The Colorado alum was once in consideration to be a top-five pick, but he was not selected until the third and final day of the draft. One of the quarterbacks selected over him, Dillon Gabriel in the third round, was his own teammate. His odds of getting the starting job don't seem too high right now, though, as he's taking most of his reps with third-stringers. Out of himself, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and Gabriel, he is the only one who has not taken a snap with the first team.

Shedeur Sanders stays patient with Browns' third-stringers in training camp: 'Doesn't really faze me'

In May, Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said fans should not "look into" Shedeur Sanders not getting the first snaps at rookie minicam. Well, training camp has begun, and the Colorado alum's snaps are coming with the backups. Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel have all taken snaps with the starters thus far, while Sanders, who surprisingly fell to the fifth round of the NFL Draft, anxiously waits his turn. Sanders is getting most of his work with the third-stringers. "I don't think that's my place to answer, to give the answer to that," Sanders said at camp Friday, via ESPN. "I feel like that it's not in my control. So, I'm not going to think about that or even have that in my thought process of why it is. There's a lot of people who want to have the opportunity to be at this level, and I'm here. And I'm thankful to have the opportunity. So, whenever that is, that is. "It doesn't make me feel down or left out because I know who I am as a person," he added. "I know who I am as an individual, and I know what I could bring to this team. So, I can never feel less than any circumstance." Sanders was once considered a top five selection, but he had an unprecedented fall in the draft. The Browns took Gabriel in the third round. But Sanders is keeping a positive attitude. "It doesn't really faze me," said Sanders. "We came all the way from an HBCU to a Power 5, and now we're here. So, at this point, if you look, there's nothing that's a challenge, I would say." The Browns' first preseason game is Aug. 8 against the Carolina Panthers. The Browns' four quarterbacks are all putting work in while Deshaun Watson rehabs from a twice-torn Achilles.

Matthew Stafford will remain out of practice next week and his return is week to week

Rams coach Sean McVay said earlier this week that quarterback Matthew Stafford would miss the start of training camp, returning for the second block. Stafford, though, will not get back into team drills next week. McVay gave a medical update on Stafford's sore back Saturday, emphasizing that the two-time Pro Bowler has not had a setback in his rehab. Stafford, though, will continue to work on the side into next week. 'The ultimate goal is Houston [for the season opener], and being mindful of that, so we'll take it a week at a time with him,' McVay said, via video from the team. 'Based on sitting down with [the team's sports medicine and performance senior vice president] Reggie [Scott] and with Matthew and talking with Dr. [Robert] Watkins, we feel like that's the smart thing to do. A week at a time with him. 'But I don't have any more concerns. The goal in mind is Houston, and I do think this is the best plan for him.' Stafford, 37, is entering his fifth season with the Rams. He got through 2024 healthy, with the Rams sitting him in their Week 18 game having already clinched the NFC West. Stafford completed 65.8 percent of his throws last season for 3,762 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Rams have a plan to get him through a full season again, and this is part of that plan. The team will be deliberate in Stafford's training camp participation. McVay said he should have characterized Stafford as 'week to week' when he reported the injury earlier this week. 'It does not worry me,' McVay said of the delay to get Stafford into team drills. 'What I probably should have done is say we're taking it a week at a time, but I don't have any reason to be concerned based on the information that's been given. With that being said, I don't think we can be smart enough with somebody like Matthew. I think it's best for him and best for our football team. That's kind of the plan we'll have moving forward. I know that will surprise people, but I did want to at least let you guys know as we're begin fluid with this. But we don't have any reason for concern, but I do think it's the smart thing just based on [getting him ready for the season opener] Sept. 7 . . . with that being the main goal in mind.'
