Uncle Quek Elevates Singapore's Hawker Classics for Hong Kong Diners
The bad news first: Uncle Quek's bak kut teh, the pork rib soup that's beloved in the region, is closer to the Malaysian style. That is, the soup is more herbal rather the peppery — a choice the chef told us was made for Hong Kongers' sensitive palates. Fortunately, everything else is fantastic, with a lineup that nails the original flavors of traditional dishes while elevating them beyond street food with richer and higher-quality ingredients.

This Tiny Island Is the 'Las Vegas of Asia'—and It's Also a Foodie Paradise
If you've heard of Macau at all, it's probably because of gambling; the casinos in this special administrative region of China, about an hour's ferry ride from Hong Kong, pull in 25 percent more annual revenue than Las Vegas. But food-focused travelers should also have Macau on their radar. For nearly 500 years, the territory was a colony of Portugal. That legacy led to a mixed-race population known as the Macanese, who created a fusion cuisine of the same name. One of the most prominent people cooking Macanese cuisine today is Antonieta Fernandes Manhão—a Macau native, Iron Chef Thailand contestant, and author. In March, I visited Macau with Chef Neta, as she's known, who showed me a side of the territory that didn't involve a single casino. From left: Belos Tempos restaurant; salt-cod fritters at La Famiglia restaurant. Her interest in cooking was inspired by her grandmother, a native speaker of Patuá—a mix of Portuguese, Cantonese, and other languages found along the Portuguese trade routes—who was tasked with feeding a family of 14. I met Neta at Universidade de Turismo de Macau (UTM), where she offers a cooking course. 'I saw that Macanese food was disappearing,' she told me, describing her motivation to start teaching. In addition to a hotel, Pousada de Mong-Há , the compound is home to two dining outlets. The one we ate in, the casual UTM Café , features Macanese specialties such as minchi, minced pork and beef fried with soy sauce and topped with a fried egg. (This year, Neta published a cookbook, Receita di Casa —with text in Chinese, English, and Portuguese—that contains her recipe for minchi and 18 other dishes.) One day, Neta and I crossed Macau's Outer Harbor to Taipa, where La Famiglia serves both Portuguese and Macanese dishes. 'I'm trying to re-create the taste that I have in my memories,' said the restaurant's owner, Florita Alves, who is of mixed Chinese-Portuguese ancestry. It was a great place to try the various savory snacks that form a cha gordo (fat tea), a traditional Macanese feast that includes rissoles (a type of savory pastry), samosas, salt-cod balls, croquettes, and hand pies. Originally opened as a gathering place for senior citizens, APOMAC is one of Macanese cooking's more traditional outposts. 'This is homestyle food,' said Neta of the dishes in front of us, such as capella, a meatloaf studded with olives and topped with melted cheese, and xarope de figo, a jelly made with fig leaves. Ana Manhão, Neta's cousin, is the ebullient chef behind Belos Tempos . Manhão, who had a background in Portuguese folk dancing, told me that before opening the restaurant she reached out to Macanese relatives for recipes and feedback. 'They knew the tastes. I didn't. They'd say, 'Add more vinegar, more turmeric.' ' Order in advance for specialties such as porco balichão-tamarindo, pork ribs and belly in a sweet-tart funky sauce, or batatada, a dense, moist cake made from potatoes. From left: A quiet corner at UTM Café; digging in at APOMAC. 'I love that you can find these things here,' Neta said as she led me to our last stop: the lobby of a hospital in Macau. Hidden in plain sight at Centro Hospitalar Conde de São Januário is a café that serves Portuguese and Macanese sweets and snacks such as serradura, layers of pulverized Maria cookies and whipped cream, and pãezinhos recheados, tennis-ball-size rolls stuffed with turmeric-spiced meat. 'We should do a tour, the route of Macanese food. It would stop in Malaysia, Thailand, Japan,' Neta said. Perhaps she was just thinking out loud, but her words left me wondering where I could sign up. A version of this story first appeared in the September 2025 issue of Travel + Leisure under the headline "Mixing It Up ."

The Star Of ‘Crazy Rich Asians' Shares His Best Travel Tips And His Latest Project—A Travel Rewards Credit Card
Henry Golding attending the premiere of Crazy Rich Asians. He has partnered with Citi to help launch the Citi Strata Elite Card, a premium travel rewards credit card. (Photo by Ian West/PA Images via Getty Images) PA Images via Getty Images If you've been on an airplane recently, chances are you've seen Crazy Rich Asians on the small screen. The runaway box-office hit debuted in 2018 and has staying power: It's still one of the most-watched in-flight films. On American Airlines alone, the movie racks up more than 15,000 views a week. In the film, Golding plays Nick Young, a man whose life is all about private planes and glamorous destinations. But what many audiences don't know is that before the breakout role, the Malaysia-born British actor was a globetrotting travel host for the BBC, tracking lions on the plains of Kenya, riding the rails through Cambodia and eating his way around Istanbul. That early career taught Golding to see travel not just as an escape, but as a way to connect with people and cultures. And it's part of the reason why Citi hired Golding to help launch the new Citi Strata Elite Credit Card, a premium card designed for travelers who are looking for generous rewards and lifestyle perks. At a star-studded event in New York City, Golding sat down with me to talk about travel and how the Citi Strata Elite card aligns with the way he explores the world these days. 'Travel represents freedom,' Golding told me in an interview. 'It evolves as you get older. When we're younger, it's about checking off all the bucket list boxes. Now, it's about building memories with my kids.' Henry Golding in Bali with one of his children, reflecting his passion for global travel and cultural exploration. Courtesy of Henry Golding Golding has two young children with his wife, Liv Lo. He says his travel goals have shifted since becoming a father: Now he wants to help his kids see the world. 'I want to bring them to Asia—to Malaysia and Taiwan. I also want to take them to more out-there places for kids—to Greenland, to see the Northern Lights and more Northern Europe.' He also has a soft spot for Mallorca, where he recently vacationed with his family. 'The beaches are amazing, the mountains, the countryside, the people, the food—we'll be back.' Citi Strata Elite Card: Premium Travel Rewards That love of travel is a big part of what drew Golding to Citi's new offering. The Citi Strata Elite card is designed for premium travelers who want high-value rewards. Benefits include 1.5x points on every dollar spent, 6x on flights and restaurants on Friday and Saturday nights (plus 3x on dining all other times) and 12x on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked on Citi Travel (the highest earn rate of its kind in the industry). Besides the points, there are other perks like an annual $300 hotel credit, four American Airlines Admirals Club passes, complimentary Priority Pass Select membership at more than 1,500 airport lounges worldwide and a $200 splurge credit that can be used at a variety of merchants including Live Nation, Best Buy, 1stDibs, Future fitness training and more. 'The Citi Strata Elite card hits all the things that I love to spend my money on, which is travel and dining experiences,' says Golding. 'Usually I just pay out of pocket. So to be rewarded for having those amazing experiences, that's a natural.' Henry Golding at the New York City launch of the Citi Strata Elite, a premium travel rewards credit card offering generous perks for frequent travelers. Courtesy of Citi Pam Habner, head of U.S. Branded Cards and Lending at Citi, says that choosing Golding to help launch the Citi Strata Elite Card was a no-brainer. 'He is a true world traveler, both personally and professionally who values making the most out of his journey,' Habner told me in an interview. 'Long before his acting career took off, Henry was hosting BBC's The Travel Show and sharing his passion for adventure with audiences around the world. That spirit of discovery and authenticity makes him a natural fit to launch the Citi Strata Elite card.' And of course, it doesn't hurt that Crazy Rich Asians has such a huge following. Habner points out that it's 'steeped in luxury, travel and culture—it's a film that invites audiences to enjoy a luxurious journey while on their way to their own adventure, which is why I think it's had such strong staying power with travelers.' Henry Golding's Best Travel Tips While the new partnership may be the headline, Golding's travel advice is refreshingly down-to-earth. He's a big believer in following personal passions when exploring a destination. For instance, he'll go to local jujitsu gym in whatever country or city he's in and train. 'Then you meet people there and you become fast friends,' says Golding. Henry Golding vacationing in Mallorca with his wife, Liv Lo—one of the destinations he calls a personal favorite. Courtesy of Henry Golding He also uses social media to his advantage. 'I'm a big Instagrammer. I just love sleuthing on the internet,' he says. 'Sometimes I'll hit up a creator or somebody prolific in some sort of area of expertise in that particular place. Like, 'Oh, hey, I'm coming into town. If you're up for coffee, I would love to pick your brains.'' For the average travel who might not have that kind of clout, Golding encourages stepping outside your comfort zone. 'Once you start saying 'yes' to certain things that maybe aren't in your wheelhouse, you never know where it's going to take you,' he says. 'Some of the most magnificent nights are the unexpected ones.' The Citi Strata Elite, a premium travel rewards credit card offering high earn rates on travel and dining, plus flexible lifestyle perks. Courtesy of Citi For Citi, the launch of the Citi Strata Elite isn't just about a new product—it's a response to how people are traveling now. The card was built 'in direct response to customer demand for premium travel and dining rewards that are delivered with simplicity, flexibility and convenience,' says Habner. For Golding, helping launch a new travel rewards credit card is about amplifying the way he already approaches travel: with the belief that every journey has the potential to create lasting memories. 'The more opportunity that you open yourself to, the more that's going to come across your path,' he says. 15 best places to dine along Orchard Road & people watch [Aug 2025 update]
Despite the sheer number of eateries along Orchard Road, I often hear many complain that there is 'nothing to eat' in the city. This listicle focuses on restaurants along the stretch connecting Orchard and Somerset MRT stations. These are the best spots to people watch while digging into your meal. Without further ado, here are the top 15 Orchard Road food spots that deliver both quality meals and scenic views. 1. Merci Marcel Merci Marcel is one of my top date spots, for sure. With a tropical-inspired interior, the stylish restaurant sets a comfortable but luxurious mood for dining. The eatery uses inviting colours of yellow and baby blue to draw the attention of passers-by. Not to mention the presence of a large circular window that allows diners to peer outside and people-watch! I always insist on getting their Homemade Fries (S$14) served with truffle mayonnaise. As one who prefers potato wedges over thin shoestring fries, I find their thick chunky fries lovely. Of course, I would be happy to eat them just as they are, but a hint of truffle flavour can never be faulted. A wide variety of perfectly cooked main dishes are also available. I would recommend the Ravioles de Royans Palais (S$28) and Duck Confit Salad (S$25). Do not leave without trying a portion of their thick and luscious Crème Brûlée (S$12). Taste the fusion of sweet and salty by pairing their creamy custard with homemade salted caramel. Yums. Order delivery: foodpanda Deliveroo 390 Orchard Road, Palais Renaissance, #01-03/04, Singapore 238871 +65 6970 9792 Tue to Sat: 8am – 12am Mon & Sun: 8am – 11pm Facebook | Instagram | Website 2. Suju Masayuki Located in the posh Mandarin Gallery, Suju Masayuki holds a special place in my heart. I still recall my excitement when I first dined at this beautiful restaurant. Request window seats to make the most out of your dining experience. The quality of food here is immaculate. I love their focus on delivering exceptional food with humble intentions. The team recommends the Suju Plate Set (S$29) from the lunch menu, which contains 6 assorted side dishes served with rice and dessert. The price point is a steal considering the amount of food included in the set! Come at sundown to splurge on their Premium Dinner Course (S$118), where an endless variety of well-prepared Japanese dishes from the dinner menu are put in the spotlight. Begin your meal with 5 kinds of appetisers and assorted sashimi before indulging in the heavier mains. Sauteed chicken and stewed mackerel are the 2 main items included in the set. However, those with larger appetites may top up for the Tenderloin Steak (S$46) or Gindara Misozuke Yaki (S$46). The latter features a charcoal-grilled black cod. Simply delicious! Order delivery: foodpanda 333A Orchard Road, Mandarin Gallery, #04-05, Singapore 238897 +65 6737 7764 Daily: 11.30am – 10.30pm Facebook | Website 3. Alchemist Known for one of the best coffee beverages around Singapore, Alchemist has a gorgeous outdoor seating outlet at The Heeren. They take their coffee business pretty seriously and are always trying to perfect their brew. Credit – Alchemist This open-air cafe features large windows that allow a strong airflow. I also love the colour of the shades — brown and green — which assimilate the space into its surrounding nature. Their menu is kept simple but delivers effectively. Simply choose from Black, White or Mocha. A personal favourite would be their Iced White (S$7). I usually order hot drinks at cafes, as cold renditions are often diluted or not adequately cold. None of those problems are found in Alchemist's versions. The perfect ratio of espresso and milk is delivered with sufficient ice cubes, ensuring money is well spent and cravings are satisfied! With a book on the other hand, that is my coffee break settled. 260 Orchard Road, The Heeren, #01-ORA, Singapore 238855 Daily: 9am – 9pm Facebook | Instagram | Website 4. No.5 Emerald Hill No introduction is needed for No.5 Emerald Hill. As one of the pioneers in the cocktail bar industry, No.5 Emerald Hill specialises in a huge selection of martinis. Be stunned by their Peranakan-style building and glorious display of red lanterns hung behind those wooden doors. There are martini variations that you never thought could have existed. Under the Marvellous Martinis section, choose from the classic No.5 Lychee Martini or try something more creative, like the Cheng Tng Martini or No.5 Jello Martini. I thoroughly enjoyed their No.5 Earl Grey Martini, which carried floral notes with a stiff mouthfeel that is simply too hard to resist! Pair your cocktails with Chicken Wings (S$15 for half portion, S$22 for full portion), which are marinated with shrimp sauce and Chinese wine. Otherwise, heavy eaters should go for the Mini Beef Burgers (S$26) to fully satiate their hunger. 5 Emerald Hill Road, Singapore 229289 +65 6732 0818 Mon to Thu, Sun: 12pm – 2am Fri & Sat: 12pm – 3am Facebook | Instagram | Website 5. FLNT Located in the prime Orchard ION Sky, FLNT stands out as an exceptional destination that masterfully blends Peruvian and Japanese cuisines. From the moment you step into FLNT, the restaurant's chic and contemporary ambience sets the stage for an unforgettable dining adventure. The panoramic views of Singapore's skyline provide a stunning backdrop, enhancing the sensory delight of the culinary creations presented on each plate. At the heart of FLNT's menu lies the concept of Nikkei cuisine, a culinary tradition that emerged from the Japanese diaspora in Peru. This unique blend combines the meticulous artistry of Japanese culinary techniques with the bold, vibrant flavours of Peruvian ingredients. Signature dishes like the Yellowtail Ceviche (S$28) exemplify this fusion with its delicate slices of fresh fish dressed in a tangy wasabi sauce with corn for some freshness and hazelnuts for that extra crunch. If you are feeling boujee yet peckish, then the Foie Gras Taco (S$28) might be for you. I loved the play of textures between the creamy foie gras and the crunchy taco shell. For something more substantial, I would go for the Gindara (S$45). The cod is grilled to perfection, resulting in a beautifully caramelised exterior and a tender, flaky interior that melts in your mouth. Topped with eryngii mushroom tempura, lightly battered and fried to a golden crisp, adding a satisfying crunch that complements the tender cod. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or seeking a unique dining experience, FLNT promises to deliver a feast for the senses. Immerse yourself in the rich culinary traditions and innovative spirit of Nikkei cuisine, and let FLNT transport you to a world where flavours and cultures converge in the most delightful ways. Book your table today and embark on a culinary journey like no other. 2 Orchard Turn, ION Orchard, #55-01, Singapore 238801 +65 8028 1489 Daily: 12pm – 3pm, 6pm – 10.30pm Facebook | Instagram | Website 6. 小龙坎 Xiao Long Kan Hotpot As a hardcore fan of hotpot, I find the need to feature one hotpot spot in every listicle I write. Xiao Long Kan Hotpot specialises in traditional Chinese cuisine with one of the most mouth-numbing mala broths I have ever eaten. I usually eat medium or high spicy levels at stir-fry mala joints. However, I was already sweating from the heat of the small spicy level in the restaurant's Butter Spicy Soup (S$26). I mean, just look at the colour and sheer amount of fresh chillies thrown in. As if the spicy broth isn't enough, one of the most popular items sold here is their Hot and Spicy Beef (S$9 for half portion, S$18 for full portion). Liberally coated in dried chilli flakes, the tender beef slices are flavoured with a deep and robust spicy flavour. The business takes pride in the quality of sesame oil used as a dipping sauce. It was only from my experience here that I started to appreciate using sesame oil as my go-to hot pot dipping sauce. Naturally, the selection of fragrant sauces comes at a price — S$4 per pax. Order delivery: foodpanda 321 Orchard Road, Orchard Shopping Centre, #02-08, Singapore 238866 +65 6366 8885 Daily: 24 hours Facebook | Instagram 7. Hard Rock Cafe A legendary spot in the heart of Orchard, Hard Rock Cafe boasts some of the best live music and entertainment since forever. A spot that should only be reserved for the best moments in your life, set aside an entire evening (and night) here for endless fun! Regardless of your food choices, a couple of alcoholic drinks are a must when dining here. Signature cocktails include the most popular Hurricane (S$25.95) and Bahama Mama (S$25.95). Both cocktails consist of fruity notes from the inclusion of orange and pineapple juice. For those who prefer creamy textures, I'd recommend the latter since Malibu coconut is added to the concoction. Dig into All-American Sliders (S$29.95). It features a thick cut of onion ring topped onto a hefty beef patty and coleslaw stack, sandwiched between 2 toasted buns. Otherwise, stick with the fan favourite Wings (S$19.95). Order delivery: foodpanda Deliveroo 50 Cuscaden Road, HPL House, #02-01, Singapore 249724 +65 6235 5232 Daily: 11am – 11pm Facebook | Instagram | Website 10 best restaurants at Wheelock Place you must try 8. Osteria Mozza Osteria Mozza in Hilton Singapore Orchard offers a culinary experience marked by bold, balanced flavours and meticulous attention to detail. The taste profile of the dishes is a harmonious blend of rich, savoury, and fresh elements, reflecting Chef Nancy Silverton's commitment to high-quality ingredients and traditional Italian techniques. Ranging from Roasted Chicken Salad (S$26) to Grilled Cheese Sandwich (S$32) and even their signature Fennel Sausage Pizza (S$40), there's something for everyone. Everything here was a shocker to me. As simple as a Grilled Cheese Sandwich sounds, this was one of the best I have had. Surprisingly, this had layers of flavours and textures that I did not expect. It started off with a crispy and umami cheddar crust, and moved to a sharper, saltier Gruyère cheese that developed into a mildly sweet flavour as you chewed on it. On the other hand, the Fennel Sausage Pizza at Osteria Mozza is a noteworthy dish that expertly combines classic Italian flavours with high-quality ingredients. The pizza has a thin, crispy crust created from the well-fermented dough, giving it a light yet savoury texture. This crust is hand-stretched to the ideal thickness, combining a mild chewiness with a delightful crunch. All of which was toasted in their in-house brick oven for that extra layer of smoky depth. 333 Orchard Road, Level 5, Singapore 238867 +65 6831 6271 Mon to Fri: 12pm – 2.30pm, 3pm – 10pm Sat & Sun: 12pm – 2.30pm, 5pm – 10pm Facebook | Instagram | Website 9. Shake Shack I am saying this with caution but Shake Shack is my favourite eatery for American handheld fare, i.e., burgers. The popularity of this eatery can be proved by its insanely rapid expansion across Singapore in the span of just months. The burgers are done superbly here. My favourite has to be the SmokeShack Single (S$12.10). Bacon in burgers is a must-have, and those applewood-smoked versions found at Shake Shack introduce just the right amount of meatiness and saltiness to the construction. Not to mention, those soft and heavily buttered potato buns make the perfect shells to encase and soak up all that beefy juice. It would be a crime to leave the burger joint without a serving of their milkshakes. I'd go for the Peanut Butter any time of the day, but after they removed the flavour from the menu, Salted Caramel (S$7.90) is the next best option. Order delivery: foodpanda Deliveroo 541 Orchard Road, Liat Towers, #01-01, Singapore 238881 Daily: 10am – 10.30pm Facebook | Instagram | Website 10. KPO Cafe Bar Dine in an alfresco setting with huge vibes. Make reservations at KPO Cafe Bar along Orchard Road as soon as plans are made to avoid battling with others for a table. An entity on its own, this two-storey refurbished post office building sets a lively mood for the evening. A mix of cuisines is served here — think local to Japanese and Western delights. Sharing plates are an essential component of a night of drinks here. Sweet & Sour Pork (S$20), Wasabi Prawns (S$19) and Pork Cubes (S$18) sound like a decent platter. Liberally dressed in the brand's 'sworn to secrecy' marinade, then charbroiled till charred, the Premium Pork Ribs (S$33) are a showstopper for sure. Nothing beats the fragrance and aroma of grilled goods fresh off the rack. Wipe up all that dressing (choose between original or spicy) and wash everything down with a pint or two! The menu includes a variety of appetisers, such as Plum Blossom Burrata Salad (S$28). Signature dishes are known for their innovative flavour combinations with Singaporean twists. Highlights include Lunch Sets below S$16 and, of course, a variety of sake pairings. One of the standout features of Sake+ is its commitment to pairing sake with exquisite dishes that enhance the tasting experience. The menu is a celebration of Japanese cuisine, featuring both traditional and contemporary dishes that complement the diverse range of sakes. The Grilled Eel With Japanese Pepper (S$19) is most versatile with the various sakes. With the subtle sweet notes of the eel being elevated by the sweeter Kita-Akita Daiginjo (S$16 for 300ml). Sake+ is a chic, budget-friendly spot for a diverse culinary experience in the heart of Orchard Road. MODU MODU is Singapore's first restaurant dedicated to samgyetang, or traditional Korean ginseng chicken soup. It's the perfect fit for our year-round heat in all its comforting yet nourishing goodness, and is believed to boost vitality. The interior of the restaurant is sleek and earthy, with moody lighting and even an open-concept kitchen where you can watch the chefs in action. MODU's signature is the Beauty Samgyetang (S$37), which is packed with herbal ingredients like goji berries and houttuynia cordata. For something richer, try the Perilla Seed Samgyetang (S$38), which features a creamy, nutty broth. Beyond soup, you'll find appetisers like truffle mayo Korean Potato Pancakes (S$18 for 3 pieces) and the Tofu SamHap (S$18), which features grilled tofu with fish roe. Whether you're seeking soul-warming comfort food or a health-boosting meal, MODU brings an elegant, modern spin to this classic Korean dish, right in the heart of Orchard. 333A Orchard Road, Mandarin Gallery, #02-37, Singapore 238897 +65 8035 8833 Daily: 11am – 10pm Facebook | Instagram | Website 14. Tonkichi My heart hurts just the slightest bit, including Tonkichi — my favourite tonkatsu restaurant in Singapore — in this list. Hais, but good things must share, no? A staple since 1993, Tonkichi has built its name on expertly fried pork cutlets with a crispy golden crust and juicy, tender meat, thanks to its in-house batter and fresh oil used daily. They offer both the Hire (lean) Katsu Set (S$24) and Rosu (fatty) Katsu Set (S$24), so you can take your pick depending on how indulgent you're feeling, or get the Hire & Rosu Set (S$30) for the best of both worlds. Feeling peak boujee? The Kagoshima Kurobuta Rosu Katsu Set (S$32) hits the spot and comes complete with rice, soup, salad and sauce. Katsu aside, Tonkichi also offers comforting Japanese fare like the Salmon Teriyaki Set (S$28) — grilled salmon glazed in teriyaki sauce, served with rice, miso soup, and salmon sashimi — and the hearty Tonjiru Udon (S$17), featuring udon in a pork and vegetable miso soup. It comes with fancy proteins of choice, from Ayam Berempah (spiced fried chicken) (S$23) to Angus Beef Cheek Rendang (S$28). Dessert here is a must! Go for the Burbur Cha Cha (S$9), Chendol (S$10), or one of their Iced Thirst Quenchers, like the Pineapple, Assam & Ginger Soda (S$8).
