Dharmasthala burials: SIT to conduct expert survey before using radar at spot 13, no remains found at spot 14
MANGALURU: The SIT is likely to carry out an expert survey before proceeding with exhumation at spot number 13, the only site yet to be excavated, as identified by the witness-complainant. Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has not found any human remains at spot number 14, where digging began on Wednesday morning. Sources in the SIT told TNIE that SIT chief DGP Pronab Mohanty, who is in Belthangady to oversee the exhumation, is likely to take expert opinion first due to multiple electricity lines and proximity of the spot to the main road. The use of the Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR) system and drone-mounted radars at the site is also under consideration, said sources. The alleged burial site no 13 is located close to the main road in the vicinity of Nethravathi bathing ghat in Dharmasthala village. Out of the 13 alleged burial sites shown by the witness-complainant, human remains were discovered in only spot no 6. On Wednesday, SIT dug spot no 14 which is about 80 meters away from spot no 11, where human remains including skull was found earlier. However, sources said no human remains have been found at spot 14.

Tambaram civic staff suspended for swindling over Rs 1.3 crore in tax payments; fraud exposed in audit
CHENNAI: Tambaram Corporation has suspended two staff members attached to its revenue department on charges of swindling over Rs 1.3 crore in tax collected from residents. The highest swindle was about Rs 1 crore by a staffer in zone 4 during the last financial year. The employee, identified as Rani, submitted fake bank receipts to the corporation without depositing the actual collection. Officials said she allegedly admitted to the wrongdoing during questioning. The amount was recovered, and departmental proceedings have been initiated against her and others involved. In another case of misappropriation, a cashier in zone 5, Murali, diverted Rs 32 lakh between January and March this year by collecting property tax, water tax, and other dues in cash, but recording them as card payments in the official system. Officials said that since card transactions typically take 24 hours to reflect in the corporation's bank accounts, he was able to pocket the funds without detection as the fraud was not immediately detected. The issue came to light during an internal audit of the corporation's accounts, initiated on the orders of corporation commissioner S Balachander. Murali was suspended, and the amount has been recovered from him. Vijayalakshmi, an official in zone 5, has been issued a memo for failing to monitor the tax collection. A senior official told TNIE that further probes are on to determine if more such irregularities occurred. 'Once the full extent of the fraud is known, stringent disciplinary and legal action, including filing police complaints, will be taken against those found guilty,' the official said. Officials said the civic body has been ensuring strict action on wrongdoings and will continue with its internal audits.

PIL against BJP MLA for provocative speeches against Christians
MUMBAI: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Bombay High Court, seeking action against BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar for allegedly delivering provocative speeches against the Christian community. Gopichand Padalkar (HT Archives) (HT PHOTO) The petition, filed by Thane-based activist, Melwyn Fernandes, states that on June 17, during a public rally at Kupwad, Sangli, Padalkar made inflammatory and communally charged statements, linking the death by suicide of a woman from Jalna on June 6, to alleged 'forced religious conversions' by Christian clergies. According to the petition, these allegations constitute an abuse of public office, and are a 'malicious attempt to vilify the Christian community, foment communal disharmony, and usurp the role of investigative authorities, thereby undermining the rule of law'. The plea informed the court that a video of the MLA's speech is in the public domain on online platforms such as YouTube, social media networks and news broadcasts, where Padalkar is allegedly found saying that there were rewards for beating Christians who conduct religious conversions and for killing priests. Padalkar, from the Jat assembly constituency in Sangli district, allegedly proceeded to make communally divisive remarks, thereby stoking hatred and mistrust against the religious minority. The petition claimed that the sitting MLA mocked the foundational tenets of the Christian faith by ridiculing sacred religious beliefs. Providing a transcript of Padalkar's speech, the petition stated that he had allegedly said, 'If Jesus can really perform miracles, let him remove me from my post – then I will listen to you. But he doesn't do anything. So why all these protests?' The petitioner contended that despite widespread public outrage and peaceful protests by over 5,000 Christians and other concerned across Maharashtra, including Mumbai (at Azad Maidan), the authorities failed to initiate suo moto criminal action against Padalkar and his supporters. 'This inaction reflects institutional apathy, fosters political impunity, and erodes public trust in constitutional, governance and the rule of law,' the petition said. 'The statements have the dangerous potential to radicalise economically and socially vulnerable individuals, incite mob violence, and disrupt communal harmony and particularly against the Christian minorities,' it added. It requested the court to direct the state to register a First Information Report (FIR) against Padalkar under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups), 196 (promoting enmity based on religion, etc), 351 (criminal intimidation), 74 (assault against women) 352 (intentional breach of peace) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for 'provocative speeches that pose a grave threat to communal harmony, public order, and the secular ethos enshrined in the Constitution of India'.
