But Palumbo, 76, wasn't finished. 'I knew it was not a retirement situation for me,' he said.
Now Palumbo has lined up his next position: the Chicago Symphony Orchestra announced on Tuesday that he would serve as its next chorus director — only the third in the choir's 67-year history — beginning an initial three-year term in July.
'I love this chorus,' Palumbo said in a telephone interview from Chicago, where he was rehearsing the chorus. 'I love this city.'
Palumbo was a fixture at the Met from 2007 to 2024, helping turn the chorus into one of the most revered in the field. He could often be seen during performances racing around backstage, working with singers to refine bits of the score.
He was chorus master at Lyric Opera of Chicago from 1991 to 2007. At the Chicago Symphony, he said, he hoped to work with the singers on 'creating an identity as a chorus from the way we sing, and the way we devote ourselves to the music.'
Jeff Alexander, the Chicago Symphony's president, said that Palumbo had built a close relationship with the chorus during guest appearances over the years, creating 'an atmosphere of collaboration that yielded exceptional artistry.'
'We knew this would be the ideal choice to build on the legacy of this award-winning ensemble,' Alexander said in a statement.
Palumbo, who lives in Santa Fe and will commute to Chicago, is already at work with the Chicago singers. He will serve as guest chorus director this month for Verdi's Requiem, working with Riccardo Muti, the Chicago Symphony's former music director. In July, he will begin his tenure as chorus director with a performance of Mahler's 'Resurrection' Symphony at the Ravinia Festival, led by the festival's chief conductor, Marin Alsop.
While Palumbo has forged a close relationship with Muti, he said, he was still getting to know Klaus Mäkelä, the Chicago Symphony's incoming music director, who begins in 2027. (Palumbo said he has been watching videos of Mäkelä on YouTube: 'Everything he does musically is exciting,' he said.)
Palumbo said he hoped to stay in Chicago beyond the end of his initial term in 2028.
'I certainly am not planning on having a cutoff point,' he said. 'I intend to keep working.'

United flight with over 200 passengers declares 'mayday' with engine failure after takeoff from D.C.
A United Airlines flight bound for Germany declared "mayday, mayday, mayday" with an engine failure last month, forcing the jet to hastily retreat to Washington, D.C., tower recordings and the carrier said on Monday. The pilot of Flight 108, headed to Munich on July 25, declared that his left engine had failed and he was "declaring an emergency, mayday, mayday, mayday," according to cockpit and air traffic control audio published on the YouTube channel You can see ATC. Flight 108 was headed to Munich when the Boeing 787 with 219 passengers and 11 crew members had to turn back for Dulles International Airport, United said in a statement on Monday. Air traffic control and the pilot calmly hashed out details about the return as the plane dumped fuel to adjust for the proper weight needed for landing, the recordings revealed. The tower cleared out nearby air traffic for Flight 108's return to Dulles. "Speed at your discretion," air traffic control said. "Nobody behind you, nobody in front, sir." The jet "returned to Washington Dulles shortly after takeoff to address a mechanical issue," according to United. "The plane landed safely, and all passengers deplaned normally at the gate," the Chicago-based carrier continued. "The flight was subsequently canceled and we arranged alternate travel arrangements to take customers to their destination as soon as possible." The FAA said in a statement that it's aware of "possible engine issues" aboard the United flight and is investigating. Flight 108 was scheduled to leave Dulles at 5:40 p.m. EST and soar above the Atlantic overnight before landing at Munich International Airport at 5:40 a.m. CEST the next morning. But this edition of Flight 108 took off from Dulles at 6:11 p.m. EDT and landed back at the same airport at 8:49 p.m., according to the airline tracking database FlightAware.

Popular streamer Duke Dennis was arrested in San Antonio over the weekend after authorities accused him of trespassing in a local shopping mall. Dennis, 31, was arrested Saturday, Aug. 2, county jail records show, and charged with criminal trespassing and evading arrest. The popular content creator was released from custody late in the evening on Aug. 3 after meeting a cash bond of $1,000 per charge. USA TODAY has reached out to the San Antonio police department for additional information. Dennis, who has racked up millions of followers on YouTube and Twitch, is a member of the content group AMP, which also includes popular streamer Kai Cenat. AMP, short for Any Means Possible, is a collective of streamers, each with their own loyal fan base, who pool their audiences to create joint content, whether through online gaming streams or viral challenges. The other four members of the group are ImDavisss, Chrisnxtdoor, Fanum and Agent 00. Cenat, who catapulted to fame after joining the group, was present during the arrest, according to videos posted to social media. They show Dennis sitting on the floor of the mall handcuffed as Cenat, a floor above, captures video of the incident on his phone. Neither Cenat nor Dennis has shared an official statement regarding the arrest though the latter did post an Instagram story the evening of Sunday, Aug. 3, the same day as his release, with a black screen accompanied by the text: "Officially on vacation, need suggestions on where to go... See y'all later." His arrest comes on the heels of a major month of AMP. The group camped out in a Texas mega-mansion for the entirety of July, streaming for 12 hours each day for 31 days straight.
