SC population is closer to 23.7% says VCK general secretary D. Ravikumar

The Hindu12-05-2025

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi's general secretary and Villupuram M.P D. Ravikumar, on Monday has contradicted one of the resolutions passed by Pattali Makkal Katchi in the Vanniyar Youth Conference which demanded the reservations of the Scheduled Castes in Tamil Nadu to be increased by 2%.
In a social media post, Mr. Ravikumar asked how the party had arrived at the figure of 2% when the population of the scheduled castes are much higher.
'What is this number of 2%? It may be acceptable according to the 2011 population census. However, according to the Tamil Nadu Household Panel Survey's Pre-Baseline Survey of 2018-19 funded by State Government, the population of the Scheduled Caste is 23.7% in Tamil Nadu,' he said.

Amit Shah's speech in Madurai abominable, divisive and misleading: DMK leader A. Raja

DMK deputy general secretary and the Nilgiris MP, A. Raja, on Monday (June 9, 2025), said the speech of senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Madurai on Sunday was nothing but 'an utter lie, a pledge for divisive politics, and abominable vengeance.' Speaking to reporters in Chennai, he said it was unbecoming of a Home Minister to forget his position, duty, and responsibility by making baseless allegations aimed at creating communal divisions and inciting unrest in a peaceful State governed by an opposition party, for political gain. 'His speech was abominable and does not augur well for federalism or the smooth relationship between the State and the Centre,' Mr. Raja said, reiterating his belief that the people of Tamil Nadu would not be swayed by Mr. Shah's 'cheap tactics and politically motivated speech.' Mr. Raja claimed the BJP government at the Centre was unable to digest the development and progress achieved by the DMK government under the leadership of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who has ensured the continuation of welfare schemes and development projects using state funds, as the Centre has failed to allocate funds on time. 'The Centre and the BJP have enacted a shameful drama in violation of political decency because they cannot stomach the State's growth. This does not reflect well on Amit Shah and his position as Union Home Minister. He should stop such political games,' he contended. Rejecting the suggestion that Mr. Shah's visit to Tamil Nadu had been a 'shock' to the DMK, Mr. Raja said, on the contrary, it was the BJP that felt the shock of the DMK's achievements. 'That is why they sent Mr. Shah to Tamil Nadu. The people of Tamil Nadu have rejected the BJP's communal and divisive politics and stand solidly behind the DMK in all elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Tamil Nadu five times during the previous Lok Sabha polls. His repeated visits show who is afraid of whom,' he said. Mr. Raja claimed the DMK had fulfilled all its electoral promises except for its assurance to government employees (on restoring old pension scheme). 'But the Chief Minister has constituted a committee to study their demands. We are not afraid of Modi or Amit Shah. Their ideology may win elections elsewhere, but the Dravidian ideology is an antidote to the BJP's ideology. They cannot set foot in Tamil Nadu as long as the Dravidian ideology is alive,' he said. When asked about the Lord Murugan conference (Murugan maanadu) being planned by the BJP in Madurai (on June 22), he charged that unlike the conference organised by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, the BJP's motive was to incite communal sentiments against minorities. 'The people of Madurai do not accept their motives. Why has Mr. Amit Shah, who ranted about his love for Tamil, not answered why the Centre has not accepted the report on Keeladi (excavation)? Their mindset is against Tamils and the Dravidian ideology, and they will face the consequences in the 2026 Assembly elections. The visits of Mr. Modi and Mr. Shah only strengthened the DMK's prospects,' Mr. Raja felt.

DMK in panic mode after HM Shah's visit to TN: Union Minister Murugan

Chennai: Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, L. Murugan, on Monday claimed that the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu has gone into 'panic mode' following Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent visit to the state. In a strongly-worded statement, Murugan said, 'Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who once mocked that no matter how many 'Shahs' come to Tamil Nadu, the DMK cannot be shaken, now appears frozen in fear.' He asserted that the people of Tamil Nadu are preparing to deliver a 'final verdict' against what he described as a corrupt and misgoverned regime in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. Murugan accused the DMK of rampant corruption, maladministration, and betrayal of public trust. 'From TASMAC scams estimated at over ₹35,000 crore, to blatant nepotism, the DMK regime has looted public wealth,' he alleged. He also drew a parallel with the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi and its alleged liquor policy scam, suggesting a pattern of misgovernance among Opposition-ruled states. Further criticising the CM Stalin-led government, Murugan blamed the administration for worsening the condition of the poor, citing rising inflation, high unemployment, deterioration in law and order, and a spike in crimes against women. 'Liquor flows unchecked across the state, drug cartels flourish, and Scheduled Tribes are being criminalised under this oppressive regime,' he said. Murugan also questioned the DMK's oft-repeated claim of promoting Tamil language and culture. 'Despite all their rhetoric, the DMK has done nothing substantial to promote higher education in Tamil — particularly in technical fields like medicine and engineering,' he added. Referring to the upcoming Murugan Devotees' Conference in Thiruparankundram, the Union Minister described it as a 'massive show of faith' and predicted a political transformation in the state. 'Just as we are witnessing victories in Odisha, Delhi, Haryana, and Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, too, will soon follow. As Amit Shah said, 'we will not rest until the DMK is voted out,'' Murugan declared.

PMK founder Ramadoss hints at resolving stand-off with son Anbumani

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss on Sunday (June 8, 2025) said, 'Age is only a number', reeling out names of popular 'older' politicians such as former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed, suggesting he still has enough fight in him in politics. However, he appeared optimistic about giving 'good news' about the resolution of his conflict with his son Anbumani Ramadoss, which threatens to split the party. Interacting with journalists in Chennai, Dr. Ramadoss confirmed meeting RSS ideologue and Thuglak editor S. Gurumurthy again in Chennai (following an earlier meeting in his native town), but refused to reveal whether discussions with him and with Dr. Anbumani were fruitful. PMK's party constitution Sources in the party said Dr. Ramadoss is seeking larger share of the powers to operate while asking Dr. Anbumani to continue as the 'working president'. Dr. Anbumani has reportedly agreed to allow his father to take the lead in deciding the electoral alliance and negotiating the seats while he wished to remaining as the party's 'president', a post to which he was earlier anointed unanimously. 'Dr. Ayya (Ramadoss) wants powers to sign Form A and Form B too, which would give him powers over selection of candidates and make appointments. But, Dr. Anbumani wants to be allowed to continue as president and make appointments within the party,' said a senior leader. In the party's bylaws, Rule 13 states that party founder should be invited and his guidance is necessary to call for the general council and executive council meetings. However, Rule 15 explicitly states the party president, appointed by the general council, will head the party's political committee, executive council, general council, and state conference and has the powers to control the party's funds, properties owned by the party and its bank accounts. Rule 12 states that the general council will consist of district presidents, district secretaries, treasurer, vice-president, deputy secretary and area secretaries at the Union, Town Panchayats, municipal corporations and corporations along with representatives from linguistic, religious, and caste-based minorities. The executive council will consist of party president, general secretary, treasurer, organisation secretary, deputy general secretaries, vice-presidents, headquarters secretaries, disciplinary action committee members, property protection group and district presidents and secretaries make up the party's executive council. A senior leader says while it is true that general council has to be held in the presence of the party founder and its affairs conducted under his guidance, it is not binding on the general council to accept his guidance or decisions. 'The president continues to have the powers to appoint office bearers, which makes up the general council. Ultimately, the general council can reject his guidance. This is perhaps why Doctor Ayya began removing and re-appointing district president, secretaries and other office bearers. But, I don't think he (Dr. Ramadoss) has the powers to do it,' he added.
