Whether you're choosing a car for a first-time owner or a veteran motorist, buying the right vehicle can be a challenge. And by the 'right' car, we mean a safe and reliable car that does not break the bank.
To be able to recommend such a prize collection of safe vehicles that are budget-friendly, the highly regarded Consumer Reports (CR) has once again tied up with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to find the safest and most reliable vehicles in the land.
Camry, Forester and Explorer rank as the safest
Out of some 260 models on the market today, Consumer Reports says that the following three vehicles are not only the safest and most reliable on sale now, but they offer enough model years to be budget-friendly.
For sedans, the safest is the Toyota Camry built from 2018.
For small SUVs, the top pick is the Subaru Forester from 2019.
For the mid-sized SUVs it's the Ford Explorer from 2020.

As a bonus, CR tells us that the highest rated electric vehicle is the Tesla Model Y taking into consideration factors such as speed and ease of charging and range, areas in which the Y excels.
Consumer Reports evaluates cars based on four key criteria—road test, reliability, owner satisfaction and safety.
To make the list, a vehicle must receive a CR score of at least 3 out of 5 for tests that include acceleration, braking as well as routine and emergency handling and fuel economy. CR also evaluate usability, fit and finish, noise, ride, and safety systems.

Top rated vehicles must also receive a score of at least 2 out of 5 for their controls and displays— meaning that CR excluded vehicles fitted with the most confusing displays and controls which can be a distraction for drivers.
Another critical factor for CR, owner satisfaction is based on whether a CR member would definitely get the same car if they had a chance to do it over again, effectively measuring whether a car lived up to its owner's expectations.
In addition, all of the vehicles on the list have electronic stability control (ESC) at standard equipment, a key safety feature in avoiding traffic accidents.
Each of these top rated vehicles also boast a high 'G' for Good rating in five different IIHS crash tests including small overlap front test, moderate overlap front test, updated side test and pedestrian front crash prevention test.
Vehicles with curb weights of under 2750 lbs do not appear on the list as they are considered too small to provide sufficient crash protection, especially when impacting with larger vehicles.
Readers may also realize that full-size SUVs and pickups are not on the list as well as sports cars which are considered by CR to invite excessive risk.

Heat Soaked Road Buckles, Sending Car Flying

Read the full story on The Auto Wire We've seen cars go flying before, but never because the road has buckled from heat, but just such a thing was caught on camera. Had it not been captured on video, we don't know if we or anyone else with any sense would've believed this happened, it's just that road buckling in question happened in Cap Girardeau, Missouri during a recent heatwave. We've personally seen pavement get so hot in places like Phoenix, Arizona that it becomes mushy, but never before have we seen a road buckle under heat. But this one obviously did and right in front of the local Honda dealership. However, the car that went flying the moment the road became a ramp was a Toyota Corolla. As the compact car is approaching the seam in the road, which already is looking a little uneven, both ends suddenly lift up, the attached curbing rising up like logs in upheaval. The Corolla driver fails to notice the sudden change in the road's surface, and the little car goes flying through the air like in a Dukes of Hazzard episode. When the Toyota comes back down to the pavement, the front end slams on the street with a sickening sound. We hope no serious damage was done to the vehicle, but the risk certainly is there. Plenty of people who have seen the footage on social media had the same thought we did: had the driver been paying attention, he should have been able to hit the brakes and would've avoided the launch into the air. Plus, there's a warning sign of some sort along with traffic cones where the seam in the road is already uneven. That alone should've put the Corolla driver on alert. This just goes to show some people just don't pay attention when they're driving. That and roads can apparently buckle during a heatwave. Musk Suffers New Blow as Tesla Sales Drop for Second Quarter

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Elon Musk's Tesla reported another decline in deliveries in the second quarter, deepening the electric vehicle company's slump after a slower start to the year. Newsweek reached out to Tesla's press team via email for comment. Why It Matters Musk, once a vocal supporter and informal adviser to President Donald Trump, has stepped away from his government role leading the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and returned to focus on his companies, including Tesla. Musk and Trump's public split and fallout included character jabs as well as policy disagreements, including Trump's prized "big, beautiful" bill, which seeks to make the 2017 tax cuts permanent while cutting Medicaid funding and ending electric vehicle tax credits. Musk enjoys numerous lucrative contracts with the government across companies, including SpaceX, which Trump has threatened to revoke. The drop in sales and deliveries may signal an extended consumer backlash against the Tesla brand. Protests and vandalism targeting Tesla, which began in response to Musk's time in the Trump administration, have continued since his departure. What To Know On Wednesday, Tesla reported its second-quarter production and delivery figures, producing 410,244 vehicles, primarily Model 3 and Model Y cars, and delivering 384,122. Deliveries are considered a proxy for sales. The figures are about 14 percent lower than in the second quarter of 2024, when Tesla produced 410,831 vehicles and delivered 443,956. The second-quarter findings are also lower than those of the first quarter of 2025, which reported 362,615 vehicles produced and 336,681 deliveries, representing a decline of approximately 13 percent from the first quarter of 2024. The first-quarter slump coincided with Musk's formal affiliation with the president and his appointment to the DOGE position. The numbers represent a longer three-year decline in sales. In Europe, Tesla sales have dropped notably, with the company selling 8,729 vehicles in the European Union last month, a 40.5 percent decrease from the 14,682 sold in May 2024, according to data released on Wednesday by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Musk has also been pursuing a political agenda in Europe, with recent interventions in the German election and British politics. The electric vehicle market has become increasingly saturated since Tesla's inception, with numerous other manufacturers now producing hybrid electric cars, including BYD, BMW, Volkswagen, and others. In addition to its fleet, Tesla is also focusing on its robotaxi, self-driving service. What People Are Saying Tesla CEO Elon Musk, during a conference call in April, said he was "extremely optimistic about the future of the company," which will be "fundamentally based on large-scale autonomous cars and large-scale—being large volume—vast numbers of autonomous humanoid robots." Musk continued: "The value of a company that makes truly useful autonomous humanoid robots and autonomous useful vehicles at scale, at low cost—which is what Tesla is going to do—is staggering. I continue to believe that Tesla, with excellent execution, will be the most valuable company in the world by far." President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday: "We might have to put DOGE on Elon," adding that "DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon." What Happens Next Tesla remains one of the largest suppliers of electric vehicles in the world, but competitors have taken note of the disappointing numbers and are likely to move to secure a greater market share. On Tuesday, Trump noted that he will "have to take a look" into deporting Musk, who was born in South Africa and became a naturalized United States citizen more than two decades ago.
