Cycle coast to coast
One of the best ways to explore Singapore's urban-nature balance is on two wheels, with its growing network of cycling paths that wind through scenic parks, cityscapes and along waterfronts. The Park Connector Network combines landscaped footpaths with cycle lanes, connecting parks, nature reserves and other green spaces across the city. Here, there's the opportunity to try stand-up paddleboarding in the calm, clear waters off Siloso Beach. Head out in the morning to experience the calm and quiet before the world wakes up. For beginners, the flat lagoons have plenty of shade for practising in, while intermediate paddleboarders can venture further out. There's also the option for kayaking, surfing and swimming from the beach.

Hike the Southern Ridges

The Southern Ridges is a great starting point, with a 10-kilometre route that connects a series of parks. Mount Faber Park and Telok Blangah Hill Park along the route offer panoramic views of the city, while Henderson Waves Bridge, with its unique wave-like structure, is a great section for feeling immersed in the trees – you might spot lizards, sunbirds or wild orchids along the way. More hidden spots like the coastal Labrador Nature Reserve provide a soundscape of waves lapping the shore.
Enjoy al fresco dining
Singapore's wellness extends into its dining scene, with beautiful places to refuel and nourish the body and mind. There's a host of al fresco dining spots to choose from, where nature and food come together for a unique experience.

Take in a bird's eye view at MacRitchie Reservoir
MacRitchie Reservoir is a great spot for moments of reflection, with trails and boardwalks that wind through some 2,000 hectares of forest — while it's the oldest reservoir in Singapore and is rich in biodiversity, the trails are well-maintained. For a different perspective, head to the TreeTop Walk, a suspension bridge that stretches through the forest canopy between Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang. Long-tailed macaques are fairly common in the reserve, while the route also offers up the chance to see the critically endangered banded leaf monkey.
Go on an urban hike
Alternatively, stage your own biophilic archicture tour around Singapore's Central Business District, where you can experience fully its unique offering as a city in nature. From the organic curves of the CapitaSpring building complete with leafy surrounds and sky garden (a 2023 Building of the Year Winner) to Marina One, flanked by two parks and designed to appear as 'a plant-covered mountain rising into the Singapore skyline.' I've travelled all over Canada, but nothing compares to its 'ocean playground'
My travels across Canada have rewarded me with everything from sweeping mountainscapes to vibrant city life, but nowhere captured my heart quite like Nova Scotia — the 'ocean playground'. Thrashed by the wild swells of the North Atlantic, this tiny Maritime province on the country's eastern tip is shaped by the sea. As one lifelong Nova Scotian resident tells me: 'Water is physically in our blood.' With its dramatic cliff faces, salty fishing towns and craggy hiking trails, Nova Scotia feels refreshingly rugged. But there's a wealth to explore beyond its natural wonders. It's where the Cajun people of Louisiana's bayous originated and where Irish immigrants landed after fleeing the famine. It's home to candy-striped lighthouses, a lush wine-growing region, six UNESCO World Heritage sites and a blossoming food scene fuelled by world-class seafood. But since it remains relatively unexplored, the waterfronts and villages are quieter than any of the four Canadian provinces I'd visited before — so much so that there were times when I was the only person in sight. Here's everything I saw and did in a six-day trip. Travelling from the UK, most of you will be flying into Halifax, Nova Scotia's capital. The best of the region lies outside the city, but there are still a few places worth visiting before you venture out. I enjoyed the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, which contains the entire painted home of famed folk artist Maud Lewis and insightful exhibits on the indigenous Mi'kmawq community. Halifax's fine-dining scene is a real treat for food lovers. A local recommendation is Tribute, a seasonal grilled restaurant known for its hand-rolled pasta and smoky fish ($105/£56 for a tasting menu). Nearby Mystic offers an immersive experience that will leave your tongue tingling (even the buttered radishes were seasoned to perfection). Finally, a good half-day trip from Halifax is Peggy's Cove, a quaint cliffside town home to 35 residents and a working lighthouse that looks like something straight out of a 19th-century novel. It's only a 40-minute drive each way, so you could easily cover it off in a morning. Where to begin with Mahone Bay. This vibrant seaside town is packed with charm, and my time exploring its colourful streets and magnificent outskirts was the highlight of my time in Nova Scotia. I stayed in Black Forest Cabins ($239 or £129 minimum per night), a farmhouse retreat hidden among trees but close to restaurants and pubs to try while you're visiting. The cabins are a two-minute walk from the Bay-to-Bay trail, which you can bike or walk. I spent the evening surrounded by birdsong, undisturbed by anyone, reading a book on a bench by a babbling stream. The Black Forest is a great base to explore the surrounding area. Culture vultures can visit filming locations for TV shows such as Solomon's Crossing and We Were Liars. Elsewhere, the turquoise water of St Margaret's Bay is perfect for wild swimming, while Chester village also has a beautiful natural saltwater pool. If you prefer to stay on dry land, I recommend booking a tour of the small islands hugging this part of the coast with Salty Dog Sea Tours ($86/£46 per adult). Not only do you get the history of the famed Oak Island (the subject of a 12-season-long reality TV show thanks to 250-year-old rumours of treasure), but if you ask, you might get a chance to do some seal and shark spotting like we did. There's nothing like feeling salty air in your hair as you bounce along the waves. This sprawling national park ($6.50/£3.50 for a day pass) is the perfect way to spend anything from a day to a week-long camping trip. At Mills Falls, a spectacular natural waterfall that's easily accessible on foot, you can swim and sunbathe. Thrillseekers can paddle along the streams, and hikers will find plenty of viewpoints to pitch up at. If you're interested in learning more about the Mi'kmawq community, the park offers guided tours with local elders who explain the deep relationship between the community and the land. Avoid Friday and Saturday when the park is at its busiest. I visited on Sunday afternoon, and it was practically deserted. The Evangeline Trail meanders for 292km of scenic roadway, past rolling hills and green fields along the Western and Northern parts of Nova Scotia. You'll need to rent a car for this one, but if you or someone you're travelling with can drive, it's worth it. This part of the province prides itself on being the 'land of Orchards, Vineyards and Tides', so there are plenty of eye-catching stops along the way to break up the journey and stretch your legs. My favourite was Bridgetown, often referred to as the prettiest village in Nova Scotia. Seafood lovers should visit Hall's Harbour lobster pound, which has a restaurant on-site that serves 1.5lb lobster meals for $40/£21. I saw one man tucking into a seven-and-a-half-pound giant, with a personalised bib. Grand Pre National Historic Site ($9/£4.80 per adult) is a must-visit for history lovers to learn more about the native Acadian community and mythology. More Trending You can spend the night in this UNESCO World Heritage Site as you explore the local vineyards and acres of lush greenery for $133.25/£61 per night. Nearby is Wolfville, home to Nova Scotia's burgeoning wine scene. It's yet to be exported worldwide, so visiting is your only chance to taste the real deal (I'd recommend tasting the local special, Tidal Bay) Domaine de Grand Pre Winery, a family-run business, is just one of many you can visit for a tasting and their onsite restaurant, Le Caveau (chef's tasting menu is $80 or £43), is home to the most delicious food I tasted all trip. For a picture-perfect viewpoint, the nearby Evangeline Inn has a deserted lookout to steal a dreamy summer moment (and pretend you're Anne Shirley as I did). First look: Inside The Blue Jasmine, Thailand's gorgeous new train
Gone are the days of rattling along in a fan-cooled carriage with sagging curtains and a chatty uncle who won't stop telling his life story until 3am. Thailand's classic Bangkok–Chiang Mai sleeper train is getting some high-class competition in the form of a navy-gold beauty called The Blue Jasmine. It's essentially a boutique hotel that just happens to roll through some of the country's most beautiful landscapes. Poised to make its inaugural nine-day journey from November 16-24, the locomotive trades cramped bunks, dim corridors and platform snacks for private cabins, full dining cars and lounges with wraparound windows. This nine-day, slow-travel odyssey links three UNESCO World Heritage cities: Ayutthaya, Uthai Thani and Sukhothai with plenty of detours such as riverside almsgiving, mountain-top picnics, pottery-making and silk weaving sessions. On board, you can sip craft cocktails as the countryside drifts past. Off the train, you'll bed down in boutique heritage hotels and wander through markets at a pace that lets you actually remember their names. Besides the plush seats and postcard stops, this project is a ' New Thailand' tourism strategy – a move towards high-value, low-impact travel. It's about drawing in visitors who don't just tick off temples, but stay longer, spend more locally and leave a lighter footprint. In an age where overtourism is a growing concern, the train spreads visitors across smaller cities and rural areas, putting money into communities that usually watch the tourism boom from the sidelines. The train leaves the station this November, with more departures lined up for January, February, March, July, November and December 2026. The route starts in Bangkok, winds through Ayutthaya, Uthai Thani, Sukhothai, and Chiang Mai, then loops back to the capital.

One popular European city has been named the safest place to visit, according to new research When it comes to planning a holiday, there's a lot to consider from the local cuisine and attractions to accommodation. However, one crucial factor is the safety of the destination. According to an analysis by tour company Riviera Travel, which launched two cruise ships last year, one city has been crowned the safest in Europe. The study took into account current crime levels and the increase in crime over the past five years - and it comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. An overall safety score was then calculated, revealing how safe each location is, reports the Express. Topping the list with an overall safety score of 44.14 is the Croatian city of Dubrovnik. Not only is Dubrovnik a safe place to visit, but it also attracts crowds of tourists with its medieval architecture and status as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Known as the 'Pearl of the Adriatic', the city boasts a charming Old Town for visitors to explore. Dubrovnik scored 8.76 from Numbeo for crime level, indicating it's 'very low' and 35.38 for crime increasing over the last five years, also deemed 'low'. Coming in second with an overall safety score of 55.81 is Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Like Dubrovnik, Tallinn is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a medieval city. Visitors can safely enjoy a plethora of cafes and restaurants serving local cuisine. Poland's capital, Warsaw, ranks third with a safety score of 60.19. Despite seeing a 'moderate' increase in crime over the past five years, the popular destination maintains a 'very low' crime level. Many tourists flock to this city to delve into its rich history and sample the vast array of Polish cuisine on offer. Prague, the Czech Republic's capital, came in fourth with a score of 60.88, its 'moderate' crime rating over the past five years contributing to an overall 'very low' crime score. As the largest city in the Czech Republic, Prague draws in thousands of tourists annually, who are captivated by its gothic cathedrals and skyline filled with spires. Kraków took fifth place with a score of 64.31. According to Riviera Travel, it has a 'low' crime level of 20.7 and a 'moderate' increase in crime over the past five years of 43.61. Kraków is home to Europe's largest medieval market square, a renowned Old Town, and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, Amsterdam ranked sixth with a score of 71.09, followed by Munich in Germany with 73.74 and Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. Zurich was ninth, with Budapest, the capital of Hungary, rounding out the top ten.
