Makhlouf's ambiguous announcement: Elite force on Syria's coast
Shafaq News/ On Thursday, Syrian businessman Rami Makhlouf announced the formation of an elite force in the country's coastal region, referring to undisclosed agreements tied to what he described as the 'Coastal Province.'
In a post on his official Facebook page, Makhlouf—cousin of former President Bashar al-Assad—stressed that the force is not intended to engage armed groups currently present in the area, but rather to secure the region following their withdrawal.
He warned that while certain agreements concerning the region are being finalized 'in ink,' parallel efforts to undermine them 'with blood' are underway. Although he pledged to protect the region, he offered no further details about the nature of the arrangements or the parties involved.
Makhlouf also mentioned a 'nearly complete system' encompassing security, military, economic, and social components, suggesting that preparations are underway for a broader administrative framework in the coastal zone.
The post drew criticism online, including from voices within the coastal community. Some questioned whether Makhlouf personally manages the account, while others speculated that he may be acting with support from an external power—Russia being among the names cited.
His statement comes amid ongoing instability in Syria's coastal region. In March, the area experienced a wave of violence following coordinated attacks by armed groups described as remnants of the former regime. The incidents were followed by reports of lawlessness and widespread abuses.
Makhlouf, once considered one of Syria's most powerful businessmen, has maintained a low public profile in recent years after falling out with authorities over financial disputes and the control of key assets. His reemergence has rekindled speculation over shifting dynamics within Syria's post-conflict power structure.

Iraq's CF rejects PM Al-Sudani's leadership consensus
Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, Iraq's Coordination Framework (CF) revealed that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani informally raised the idea of agreeing on the country's three top leadership positions ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 11, 2025. Speaking to Shafaq News, senior Framework figure Hassan Faddam confirmed that the proposal, shared privately with a member of the bloc, called for a political consensus on the presidency, speakership, and premiership before voters head to the polls — a move aimed to prevent post-election disputes and streamline the process of forming the next government. Despite the rationale, the CF, a political alliance of predominantly Shiite parties, rejected it as ''premature'' and ''inconsistent with Iraq's established political process.'' Faddam emphasized that leadership roles are ultimately determined by post-election parliamentary dynamics, including the distribution of seats and emerging alliances. He also added that any early agreement risks being unsettled by shifting domestic and regional developments. 'These matters can only be resolved after the election results clarify the size and influence of each bloc,' he explained. Iraq's history of government formation is marked by lengthy delays and political deadlock. After the October 2021 elections, negotiations extended for more than a year before a new cabinet was formed.

New Era for Iraqi trade: Nation joins International Transit Network
Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, the Iraqi Border Ports Authority announced that Iraq has officially joined the global (TIR) system, enabling streamlined international transit operations through its territory in partnership with the International Road Transport Union (IRU). The authority indicated in a statement that the initiative was launched under the direct supervision of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, integrating the TIR system with Iraq's government platforms across all land, sea, and air border crossings. Two successful pilot shipments were completed using Iraqi territory. The first shipment began in Turkiye's Mersin Port and passed through Iraq en route to Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi. The second originated in Poland, traversed Turkiye and Iraq, and continued onward to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The statement affirmed the initiative's success in reducing costs and delivery time while generating non-oil government revenues for Iraq. 'This international trade corridor through Iraqi territory adds to a growing network of regional and global transit routes,' the authority noted, attributing the achievement to improved security conditions and inter-agency coordination among transport, customs, and border authorities. The ports authority also emphasized the system's broader socio-economic benefits, saying it will 'create jobs along transport corridors and provide employment opportunities for Iraqis across diverse sectors.'
