Retiree paradise now sees thousands starving and homeless
Carolyn Simon (pictured) is one of those, having resorted to sleeping upright in the front seat of her car for two months due to not being able to afford a place to live. She spoke with WSVN about her troubles in May, revealing she is reliant on social security for money and parks up inside well-lit parking to catch some shuteye. Demonstrating her sleeping stance to the outlet, the 78-year-old said: 'Since I've been here, I sleep here in this seat, scrunched down. My ankles and legs are swollen from having to sit all the time. I buy jug water, it's cheaper. And I eat one meal a day, for $2.02, and then I get a free senior drink.'
Carolyn resorted to showering at a nearby gym thanks to her Medicare plan which gets her inside the facility for free. She added: 'It can happen to anyone. Don't think it can't, because I never thought about it.' In 2019, the amount of people aged 65 and over accounted for almost eight percent of the homeless population in Miami-Dade County, the Homeless Trust said. That number had nearly doubled to a shocking 14 percent in 2024, with projections indicating it could hit 22 percent by the year 2030.'
In January of this year, the Department of Housing and Urban Development said in a report that homelessness had reached a record high in 2024. Over 770,000 had experienced homeless on a single night in 2024, an increase of around 18 percent compared to 2023. The report found that 146,000 found that older adults had experienced homelessness, an increase of six percent.
Maria Navarro (pictured), another elderly Florida resident like Carolyn, spoke with CBS News last October, revealing how despite working seven days a week, she still has to sleep in her car. She told the outlet it is very depressing at times and that instead of enjoying retirement she uses a dumpster area to shower using buckets. Maria works at a mall as a security guard near where she sleeps every night, but the money is still not enough to secure housing, she added.
The Housing and Social Services Manager for the City of Pompano Beach, Cassandra Rhett, said that soaring rents was forcing the elderly onto the streets. She said: 'The rent is skyrocketed. That's a main factor of why all these seniors are on the street, is because they cannot afford the rent.' Ron Book, Chairman of the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust, said homeless seniors are among the most vulnerable. He told the outlet: 'The face of homelessness has changed. I want people in our community to think about their mothers, and their grandmothers, and their grandfathers being homeless for the first time.
After Carolyn's story was aired last month, local leaders banded together to help her find accommodation. She has now moved into a one-bedroom apartment in a 55 and over community. Following the move, Carolyn said: 'It's unbelievable. I mean, I'm in shock. Everything's moved so fast, everybody's been so wonderful.'

Urgent warning to parents over toxic kids' toys sold at Walmart
The Pennsylvania Department of Health has urged parents to look over their children's bikes following a recall over fears of injury or death from lead poisoning. Around 200 units of SPPTTY Kids 14- and 18-inch bicycles were recalled on July 10 after lead levels exceeded the federal lead content ban. The bicycles are pink with brown seat covers, brown handlebars, brown pedals and brown baskets. Each of them also have 'SPPTTY' and 'New Sport Bike' printed on downtubes. The affected products were sold on Walmart 's website from August 2024 through December 2024 for around $85. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has advised consumers to stop using the bikes immediately and contact Shenzhen Yihuachuang Technology for a refund. Owners of the bikes are requested to disassemble them, take a photo, and send it to lishkjie@ before disposing of the pieces. As of now, no injuries or deaths related to the recalled bikes have been reported. The bikes were sold on Walmart's website from August 2024 through December 2024 for around $85 'This recall serves as an important reminder to parents and caregivers to ensure that young children have routine screening for lead exposure,' said Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Debra Bogen. 'Early identification of elevated lead levels can reduce the harms from lead exposure, including its harm to children's behavior and development.' Experts suggest parents and caregivers bring children to health care providers to discuss the possibility of blood lead testing. Children under age six have the greatest risk of health problems from lead exposure, which could lead to brain or nervous system damage. While lead-related recalls are typically uncommon, there have already been multiple products recalled from dangerous exposure. More than 25,000 containers of baby food sold at Target were recalled in April over a lead contamination. Publix voluntarily recalled baby food a month later over the same fear, after the products were distributed to all eight states of operation. Walmart has grappled with a string of product recalls by officials this year. Several products sold at Walmart stores nationwide have already been recalled this year A customer shops for toys at a Walmart Supercenter in Denver, Colorado One of the company's first recalls of the year was for over 12,000 units of chicken broth sold nationwide following concerns of deadly bacteria contamination. Duda Farm Fresh Foods pulled its Marketside celery sticks from Walmart stores in 29 states in April due to a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Other recalled products sold at Walmart include popular iron supplements, water bottles that left shoppers with permanent vision loss, and Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettucine pasta, which resulted in three deaths from listeria contamination. A listeria infection usually causes fever, headache and diarrhea in most people, but it can be deadly for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and those with weak immune systems.

Lupita Nyong'o opens up about health diagnosis: ‘Let's prioritize this chronic condition'
Lupita Nyong'o has spoken out about her experience with uterine fibroids during Fibroid Awareness Month. Nyong'o discovered she had the non-cancerous growths in 2014, the same year she won her Oscar, and underwent surgery to remove 30 fibroids. She highlighted that while some individuals are asymptomatic, others suffer debilitating symptoms such as heavy bleeding and pain, noting the condition's high prevalence, particularly among Black women. Nyong'o criticized the normalization of female pain and called for increased societal discussion, early education, better screening, and comprehensive research into women's reproductive health. She has joined Democratic congresswomen and senators to introduce legislative bills aimed at expanding research funding, improving early detection, and increasing public awareness for uterine fibroids, also partnering on a research grant.

Jim Kelly reveals newborn grandson has emergency surgery after being born with 'unexpected medical complications'
Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly has revealed that his newly-born grandson underwent successful emergency surgery after 'unexpected medical complications' following his birth. The former Bills star announced on Instagram earlier this week that his daughter, Erin and her husband, Parker had recently welcomed their first child, and asked for prayers with 'Little Bean' set for a procedure. Kelly later shared on Tuesday that his grandson - whose name he has not yet revealed - was set to undergo the surgery at 7am on Wednesday. And thankfully, the 65-year-old was able to share with fans afterwards that 'everything went well' as his grandson embarks on his 'healing journey.' 'We are overwhelmed with gratitude for God's hand in every detail today… for highly skilled and compassionate doctors and nurses… and for every single prayer that's been lifted on our behalf,' he wrote on Instagram. He continued: 'But this is just the beginning — and we humbly ask you to PLEASE KEEP PRAYING as the healing journey begins. 'Our continued prayer is that Little Bean's body will begin to heal and adjust to all that took place this morning… that his body will strengthen… and that, in time, he'll be able to come off the ventilator and be able to go home.' While Kelly has not disclosed what medical complications his grandson has endured, he previously said that 'this road has brought us to our knees.' The five-time Pro Bowler received a flood of well-wishes on the latest post, including from former teammates Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed. 'GOD is GOOD ALL THE TIME AND ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD........ Continued Prayers for little Bean,Erin,Parker and the whole Kelly Family,' Reed wrote. Kelly has also had significant health battles himself in retirement. He was initially diagnosed with oral cancer in 2013, and later had part of his jaw removed. The disease returned in 2014, while he had to undergo a 12-hour surgery in 2018 to remove a new cancer from his jaw and neck. Kelly has ultimately battled the disease a total of four times, and last year celebrated 10 years since his final radiation treatment.
