Barefoot man seen wrestling large alligator on interstate, Florida video shows

Miami Herald30-04-2025

A barefooted man was seen wrestling an alligator on Interstate 95 in North Florida, and the resulting video has been watched more than 9 million times on social media.
While the bout could easily have been mistaken for a stunt, it was 100% real, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office wrote in an April 28 Facebook post.
The alligator had slipped through 70-mph traffic to end up in the median and someone had to get it out, officials said. That someone was mixed martial arts fighter Mike 'Blue Collar Brawler' Dragich, who is also a licensed trapper.
'If you were cruising down I-95/I-295 on the southside yesterday and thought you saw a barefoot man wrestling a giant alligator in the median — nope, your eyes weren't playing tricks on you. That really happened,' the sheriff's office wrote.
'Your (Jacksonville Sheriff's Office) joined forces with .... local gator-wrangling legend, the Blue Collar Brawler, to wrangle this beast off the road and keep everyone safe. Just another totally normal day in the Sunshine State.'
Video shows the alligator was lunging with its jaws open when Dragich trapped it with a catch pole and dragged it out of the grass.
He then hopped on its back like a bronco rider, ignoring the passing traffic that roared just feet away.
The alligator left the scene in the back of a pickup, with its jaws taped shut.
The video had racked up more than 100,000 comments and reactions as of April 30, many noting his lack of shoes and that matching camouflage outfit.
'Like some kind of Reptilian Wrestling Super Hero! He just needs a cool name!' Lisa Hawkins Penzenstadler wrote on the sheriff's office Facebook page.
'In Florida when you see an old boy walk up in camo with no shoes, you know everything gonna be alright,' Dustin Nunn posted.
'Was he wearing that outfit when they called him or did he change into he 'gator wrasslin' super hero uniform when he got the call?' Noah Jones asked.
'The first time in history that I would not be mad at a traffic jam if it was because they were watching this happen,' Lindsey Jones wrote.
Dragich is a middleweight mixed martial arts fighter who was last in the ring in 2023, according to Tapology. His amateur MMA record is 2-2-0. He also leads a nonprofit called Project Savior Outdoors, which uses outdoor adventures to help veterans deal with post traumatic stress disorder.

Arrest made in 2017 Jacksonville cold case, family thanks social media posts

Eight years after a woman was found dead behind a local church, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says her alleged killer is behind bars in the Duval County jail. JSO spotlighted the arrest this week, which brings the case closer to an end. Officials say 39-year-old Rose Greene was found dead on Soutel Drive behind Master's Touch Ministry in June 2017. Percy Johnson, a local registered sex offender with sexual offenses dating back 30 years, was officially charged with Greene's murder in November 2024. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Greene's daughter, Catherine, said she searched for answers for years, even reaching out to a local Jacksonville social media influencer to spread the news about her mother's cold case. 'We didn't know who did it, so God put it in my heart to just reach out to Chelle,' Catherine said. Chelle Gman is a Jacksonville native who uses her Facebook page to highlight unsolved cases in the community. Catherine and Gman believe the local influencer's Facebook reach of over 25,000 followers may have lead to the arrest. 'A little information here… a piece there… can put together a whole puzzle and you never know who knows what until you ask,' Gman said. While Catherine says she has some closure knowing that someone is finally being held responsible, she says Johnson should have never been on the streets. Action News Jax found records dating back to 1996 of Johnson's arrests in St. Johns and Duval counties. The records show charges of sexual battery, kidnapping, and other similar offenses between 1996 and 2022. Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officials say they are working with the State Attorney's Office in this case. Johnson is pleading not guilty. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Man killed in shooting near Southside restaurant Copeland's Wednesday afternoon: JSO

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating after a man was shot and killed on the Southside Wednesday afternoon. When Action News Jax arrived at the scene outside of Copeland's restaurant Wednesday afternoon, there were more than ten JSO vehicles on scene, with the entire perimeter blocked off. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] JSO said it responded to the scene around 2 P.M., where officers found a man in his late 30s with one gunshot wound to the chest. Employees from a coffee shop next door told Action News Jax that they heard multiple gunshots while in the parking lot just before police arrived. The man was reportedly taken to a nearby hospital by fire rescue, but did not survive. JSO said Wednesday evening that its investigation revealed the man was there for a meeting of some kind. Three people of interest were detained for interviews, but it's unclear if any of them were the shooter. JSO said it was still looking for one vehicle of interest, a black four-door car that may be a Nissan. The car left the parking lot and drove southbound on Southside Boulevard. Anyone with information on the shooting or suspects involved is asked to reach out to JSO or Crime Stoppers. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter]
