South Florida counties are asked to pay millions to keep Tri-Rail running
Three South Florida counties must pay millions of dollars to keep Tri-Rail, the 73-mile commuter rail system, up and running, the executive director of Tri-Rail told leaders Friday.
The need to make up what is projected to eventually be a $90 million annual deficit comes as federal stimulus money dries up and state funding ends, the director said.
The immediate ask from Tri-Rail is $10 million per county to make up a $30 million annual deficit, said David Dech, the executive director for the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority / Tri-Rail, while he still assured leaders there was 'not an existential crisis today.'

Nox Mobility Double Vista Room Nox Mobilit Over the past decade, the resurgence of sleeper trains has been one of the most notable developments in European rail. The recent announcement of a new player in the space is a significant development. A Berlin-based startup called Nox Mobility has entered the fray, with a plan to operate European overnight sleeper trains starting in 2027. What makes theirs an audacious move is that these trains will be designed and configured as one- or two-person compartments, or 'rooms,' as Nox prefers to call them. 'Sleeping while a train gets you across Europe is a great concept. But today people have to share their cabins with strangers, beds are tight, and it's often more expensive than air travel. We want to change that and make night trains an essential part of European travel.' I covered the new breed of sleeper trains in my forthcoming book, National Geographic's 100 Train Journeys of a Lifetime: The World's Ultimate Rides (which will be published in October 2025). Offering dedicated single and double compartments is a significant advantage. So is making them affordable. Nox Mobility Single Loft Room Seat Nox Mobility Currently, most travelers on European sleeper trains – unless they book a rare single room – need to share compartments with upwards of four berths. Unless four people are traveling together, you're sharing with total strangers. Nox aims to offer a choice for single travelers and couples with its sleekly designed cabins that double as spaces for relaxed sightseeing and workspaces. 'Sleeping while a train gets you across Europe is a great concept. But today people have to share their cabins with strangers, beds are tight, and it's often more expensive than air travel. We want to change that and make night trains an essential part of European travel,' said Thibault Constant, Co-Founder of Nox, in a press statement. Constant is known on YouTube and Instagram as 'Simply Railway', with more than half a million followers and a claim to making over 400 night train trips worldwide. His cofounder is Janek Smalla, who co-launched FlixTrain and led the German ridesharing market for Bolt. In terms of cost, Nox plans to operate Europe-wide overnight trains with private rooms for one or two people, competing with the cost of a short-haul flight. The aim is to offer train fares that are competitive with air fares. Nox has announced that single cabins will be priced from 79 Euros ($92) and double cabins from 149 Euros ($173). Nox Mobility Single Loft Room Bed Nox Mobility Sleeper trains are considered to be far more sustainable than short-haul flights. Nox aims to reduce the carbon footprint of short-haul flights by offering this environmentally friendly alternative for travelers. Sleeper trains enable you to travel from city center to city center, eliminating the need for airport transfers. Passengers can choose between single and double rooms, guaranteeing privacy and comfort during their journey. On the new Nox trains, there will be three room configurations. Single and Double Loft rooms have upper beds, reachable by a ladder. They both feature separate seating and table areas. Loft rooms feature wide single and double beds, allowing you to sleep vertically to the travel direction and enjoy a loft-like view over your room and window. Double Vista rooms offer a low floor and a chest-height bed for easy access. The bed converts into two seats. In Double Vista rooms, you sleep parallel to the direction of travel, with outside views directly from your bed. The beds in all three configurations will be two meters long (78.74 inches). Nox has also announced an even more radical plan to connect more than 100 European cities with its sleeper network by 2035. $200,000 grant presented to San Joaquin County schools for learning program
( — Three schools in San Joaquin County were presented with $200,000 by San Joaquin A+ to create the Career Connected Learning Integrated Program of Study at their high schools, according to officials. Officials said the winning schools were then recognized at last Thursday and Friday's Stockton Ports Games. Lodi Unified School District and Denair Unified School District will each receive a $100,000 grant. The grants will allow for the development of a 'Career-Connected Learning' program that officials said consists of everyday classroom learning and hands-on career exploration. 'We really appreciate all the schools who applied to this opportunity and are excited to get to work with those selected to make this grant a reality for students,' shared Kai Kung, CEO of San Joaquin A+. 'At San Joaquin A+, we are focused on ensuring students can do what they love and earn what they need after they leave our public schools in the San Joaquin Valley. We hope to work with these schools to do just that in the coming years.' According to officials, Career-Connected Learning helps students make real-world connections, gain career exposure and build the critical, technical and soft skills needed for a successful future. 'We are excited for the opportunity to collaborate with San Joaquin A+ and see this grant as the next step in providing students with internship opportunities' said Breanne Aguiar, Principal of Denair High School 'This will allow us to plan and implement changes to our school curriculum at Denair High School, to ensure that students aren't just getting one-off experiences, but that their in-school learning is integrated with the career connected learning they are doing outside of the school.' Pride weekend street closures begin, here's what to expect The grant money will be provided within two years and will cover each phase during the school year. Officials said that year one is the planning year, which ranges from fall 2025 to spring 2026. The phase focuses on dual enrollment program planning and articulation agreements. The second year is the implementation year, which ranges from fall 2026 to spring 2027. According to officials, dual enrollment implementation is the focus, along with planning and pilots for work-based learning. The third year is when officials said schools are prepared for the full implementation of dual enrollment courses, along with work-based learning experiences that open the path for internships. 'This grant is about creating a continuum of learning for our students,' said Kara Backman, Senior Director of School Supports and Partnerships for San Joaquin A+. 'The more progress we can make to create great dual enrollment in our schools and align those opportunities with pathways to careers our students are interested in, the more students will be prepared when they leave our schools to navigate school and find a successful career path.' According to officials, the program can have a significant impact for low-income students, Black and Latino youth and those who are the first generation in their families to attend college. ITS Logistics June Port Rail Ramp Index: Trans-Shipment Delays in Asia Signal Impending US Import Surge, Spurring Early Retail Peak
-- Backlogged empty containers and surging inbound freight are set to converge, stressing inland supply chain operations. -- ITS Logistics June Port Rail Ramp Index RENO, Nev., June 12, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ITS Logistics today released the June forecast for the ITS Logistics US Port/Rail Ramp Freight Index. This month, the index reveals increased volumes making their way to North America with reports of trans-shipment delays in Asia, most notably in Singapore. The change signals rising East-to-West freight volumes, while outside of the terminals, empty termination problems persist, especially in Los Angeles/Long Beach. Furthermore, rail gateways for inland point intermodal (IPI) legs of ocean freight will become more congested rapidly as import surges make their way inland. 'Most ports are running at 60 to 75% capacity, suggesting port operations and vessel congestion should operate efficiently,' said Paul Brashier, Vice President of Global Supply Chain for ITS Logistics. 'However, with temporary tariff relief boosting Chinese import volumes in the second half of the retail season, there are growing concerns about whether receiving capacity can effectively absorb these volumes.' Mid-summer typically marks the onset of back-to-school shipping activity, with fall and winter holiday merchandise still in production or on water. However, the April suspension of the Trump administration's tariffs on Chinese imports prompted many retailers to accelerate orders on inventory for the second half of the year—prompting another frontloading episode that has sent container rates surging even into early June. Last Friday, the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) reported a week-over-week increase of nearly 31% across all documented markets. West Coast-bound spot rates rose 58% to $6,243 per 40-foot equivalent unit (FEU), while East Coast rates increased 46% to $5,172 per container. While the rebound in activity is a welcome relief after a 13.4% drop in import volume between April and May, the Global Port Tracker's June forecast of 2.01 million TEUs still represents a 6.2% year-over-year drop in volume—signaling shippers' ongoing hesitancy in the face of shifting global politics and economic uncertainty. On June 11 President Trump announced a forthcoming trade agreement with China, referencing updated tariff rates of 55% on Chinese imports and 10% on United States exports. Until a final agreement is announced, there is still uncertainty in how this will affect the global supply chain for the remainder of 2025. Outside of the terminal gates, ongoing challenges with empty container termination are placing pressure on domestic supply chain operations—particularly in Southern California. Dwell times remain elevated due to restricted return windows, limited depot availability, and more stringent return policies from ocean carriers. Many carriers have reinstated labor-intensive termination procedures not seen since the post-COVID era, while simultaneously increasing the threshold for detention-free time exemptions. These changes introduce greater administrative complexity for drayage providers and expose shippers to additional per diem or detention charges if they do not carefully review ocean contracts. The surplus of empty containers—already straining depot space and chassis capacity—is now set to converge with a surge of frontloaded import volume from China, significantly amplifying congestion risks at ports and rail ramps. As grounded empties linger and imports move inland, shippers are likely to encounter reduced equipment availability, increased dwell times, and slower turnarounds. IPI-connected gateways should be of particular note to shippers, as summer holidays like the Fourth of July are marked by increased levels of cargo theft. Altogether, these conditions create a volatile inland environment for this unconventional peak season. 'With container termination challenges compounding port and depot congestion—and a wave of frontloaded imports moving rapidly inland—any inefficiencies could drive significant cost increases through detention costs, delays, and fraud,' Brashier advised. 'To maintain control over delivery timelines and minimize risk, shippers should consider leveraging transload, cross-dock, and one-way trucking options that offer more flexibility and security for their freight as we navigate the next few weeks.'
