Ronaldo declares ‘Al Nassr forever' after signing a two-year deal to stay in Saudi Arabia

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates after winning the Nations League soccer championship at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, Sunday, June 8, 2025. (AP Photo/Michael Probst) With the words 'Al Nassr forever' Cristiano Ronaldo ended uncertainty about his future and signed a two-year contract extension with the Saudi Arabian club on Thursday. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner's latest deal means he will play on until at least the age of 42 and gives him the chance to add to his record-breaking career. 'A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together,' Ronaldo said in a social media post along with a picture of him holding up a shirt that said 'Ronaldo 2027.' The contract sees Ronaldo extend his time in Saudi Arabia, having joined Al Nassr at the end of 2022 in one of the most shocking transfers in soccer history after leaving Manchester United. The deal was reportedly worth up to $200 million a year and led to a slew of top players, including Neymar and Karim Benzema, leaving Europe for the oil-rich kingdom. With his contract due to expire, the 40-year-old Ronaldo sparked uncertainty at the end of the Saudi season last month when he said the 'chapter is over.' But he ended speculation Thursday, saying 'Al Nassr forever' in the club's announcement. The deal is evidence the former Real Madrid forward wants to achieve more. The move to a less-challenging league has also not hindered his standing with his national team. The five-time Champions League winner has won 28 major trophies with club and country and just helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League title. He is the all-time leading scorer in the Champions League with 141 goals. The World Cup is the only major honor missing from his resume and he may get one last chance to lift soccer's grandest prize at next year's tournament. Despite helping to raise the profile of Saudi Arabian soccer and scoring 77 goals in 74 league appearances, Ronaldo has found trophies hard to come by at Al Nassr. His one so far was the Arab Club Champions Cup in 2023. He is yet to win the Saudi Pro League in three attempts. Still, his latest deal was hailed by the club, which posted a video of him walking on a beach with the caption 'The Story continues..' along with emojis of a goat and a gold heart. Ronaldo is considered by many to be soccer's greatest of all time, a term often abbreviated as 'GOAT.' He and Lionel Messi have had a years-long rivalry as the two finest players of their generation, with the duel reaching its peak when they played for Madrid and Barcelona, respectively. The intensity of the rivalry has diminished in recent years as both players have entered the latter stages of their careers and are playing in less heralded leagues, with Messi joining MLS team Inter Miami in 2023. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer: James Robson, The Associated Press

It's still wait and see whether B.C. Lions will activate Nathan Rourke Saturday

The B.C. Lions remain in a holding pattern with Nathan Rourke. Article content Lions head coach Buck Pierce continued to list his starting quarterback's status as day-to-day after practice at their Surrey headquarters on Wednesday. Rourke (oblique) split reps with Jeremiah Masoli under centre and he did make some deeper throws as the session wore on. Article content Article content The Lions (1-2) visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-0) on Saturday at 4 p.m. Rourke dressed but did not play in a 27-14 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at B.C. Place on Saturday. He was injured in a 34-20 loss at Winnipeg on June 12. Article content 'We're going to continue to evaluate every chance we get,' Pierce said Wednesday. 'You want your quarterback to be healthy and you want him to be able to play. If he feels and we feel confident in the decision, he wants to be on the field. We look at the big picture. We also know the type of guy he is. If he's healthy enough to go, we'll make that decision closer to the game.' Article content Masoli, 36, is in his 12th CFL season after signing on with the Lions as a free agent in February. He made three starts last year with the Ottawa Redblacks, and passed for 1,149 yards, with five touchdowns and seven interceptions, on the season. That's the most he had played since 2021. He's persevered through a broken leg in 2022 — resulting from a dirty hit from Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive lineman Garrett Marino — and a ruptured Achilles in 2023. Article content Masoli was 25-for-44 for 281 yards last week against the Blue Bombers, with one touchdown and two interceptions. Article content 'They're both feeling good about the game plan this week and where we are and seeing things the same way,' Pierce said of Masoli and third stringer Chase Brice. 'The progress for Jeremiah is just about reps. It's just like every other quarterback, right? It's continuing to get reps, continuing to see the pictures and learning what we want.' Article content Article content This, of course, is very familiar territory for Pierce, who was a CFL quarterback for nine seasons, including six of those with the Lions. Article content Article content 'Everybody's different, but I can always give a perspective coming from that position,' Pierce said. 'I'm here as a resource in any way I can be. I think most quarterbacks, and especially the guys we have here, understand those type of things. My voice and my experience is here for them if they need. I've always been a guy that would communicate. It's a 'hey, this is how I learned it — how do you see it?' type of thing.' Article content Through three weeks, Saskatchewan has the best pass rush grade (86.9) in the CFL, according to analytics company Pro Football Focus. They're also have 43 plays with pressure, which is tied for second in the league, one behind the Calgary Stampeders. Article content They do have their own quarterback question as well, though. Veteran Trevor Harris missed his second straight day of practice Wednesday with what the team tagged as a 'head/illness' injury designation. The Regina Leader-Post is reporting that Saskatchewan head coach Corey Mace will determine Harris' status for Saturday at a closed practice Thursday. Article content
