Box Office: Sinners stuns with USD 15.4M on 5th weekend, hits USD 240M to surpass The Exorcist in all-time horror ranking
Ryan Coogler's Sinners is proving to be one of 2025's most unstoppable box office juggernauts. The supernatural horror musical has now surpassed The Exorcist (USD 233 million) to become the fourth highest-grossing scary film of all time at the US box office. In its fifth weekend, Sinners earned a remarkable USD 15.4 million, dropping only 30.3 percent from the previous weekend — an exceptional hold for any genre, let alone horror.
The film's fifth-frame performance marks the second-biggest fifth weekend ever for an R-rated movie, edging out the likes of Oppenheimer (USD 10.7 million) and The Passion of the Christ (USD 12.9 million), with only Deadpool & Wolverine (USD 18.3 million) ahead.
Sinners also ranks fifth-highest fifth-weekend gross for any April release, trailing major blockbusters such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame, and The Jungle Book.
It has now amassed USD 240.8 million domestically and USD 316.8 million globally, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year so far. Industry projections suggest the film could reach USD 250 million in the US by next weekend, with a final domestic haul likely crossing USD 280 million.
Directed, written, and produced by Coogler, Sinners is set in the 1930s Mississippi Delta. It stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as criminal twin brothers who return to their hometown only to face a sinister supernatural force. The film also features Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.
Coogler began developing the project under his banner, Proximity Media, in early 2024. After a heated bidding war, Warner Bros. Pictures secured distribution rights, and filming took place between April and July 2024. Composer Ludwig Göransson, a longtime Coogler collaborator, served as EP and composed the film's hauntingly immersive score.
Released on April 18, Sinners has been met with widespread critical acclaim, praised for its bold genre-blending, Jordan's standout performance, and, of course, Coogler's directorial vision. With its historic box office showing, Sinners not only redefines horror storytelling but also significantly reclaims theatrical presence for the genre.

Box Office: Housefull 5 registers the 5th best advances for a Bollywood film in New Zealand; Kiwis remain loyal to their beloved comedy franchise
The much-anticipated Housefull 5 starring Akshay Kumar in the lead is gearing up for a good start at the global box office, with its advance bookings painting an encouraging picture, particularly in New Zealand. The fifth installment of the much-loved franchise has recorded a stellar USD 28,000 in gross advance bookings for its opening day in New Zealand. It has secured its place as the fifth-highest opener for a Bollywood film in the market. This figure propels Housefull 5 ahead of heavyweights like Tiger 3 (Saturday), Fighter (Thursday), and Dunki (Thursday), trailing only behind juggernauts such as Pathaan (Wednesday), Animal (Friday), Jawan (Thursday), and Padmaavat (Friday). This achievement is a testament to the franchise's longevity. The Housefull series has consistently struck a chord with New Zealand audiences. Its strong advance performance in New Zealand should come as no surprise, given that previous installments have also ranked among the top 10 Bollywood openers in the market during their respective release periods. Housefull 2 was the biggest Bollywood opener, Housefull 3 was the 6th biggest and Housefull 4 was the 3rd biggest. The franchise's signature mix of comedy, chaos, and chartbuster music continues to resonate with the Kiwis. Beyond New Zealand, the film is showing promising traction in other international markets. In Australia, advance bookings for the opening day have reached an impressive USD 67,000. The UAE, another key territory for Bollywood releases, is also witnessing solid momentum, with Vox Cinemas projected to sell approximately 10,000 tickets across its chain for the opening day. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, advance bookings are trending toward a healthy 15,000 euros. These figures collectively point to a strong international opening for Housefull 5, with early estimates projecting a weekend in the range of USD 3.5 to 3.75 million. Akshay Kumar's Good Newwz may likely remain on top of this list because it had much better bookings than the upcoming release in a big traditional market like US-Canada. Coming to the movie's India bookings, Housefull 5 has sold a little over 80,000 tickets in the top national chains as at 10pm on the day before release and it should end in the vicinity of 90,000 tickets if the current trend holds up for the next couple of hours.

Housefull 5 Worldwide Screen Count: Akshay Kumar starrer set to release on 7000 screens in 85 countries
The much-anticipated Housefull 5 is gearing up to hit theaters tomorrow, June 6, 2025, with a staggering 7,000 plus screens worldwide. It is Akshay Kumar 's widest release as a lead hero. The killer-comedy directed by Tarun Mansukhani and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, will roll out across 5,000 screens in India and 2,000 screens internationally. The film releases in 85+ countries internationally, at 1,300 different locations. While Akshay's widest release to date remains 2.0, where he played a pivotal supporting role alongside Rajinikanth, Housefull 5 marks a new milestone for the actor in a leading role. With exhibitors very much on board for this laugh riot and advance bookings picking up well on the final day, all eyes are on this fifth installment to deliver to the franchise standards of unadulterated fun and comedy. The makers of Housefull 5 have gone all out to ensure a grand release for their film. The decision to opt for such a massive screen count reflects their confidence in the film's appeal, magnified further by a star-studded ensemble that also features Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Sonam Bajwa among others. The advance bookings of the comic caper in India began on a decent note and there is a noticeable uptick in ticket sales today. If this momentum continues, an opening day figure of Rs 20 crore net will be breached. Internationally, Housefull 5 is making waves, though the bookings haven't quite matched the initial buzz. Still, the film is poised for a good performance with advance bookings suggesting a gross of USD 3.5 million over its three-day opening weekend. Markets like the UAE, UK, and Australia, New Zealand and Fiji are expected to contribute significantly to this total. The stakes are high for Housefull 5. The comedy-ensemble genre, known for its high budgets due to the star-studded cast and the high production value, relies heavily on strong box office returns to justify the investments. The Housefull series hasn't had a theatrical miss so far. However, a misstep in the post-pandemic setting could make producers wary of backing similar projects. Industry insiders are watching closely, as the film's performance could change their decision on green-lighting certain films for the good or for the worse. Will Housefull 5 deliver the laughs and the box office collections? We shall know that soon. Have you booked your tickets for Housefull 5 yet? If yes, which version have you chosen to watch? A or B?

IU defamation case: Woman accused of slander faces additional 3 million KRW fine for repeated offence
In a recent court ruling, a woman in her 40s was held accountable for her actions against IU, which included posting defamatory comments about her. While presenting the verdict, the court took into consideration the woman's prior conviction for a similar offense against the singer in 2022. As a result, the offender was ordered to pay a hefty fine. The latest development in the case was reported by K-media outlet The Korea Herald on June 5. IU's second-time offender slapped with 3 million KRW fine The Seoul Central District Court found the defendant, referred to as Kim, guilty of the crime of slander and ordered her to pay a fine of 3 million KRW (2,200 USD). The charges against Kim stemmed from her alleged posting of s*xually offensive comments about IU, and accusing that IU's agency, Edam Entertainment, bribed judges to rule in favour of them in the previous case. Kim however, claimed that she did not mention any names in the concerned comments, and argued that they were too vague to be linked to IU and did not damage her reputation. However, the court ruled against her, taking into account her similar previous offence three years ago. The court offered IU's defamor leniency The Seoul Court issued a lenient sentence for Kim due to her being already indicted with similar charges and facing legal consequences for the same. Kim received the same fine for her current offense as she did for her previous offense against IU in 2022. As for IU's side, they revealed that the When Life Gives You Tangerines actress did not forgive her offender and thus, the court hearing proceeded as scheduled. Kim's previous offence against IU Kim's previous online attack against IU was in April 2022, and it involved posting derogatory comments about her singing and fashion sense. Despite Kim's claim that her comments were merely a reflection of her personal taste and that her language skills were limited due to a mental health issue, the court found her guilty and imposed a fine of 3 million KRW in December 2023. From then till date, Edam Entertainment has been vigorously taking legal action against individuals who post malicious comments about IU. By November, the agency had initiated criminal proceedings against 180 individuals.
