Box Office: Ryan Coogler's Sinners defies odds with USD 8.8M sixth weekend, US total crosses 250 million
Ryan Coogler's supernatural horror film Sinners continued its impressive box office run during the competitive Memorial Day weekend, showing remarkable resilience in its sixth frame of release. Despite a significant reduction of 886 theaters, the film pulled in a strong USD 8.8 million over the three-day weekend, marking just a 41.8 percent drop from the previous Fri-Sun stretch. This performance places Sinners among the top performers for a sixth weekend in several categories. It posted the third-biggest six three-day weekends ever for R-rated films, surpassing Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, which earned USD 8.2 million in its sixth weekend. Only The Passion of the Christ (USD 10.6 million) and Deadpool & Wolverine (USD 15.5 million) rank higher in this category. For April releases, Sinners holds the fourth-biggest sixth weekend, trailing behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie (USD 12.6 million), The Jungle Book (USD 10.9 million), and Avengers: Infinity War (USD 10.5 million), but ahead of Avengers: Endgame (USD 8 million). Since its release on April 18 by Warner Bros. Pictures, Sinners has amassed a cumulative USD 256.6 million domestically, firmly securing its position as a blockbuster. Globally, the film has grossed USD 339 million, making it the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2025 so far. Written, produced, and directed by Coogler, Sinners follows criminal twin brothers Smoke and Stack — both played by Michael B. Jordan — in the 1930s, who return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta in hopes of a chance at redemption. They, however, are hit by the biggest plot twist of their lives when they encounter a malevolent spirit awaiting them. The film also stars Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Hailee Steinfeld, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo. Coogler developed the project through his production company, Proximity Media, starting in January 2024, with Jordan, his longtime collaborator, joining the project shortly thereafter. Following an intense bidding war, Warner Bros. Pictures secured distribution rights in February 2024. Principal photography took place between April and July of the same year, with longtime collaborator Ludwig Göransson composing the score and serving as executive producer. Looking ahead, Sinners is conservatively projected to reach around USD 280 million domestically, though its future performance will depend on the impact of further theater drops. Sinners will also move to digital on June 3, meaning it has one more weekend to entertain the masses.

Box Office: Sinners crushes records with USD 1.8M 5th Wednesday, eyes USD 280M plus domestic mark amid delayed digital release
Ryan Coogler's supernatural horror epic Sinners continues its powerful theatrical run, pulling in a staggering USD 1.8 million on its fifth Wednesday, marking the second biggest fifth Wednesday ever for an R-rated film at the domestic box office. The Michael B. Jordan starrer now stands at a USD 246.4 million U.S. cume and is projected to cross the USD 250 million mark as early as Friday in the States. The fifth-week midweek performance places Sinners just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie (USD 2M) as the second-biggest fifth Wednesday ever for an April release, a remarkable feat considering the film's genre and rating. Even more impressive is the fact that it tops previous R-rated benchmarks set by Oppenheimer (USD 1.3M), The Passion of the Christ (USD 1.6M), and Deadpool & Wolverine (USD 1.6M). The tight 20.8 percent drop from the previous Wednesday showcases the film's strong legs, bolstered by stellar word of mouth and limited competition before the Memorial Day weekend. The decision to postpone the film's digital release to June 3 has given it added presence in theaters, where it recently wrapped up its IMAX run. Directed, produced, and written by Coogler, Sinners is set in 1932 Mississippi and follows twin criminal brothers, Smoke and Stack — both portrayed by Jordan — who return to their hometown to start new lives but confront an ancient evil force instead. The ensemble cast includes Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, and Jayme Lawson. Ludwig Göransson, a frequent Coogler collaborator, composed the score and also served as an executive producer. Developed by Coogler's Proximity Media, the film was picked up by Warner Bros. Pictures after a heated bidding war. Shot from April to July 2024, Sinners debuted stateside on April 18 to widespread critical acclaim and has since grossed USD 321 million worldwide, making it the sixth-highest-grossing film of the year globally. With a current trajectory pointing to a USD 280 million domestic finish, and possibly more depending on theater retention and continued audience interest. Sinners is not only Coogler's latest success but also one of the most lucrative original horror films in recent memory.

Incredible abandoned European town still 'so pretty' but locals cannot return
This southern Italian village was completely abandoned after landslides and earthquakes forced residents to leave, but the crumbling town is increasingly intriguing to travellers As ghost towns go, this one leans more stunning than spooky. Its dramatic setting on a hill in southern Italy gives this abandoned medieval town a distinct appeal for travellers, though it became too dangerous for former residents to remain. Craco is surely one of the most picturesque ghost towns in Europe, if not in the world. It sits on a clifftop between the valleys of the Agri and Salandrella-Cavone rivers. Before its ruin, the village had a prosperous past supposedly linked to the Templars. Craco was abandoned somewhat recently after an unfortunate series of natural disasters forced residents to pick up and move on. Almost all of the town's less than 2,000 inhabitants were moved to a settlement in a nearby valley after a landslide in 1963 - the last in a series of landslides that began at the end of the 19th century. Some contend that the landslides leading up to the 1963 disaster were caused by faulty pipework and excavations in the decades prior. Even the few inhabitants who chose to remain after the landslides were forced to leave when the village was devastated in 1972 by a flood. And when earthquakes hit the town in 1980, the remaining stragglers moved on, leaving it totally abandoned. Since then, Craco has remained relatively untouched and fuelled many mysterious legends. The town's fame became international when it was used as a location for the 2008 James Bond film James Bond, Quantum of Solace, and it continues to attract curious travellers. Craco has served as a filming location for many notable works, in fact. It was also chosen as the location for Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" and Francesco Rosi's "Cristo si è fermato a Eboli". Today, Craco is a collection of ruins though they highlight the rich ancient history of the area. Travellers will come upon ancient churches, such as the Mother Church of San Nicola and the Madonna della Stella church, and noble palaces, from palazzo Carbone to palazzo Grossi. The village has increasingly grown into disrepair as weekends sprout within the churches and balconies and weather-damaged properties continue to rust and disintegrate. That said, Craco has been included on a list of sites that are priorities of the World Monuments Fund. The town can only now be visited as part of guided tours, due to the instability of the buildings. Visitors are required to wear hard hats for their safety. Italy is home to quite a few abandoned towns, though Craco is arguably the most beautiful. Fossa is another Italian village that was left abandoned after natural disasters cause significant damage. When Matt Nadin travelled to Italy to explore the village of Fossa in the L'Aquila region of the country, he found many items had been left behind by families, including a mummified cat. Fossa had been inhabited for around 900 years until an earthquake struck in 2009. The quake caused severe damage to the village's buildings and left 308 people dead. Today the empty streets and abandoned buildings give the village the feeling of a ghost town. Another abandoned town that is gaining attention for the morbidly curious is Varosha. The once-thriving resort town was left abandoned after the Turkish army invaded the northern region of Cyprus on July 20, 1974. While the town remained closed to visitors for many years, in October 2020, a decision was made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the then prime minister of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, to reopen the area to tourists. More than 1.8 million tourists have visited the ghost town in the last four years - according to statistics released in 2024.

Mel Gibson reveals the reason behind Lethal Weapon 5 delay
The fifth 'Lethal Weapon' movie has been stuck in development hell because "the studios are having a lot of problems", Mel Gibson has said. The 69-year-old actor is set to reprise his role as LA police officer Martin Riggs as well as direct the long-awaited sequel, though Gibson has revealed Warner Bros. has been facing internal issues that have slowed development down - despite the next 'Lethal Weapon' having "a really good screenplay". Speaking to Screen Rant, he said: "For some reason, the studios are having a lot of problems. I don't know what the deal is. 'I'm not sure what the problem is, but it is a really good screenplay." 'The Passion of the Christ' director teased that the fifth 'Lethal Weapon' movie was the best entry in the series, and described it as "a lot of fun" and "really emotional". He said: "I sat down with a writer and we did two or three drafts of screenplays and it came out pretty good. In fact, I think it's the best of all of them. It's a lot of fun and got really emotional." Gibson has starred opposite Danny Glover in the 'Lethal Weapon' franchise since its debut in 1987, with the late Richard Donner helming the series behind the camera until the latest entry 'Lethal Weapon 4' in 1998. However, since Donner's passing in 2021 at the age of 91, the Oscar-winning filmmaker has picked up directing duties for the fifth 'Lethal Weapon'. The 'Mad Max' star said during an appearance on the 'Inspire Me' podcast: "I'm going to direct the fifth film in the Lethal Weapon series. "Richard Donner, who did the other four, sadly passed away and he was a good friend. He kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on that one so it'll be an honour for me to do that." Gibson and the creative team for the fifth 'Lethal Weapon' movie have been building on a script written by the late Donner. He said: "We've used what was there and we kept kind of poking at it and working at it. I'm pretty happy with it. It's good, I had a lot of fun doing it. "It's funny, but it's pretty serious too. It tackles a couple of hard issues. I'm looking forward to it." As well as Gibson's Martin Riggs, Glover's Roger Murtaugh is also confirmed to be returning for the fifth 'Lethal Weapon'. Gibson previously revealed that changes behind the scenes at Warner Bros. had caused delays on the next 'Lethal Weapon', and said at the time he hoped the movie would start shooting at the beginning of 2025 - though the flick is yet to enter production. The 'Braveheart' actor explained: "The only delay is now with all the shake-up at Warners, with Discovery coming in and the new boss, and they chop everyone else up and throw them away and get new people. "It always takes time for these companies to regroup, so that's been a delay, but I'm pretty confident we'll get this one up on its feet, probably shoot it in the first quarter of the New Year."

Box Office: Sinners stuns with USD 15.4M on 5th weekend, hits USD 240M to surpass The Exorcist in all-time horror ranking
Ryan Coogler's Sinners is proving to be one of 2025's most unstoppable box office juggernauts. The supernatural horror musical has now surpassed The Exorcist (USD 233 million) to become the fourth highest-grossing scary film of all time at the US box office. In its fifth weekend, Sinners earned a remarkable USD 15.4 million, dropping only 30.3 percent from the previous weekend — an exceptional hold for any genre, let alone horror. The film's fifth-frame performance marks the second-biggest fifth weekend ever for an R-rated movie, edging out the likes of Oppenheimer (USD 10.7 million) and The Passion of the Christ (USD 12.9 million), with only Deadpool & Wolverine (USD 18.3 million) ahead. Sinners also ranks fifth-highest fifth-weekend gross for any April release, trailing major blockbusters such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame, and The Jungle Book. It has now amassed USD 240.8 million domestically and USD 316.8 million globally, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year so far. Industry projections suggest the film could reach USD 250 million in the US by next weekend, with a final domestic haul likely crossing USD 280 million. Directed, written, and produced by Coogler, Sinners is set in the 1930s Mississippi Delta. It stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as criminal twin brothers who return to their hometown only to face a sinister supernatural force. The film also features Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo. Coogler began developing the project under his banner, Proximity Media, in early 2024. After a heated bidding war, Warner Bros. Pictures secured distribution rights, and filming took place between April and July 2024. Composer Ludwig Göransson, a longtime Coogler collaborator, served as EP and composed the film's hauntingly immersive score. Released on April 18, Sinners has been met with widespread critical acclaim, praised for its bold genre-blending, Jordan's standout performance, and, of course, Coogler's directorial vision. With its historic box office showing, Sinners not only redefines horror storytelling but also significantly reclaims theatrical presence for the genre.
