It also earned nominations at the Oscars for best make-up, cinematography and original score.
Starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene, the original movie took viewers through the final twelve hours leading up to Jesus's crucifixion.
As for the sequel, Gibson described it as an "acid trip", hinting on the Joe Rogan podcast, that it will be an ambitious narrative filled with cosmic elements.

'Last year this time my dreams were shattered': Chidimma looks back on Miss SA exit
Former Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina has reflected on her journey at the pageant, a year after her withdrawal. The 24-year-old reigning Miss Universe Africa and Oceania withdrew from the competition after controversy surrounding her nationality. She moved on to compete for Miss Universe Nigeria, where she won. In an Instagram story, Adetshina shared a video from last year, dated August 12, four days after she stepped down, captioned: 'Last year, on this day, my dream was shattered in front of my eyes, but I'm grateful for this journey.' The beauty queen, who was born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother who allegedly stole someone's identity, faced intense scrutiny and online attacks, with many questioning her identity. The department of home affairs found prima facie evidence suggesting fraud and identity theft may have been committed by Adetshina's mother when she obtained her South African citizenship in 2001. Meanwhile, Adetshina sparked controversy recently after it was reported she was back in South Africa. Operation Dudula confirmed she is in Cape Town and called for her deportation. 'This goes against South African immigration laws, which clearly state anyone found to have used another person's identity — directly or indirectly — is liable for deportation,' Operation Dudula said. It suggested home affairs was misleading the public with 'fake' removals. 'Instead of ensuring our laws are upheld, home affairs appears to be conducting fake deportations that give the public a false sense of action. Many of these so-called 'removals' seem to be temporary arrests followed by quiet releases.'

Cristiano Ronaldo and his long-time girlfriend Georgina Rodríguez shared the joyful news of their engagement on social media. Image: Instagram Cristiano Ronaldo finally got the 'click'! Congratulations are in order for the Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and his long-time girlfriend, Georgina Rodríguez, who recently announced their engagement. Taking to Instagram on Monday, August 11, the Argentine-Spanish model shared the exciting news of their engagement as she showed off the giant diamond ring on her wedding finger, with Ronaldo's hand in the frame. The 31-year-old captioned her post: 'Yes, I do. In this and in all my lives.' The couple have been together for nine years and met in 2016 when the model was still working at a Gucci store in Madrid. They share two children out of the five kids the award-winning footballer has. The public has closely followed the couple's evolving love story, with much discussion surrounding their relationship and the swiftness of their engagement. They have had mounting pressure from not only the public, but also friends who have always asked when Ronaldo will pop the question since they have been together for such a long time. The model, who starred in her own Netflix reality show 'I Am Georgina' three years ago, had previously commented on engagement rumours, stating on the show that her friends 'were always joking about the wedding.' 'Since Jennifer Lopez's song 'The Ring Or When' came out, they started singing it to me. And well, this is not up to me,' she said. Responding to the model's question, Ronaldo shared that they should wait for the 'click' to get married; however, he is certain that they will get married. 'I always tell her, 'When we get that click.' Like everything with our life, and she knows what I'm talking about,' he said. The footballer also added that the engagement or wedding could happen anytime. 'It could be in a year, or it could be in six months, or it could be in a month. I'm 1,000% sure that it'll happen,' he said. Fans and friends flooded the comment section to congratulate the couple on their engagement news. 'Just breathtaking! Congratulations,' @jenafrumes commented.
