Mitch Owen equals Ricky Ponting and David Warner with historic feat on Aussie debut
Owen was named man of the match in his first game in the national colours of Australia, with the 23-year-old belting six sixes in his eye-catching 50 (off 27 balls) in Kingston. Owen and Cameron Green combined for a match-defining 80-run stand for the Aussies, who chased down the Windies' 8-189 with seven balls to spare after slumping to 4-78 in the ninth over.
The stunning fifth-wicket stand from Owen and Green changed the complexion of the run chase after Australia's top order fell cheaply. Skipper Mitch Marsh (24 from 17), Josh Inglis (18 from 8), Glenn Maxwell (11 from 10) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (2 from 7) were all dismissed inside nine overs to leave the Windies in the driving seat after Roston Chase (60 from 32) and captain Shai Hope (55 from 39) helped the hosts set a competitive total.

But Owen - who earnt his national call-up after a record-equalling 39-ball century for the Hurricanes in last January's BBL final - showed exactly why he's been earmarked as a star of the future. The Tassie all-rounder got off the mark with a big six over mid-off to open his account for Australia in style.
And in combination with Green - who hit five sixes in his own half century (51 off 26) - the pair blasted 80 runs in less than six overs to change the course of the game. They took the total to 4-158 in the 15th over before Green was caught out the very next ball after bringing up his 50.
Owen kept up the assault and brought up his historic half century with another big six but was also caught out off the next ball when he skied one to mid-on. The damage had largely been done though, as Owen emulated Aussie greats Ponting and Warner as the only men to score half centuries on their T20 debuts for Australia.

Aussies survive late scare to clinch three-wicket win
Despite the batting heroics of Owen and Green, it was a tense finish for Australia, who required just seven runs from 13 balls left when Sean Abbott was dropped on the boundary. It would have left the Aussies eight wickets down and facing an even more nervous chase but the massive let-off gave the visitors breathing space and they were able to wrap up the three-wicket victory.

Paceman Ben Dwarshuis was the pick of the bowlers for Australia after claiming a career-best 4-36 that featured three wickets in four balls. Chase and Windies skipper Hope led the way with the bat after notching half centuries for the home side, while Shimorn Hetmyer chipped in with a vital late 39 from 18.
Dwarshuis and spinner Cooper Connolly (1-24 from two overs) were the only two Aussies to pick up wickets inside the first 15 overs but the tourists rallied with 6-37 in the last five overs. Dwarshuis set up a hat-trick after grabbing back-to-back wickets in the penultimate over of the innings, which was his fourth and final over.
Jason Holder successfully defended the West Australian's hat-trick ball but caught on the boundary the very next ball to hand the Aussie his career-best figures. The series continues on Wednesday in Kingston before three games in St Kitts on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday (all times AEDT).

Broncos could lose another player as 'formal' offers expected from rival NRL clubs
Gehamat Shibasaki could be the latest player to fall victim to the salary cap squeeze at the Brisbane Broncos, with the manager of the Maroons Origin winner alluding to his potential exit. Shibasaki has been a fairytale story this year in Brisbane, where he started off the season on a train-and-trial deal but impressed coach Michael Maguire enough to force his way into the Broncos' starting side. The journeyman has been a revelation in the centres for Brisbane in 2025 and earnt himself a shock call-up for Queensland in the Origin series decider, playing a decisive role for Billy Slater's side as they claimed the shield. But Shibasaki's current deal with Brisbane only runs until the end of next season, meaning he will be free to negotiate with rivals clubs from November 1, unless a new deal is agreed before then. Complicating the situation is the delicate salary cap situation at the Broncos, who have a number of stars tied down to big-money deals and have recently extended several other players. The salary cap squeeze has already seen Selywn Cobbo forced to leave for the Dolphins next season and hooker Cory Paix could be pushed out too, following reports Brisbane are close to tying down forwards Kobe Hetherington and Corey Jensen to new multi-year deals. Maguire's side recently locked down captain Adam Reynolds, centre Kotoni Staggs and emerging hooker Blake Mozer after the trio signed contract extensions. And the club also has a large chunk of its cap tied up in lucrative deals for superstars Reece Walsh, Payne Haas, Patrick Carrigan, Ezra Mam and veteran Ben Hunt. Gehamat Shibasaki expected to field offers from rival clubs It's understood Brisbane are keen to keep Shibasaki on their books after his incredible season in 2025. But the Origin centre's manager Wade Rushton told that he is yet to be offered a new deal and admits they expect to be inundated with offers for the 27-year-old when he becomes a free agent on November 1. "Gehamat loves the Broncos after the season he has had and is contracted to them for next season," Rushton told WWOS. "But they haven't been able to make him an offer beyond that and so on November 1, I'm expecting quite a few clubs to show formal interest. He's had a fantastic year and is a great story - and he will keep working hard on his game. Shibasaki has scored 12 tries in 16 games in his breakout season with the Broncos in 2025, having previously failed to crack into the top grade and moving away for a stint in Japanese rugby. He's also among the NRL's leading centres in terms of line breaks, tackle busts and average run metres per game, making it easy to see why there would be so much interest from rival clubs chasing a quality outside back. Fans call out 'laughable' rule as Origin player tossing up Aussie defect ahead of Ashes
Dolphins fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is reportedly considering switching allegiances and playing for Samoa in the Pacific Championships this year, which would be a huge blow for incoming coach Kevin Walters ahead of the historic Ashes tour. Tabuai-Fidow was one of the stars of State of Origin Game 3 having filled in at fullback and helped Queensland win the decider in Sydney. Tabuai-Fidow would be close to an automatic selection for incoming coach Walters with the Dolphins star able to play in the centres, fullback and wing for his side. But just like Payne Haas and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Tabuai-Fidow is weighing-up whether to play for Samoa going forward, according to . 'The Hammer' played for Samoa in the 2022 World Cup, but was hampered with injury and only featured in one game. He has represented Australia six times since then having won the Pacific Championship last year in a stacked side. Although it appears he is weighing-up whether to go back and represent Samoa, which he is eligible to do through family heritage. And this hands Walters a new issue as incoming coach. The NRL great is expected to be handed the Kangaroos coaching role any day now. Walters appears to have got the job over Cameron Smith and other candidates, which will see him take over his first head coaching role since leaving the Broncos at the end of 2024. Walters will be looking to help lead Australia to victory over England in the first Ashes series since 2003. However, his first job as coach could be to persuade the likes of Tabuai-Fidow, Haas and Fa'asuamaleaui from changing allegiances. Samoa lost 3-0 to England last year in their international series, but boast an extremely strong side. Jarome Luai, Stephen Crichton, Brian To'o, Terrell May and Blaize Talagi already make up the squad in a side that is growing in strength. But Walters would like to keep Tabuai-Fidow in the side who would be in contention to play fullback, or revert to his previous role in the centres, if available for selection. Regardless, Walters is now facing a new task as incoming coach. And the new rule has raised issues. Rugby League fans divided over international rules Samoa is not considered a tier-one nation so if Tabuai-Fidow, Haas and Fa'asuamaleaui were to make the switch, they would still be able to continue playing Origin for their respective states. And fans have become increasingly confused and frustrated with reports of players switching. Many feel the players should only be able to play for one country and not be able to switch after making their debut. However, the argument is State of Origin and the international game is strengthened with as many players getting involved as possible. Samoa will continue to grow in strength and the game will grow if more superstars opt to represent the country. The Kangaroos will play a three-match Ashes series for the first time since 2003, with the first Test against England getting underway at London's Wembley Stadium on October 25. NRL legend Brad Fittler was considered a favourite for the role, but withdrew from the race due to his media commitments with Channel Nine. The ARLC has been on the lookout for someone to replace Mal Meninga as Kangaroos coach, since the World Cup-winning mentor stepped down to join expansion side the Perth Bears, who enter the NRL in 2027. But after the Commission voted to uphold the ban on club coaches being able to take the role and Fittler pulled out of the running, it was essentially a two-horse race between Smith and Walters to be handed the reins for Australia's Ashes campaign. Detroit Tigers prospect Troy Melton to start Wednesday vs Pirates for MLB debut
PITTSBURGH — Right-hander Troy Melton is joining the Detroit Tigers for his first start and MLB debut on Wednesday, July 23, against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. The Tigers haven't determined the corresponding roster move yet. The 24-year-old has an opportunity to stick in the big leagues as one of five starters in the rotation, possibly surpassing Keider Montero and Sawyer Gipson-Long on the depth chart — or could potentially shift to a bulk role out of the bullpen. That doesn't guarantee anything For Triple-A Toledo, Melton registered a 2.72 ERA with nine walks and 56 strikeouts across 36⅓ innings in eight games (six starts). Before that, he posted a 3.23 ERA with 11 walks and 45 strikeouts over 39 innings in 10 starts for Double-A Erie. Melton owns a 2.99 ERA in 18 games (16 starts) throughout the 2025 season, combining his performances with the Mud Hens and the SeaWolves. He threw five pitches at the Triple-A level: 50% fastballs, 21.7% cutters, 12.9% sliders, 8.3% changeups and 7.1% curveballs. His fastball averages 96.7 mph and maxes out at 99.9 mph, generating an above-average 25.9% whiff rate. HIs cutter has a 37.7% whiff rate and his slider has a 48.7% whiff rate. Melton ranks as the Tigers' No. 10 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. The Tigers selected him No. 117 overall in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of San Diego State.
