Novels narrate history and enable analysis: Yekkar

Mangaluru: A novel is not history, but it performs the function of narrating history, said Dr Gananath Yekkar, president of the Dr Shivaram Karanth Trust. "History demands records, while a novel allows for both history and analysis," he added.
He was speaking at the event 'Aanjel-75', marking the 75th anniversary of the publication of the first Konkani novel in Kannada script, 'Aanjel' by Joachim Santan Alvares, in 1950. It was organised by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy on Sunday.
Yekkar mentioned that a deep understanding of literature of any language leads to love for it. "Novel Aanjel is a historical milestone. Such works and events inspire today's youth in literary creation and pave the way for the expansion of literature to future generations," he said.
On the 75th anniversary of the publication of the novel, he emphasised the need for training in literary creation for students and youth, which would foster the growth of Konkani literature. "The academy should also encourage this by providing training, which would inspire the youth and nurture a love for literature," he said.
On the occasion, the ebook of the novel Aanjel was released by Fr Rocky D'Cunha, president of the Konkani Natak Sabha.

The event was presided over by academy chairman Joaquim Stany Alvares. Monica Alvares, the wife of late JS Alvares, was the guest of honour. Richard Alvares spoke about JS Alvares, and Dr Dimple Fernandes Puttur discussed the first Konkani novel. Keron Allen Madtha, who converted the novel into an ebook, spoke about the necessity of ebooks.

David Corenswet's ‘Superman' Soars Past Brad Pitt's ‘F1' for 3rd Biggest Hollywood Weekend Opening in India

David Corenswet's Superman soared at the Indian box office, earning an impressive Rs 25.50 crore during its opening weekend. This performance secured the third-biggest Hollywood opening in India, surpassing Brad Pitt's F1. While Superman couldn't eclipse Jurassic Park: Birth or Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, its debut marks a significant win for Warner Bros. David Corenswet 's much-anticipated debut as the Superman has taken flight at the Indian box office, registering an impressive Rs 25.50 crore over its opening weekend. The new Superman film has outperformed Brad Pitt 's adrenaline-fueled F1, which clocked Rs 21.4 crore, securing the third-biggest Hollywood opening weekend ever in India. Mohit Suri Spills On 20 Years In Bollywood - Ahaan & Aneet, Alia Bhatt Dream Collab & More Released across multiple languages and formats, including 3D, Superman enjoyed a strong three-day run. The film opened on Friday with Rs 7 crore, gained momentum on Saturday with Rs 9.5 crore, and held steady on Sunday with an estimated Rs 9 crore. The multilingual release strategy contributed significantly to its reach, with the English and Hindi versions accounting for the bulk of the earnings. Brad Pitt's F1, despite its high-octane action and critical buzz, couldn't match the iconic appeal of Superman. With Rs 21.4 crore, it delivered a respectable performance but fell short of the box office power of the red-caped superhero. However, Superman couldn't leap over the towering success of Jurassic Park: Birth, headlined by Scarlett Johansson , which remains the highest Hollywood opening in India of 2025 with Rs 39 crore. The sci-fi thriller blended nostalgia and spectacle, drawing massive footfalls across metros and tier-2 cities alike. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! The film has received positive word-of-mouth for Corenswet and James Gunn 's fresh take on the character, action sequences, and emotional depth, potentially giving it long legs beyond the first weekend. Superman also outperformed the Hindi releases this week like Rajkummar Rao 's Maalik which earned about Rs 14.25 crore and Aankhon Ki Gustakiyaan which collected Rs 1.2 crore.
