Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announces approval of 10 new ESIC Medical Colleges across India

Time of India23-04-2025
New Delhi: In a significant boost to public healthcare and medical education, Union Minister of Labour and Employment,
Mansukh Mandaviya
, announced on Tuesday that the
Employees' State Insurance Corporation
(ESIC) has given in-principle approval for the establishment of 10 new
ESIC medical colleges
across the country.
The decision was taken during the 194th meeting of the ESI Corporation and aims to expand access to quality healthcare and medical education for both workers and the general public.
The approved sites for the new ESIC medical colleges for the financial year 2024-25 include Andheri (Maharashtra), Basaidarapur (Delhi), Guwahati-Beltola (Assam), Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Jaipur (Rajasthan), Ludhiana (Punjab), Naroda-Bapunagar (Gujarat), Noida and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), and Ranchi (Jharkhand).
Union Minister Mandaviya stated that the move aligns with the government's vision to strengthen ESIC infrastructure and improve healthcare delivery, especially for India's workforce.
He also highlighted that the expansion would also address the growing demand for medical education seats in government institutions.
In addition to the approved institutions, 10 more locations are under active consideration for future ESIC medical colleges for the financial year 2024-25.
These proposed sites include Pune and Nagpur in Maharashtra, Manesar (Haryana), Kollam (Kerala), Surat (Gujarat), Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Bhubaneshwar (Odisha), Asansol (West Bengal), Pandunagar (Uttar Pradesh), and Margaon (Goa).
An official release from the Ministry of Labour and Employment said that the ESIC is drafting a new policy to expand access to medical services through Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) in districts where ESIC coverage is either non-existent or partially implemented.
The release said the objective is to ensure that deemed beneficiaries in these areas also receive timely and quality healthcare services under the ESIC framework.
The initiative will bridge healthcare gaps, especially in rural and semi-urban locations where ESIC facilities have been limited.
In addition, the release also announced a major convergence of ESIC with the
Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana
(AB-PMJAY). This move will enable over 14.4 crore ESIC beneficiaries to avail of cashless and comprehensive healthcare services at PMJAY-empanelled hospitals across the country.
The convergence with AB-PMJAY is expected to significantly enhance the reach of ESIC healthcare services, especially in states and regions where dedicated ESIC hospitals are yet to be established.
The ESIC has significantly expanded the geographical reach of the ESI Scheme, now covering 691 districts across the country -- up from 393 districts in 2014.
The scheme's rapid expansion over the past decade has brought millions of workers and their families under the ambit of ESIC benefits, including healthcare, maternity, and disability coverage.
As of April 21, 2025, ESIC services are actively implemented in 691 districts. Among the latest additions are 8 districts in Nagaland and 15 districts in Uttar Pradesh.
These newly notified areas will extend ESI coverage to approximately 76,274 additional insured persons (IPs) and their families, providing them with essential social protection.
The expansion continues with proposals underway for notification in one more district each in Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, two in Maharashtra, and six in Bihar.
ESIC is one of the largest social security organisations in India. It offers medical, cash, maternity, disability, and dependent benefits to workers covered under the ESI Act.

Sickle cell patients await BMT as govt scheme, centres yet to take off in Nagpur

1 2 Nagpur: At least 12 sickle cell and thalassaemia paediatric patients are now endlessly waiting for bone marrow transplants (BMT) as govt-run hospitals in the region don't have a dedicated unit for them. Two government centres have been proposed, but the lack of a financial assistance scheme has only meant that the costly BMT remains a non-starter. The tertiary care centres proposed to start a dedicated BMT centre for SCD and thalassaemia patients last year with much fanfare, but there has been little progress. Similarly, a government hospital has already started a BMT centre for other blood disorders, but a dedicated unit for SCD and thalassaemia patients is still a far cry, despite it signing an MoU for funding too. City MP and Union minister Nitin Gadkari has often slammed premier institutes for dragging their feet on starting BMT for SCD and thalassaemia patients in Nagpur. Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, in charge of state-run Daga Memorial Hospital, said they registered 12 patients after screening them for HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) typing tests. "Before BMT, HLA typing is a must to match a donor," he said. Daga Memorial Hospital has been facilitating the HLA test in association with Sankalp Foundation for free of cost. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? The earlier the BMT is done, the higher the chances of its success. The samples are sent to Bangalore. WCL is funding Rs 12 lakh for BMT of SCD and thalassaemia patients in some hospitals, including one in Mumbai. The Maharashtra government is yet to offer any funding for sickle cell and thalassaemia patients for BMT. Other states offer Rs 15 to 20 lakh to these patients for BMT. A couple of private hospitals in Nagpur have done BMT for patients funded by their respective state governments. The CSR sponsors require at least an 8-bed dedicated unit to pledge funding. Vinky Rughwani, president, thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Society of India, said, "We will ensure that these 12 patients get BMT done in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, or Chennai at no cost till Nagpur gets a centre. We have taken the initiative to establish a dedicated BMT centre for these patients. We hope to see BMT done in Nagpur soon." Centre orders probe into herbicide toxicity

The Centre on Sunday ordered a probe into alleged reports of toxicity resulting from the use of herbicide in soyabean fields, which could be linked to agricultural chemicals not conforming to standards. Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said large tracts of farms in several regions had reported toxicity.(X/ChouhanShivraj) A four-member team, comprising specialists, from the state-run Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) will carry out a field investigation and submit its report 'on an urgent basis', an order issued by the Union agriculture ministry-run ICAR said. Speaking to the media in Madhya Pradesh, Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said large tracts of farms in several regions had reported toxicity. The state is the country's largest soyabean grower, producing up to 5.5 million tonnes annually. Herbicides or weedicides are chemicals that kill weeds and agri-chemicals, especially if spurious or when not used per package instructions, can lead to toxicity in plants and humans. It is widely used by soyabean farmers to save on labour costs. Activists opposed to genetically-modified crops have alleged that illegal herbicide-tolerant soyabean GM soyabean has been found to be grown in many parts of the country's soyabean belt. The Coalition for a GM-Free India, an advocacy platform, and the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (Indian farmers' union), among several organisations, have in the past alleged that illegal soyabean crops had been detected in Gujarat. The BKS is affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS, a mother organisation of the BJP. 'This (toxicity) is not limited to one farm. A high-level team of scientists has been set up to probe it and pesticide companies responsible for this will be held accountable,' the farm minister said in the state's Chitkhara. According to the Indian Society of Weed Science, some commonly used herbicides in soybean include pendimethalin, imazethapyr and chlorimuron ethyl. Spurious pesticides have been proved to have a wide market in many states. The Modi government is planning to bring a stricter law to tackle the issue of fake fertilisers and spurious agricultural inputs, a problem that, according to a recent study, accounts for 40% of total sales by value, the HT had reported on June 3. Substandard agricultural materials can cut over 10 million tonnes of potential agricultural output in the country, according to a 2015 study by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce (FICCI). The value of illegal pesticides, for instance, has been expanding by nearly 20% a year, according to the study's findings.
