Poll sets the stage for Big Ten rivalry vs. SEC
After two consecutive national titles won by Big Ten teams, the SEC is hungry to get back on top.
The Big Ten and SEC rivalry goes beyond the football field. Over the offseason, the two most powerful conferences struggled to nail down a new playoff format. The Big Ten wants a 16-team format, with four guaranteed spots for both the Big Ten and SEC, two each for the Big 12 and ACC and 1 at-large bid. The SEC favors five conference champions and 11 at-large bids, which would presumably favor the top conferences most seasons.

Why bother with preseason rankings?
There is a school of thought that preseason rankings for any sport are a waste of time; after all, how do you accurately assess teams with new players from last season that have not played a game yet?
That argument has not and probably never will stop the proliferation of preseason guesswork, including media outlets with full-time journalists who provide analyses of just how good a team might be. After all, the conversation around the season isn't limited to game days. And if a preseason ranking turns out to be wildly inaccurate – as they can often be – that's part of the conversation, too.

CHICAGO (AP) — Spencer Torkelson hit a tiebreaking home run in the ninth to give the Detroit Tigers a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night. The first baseman's 26th homer with one out in the inning came off reliever Brandon Eisert (2-4) and hit the foul pole in left. The Tigers won their second straight game and for the third time in four contests. Rookie Colson Montgomery hit his 10th home run for the AL-worst White Sox, who managed just four hits and lost for the seventh time in eight games. Kyle Finnegan (2-4), the second of three Detroit relievers, got the win, and Will Vest came on after a 63-minute rain delay to work a clean ninth for his 17th save. Detroit starter Chris Paddack allowed three hits, including Montgomery's fifth-inning homer, while walking one and striking out four in the first 5 2/3 innings. The Tigers got their first run in the second when Dillon Dingler hit an RBI single off opener Elvis Peguero. The game was halted with two outs in the top of the ninth by a fast-moving pocket of showers. Key stat The Tigers have won 13 of their last 15 against their AL Central rivals in Chicago. Schwarber hits his 42nd homer in a 4-run 8th inning as the Phillies rally past the Reds
CINCINNATI (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit his 42nd homer of the season, a two-run shot that highlighted a four-run eighth inning, as the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 Monday night, extending their winning streak to four games. Schwarber's 42nd homer moved him past Shohei Ohtani and into the NL lead. The Dodgers faced the Angels later Monday night. Seattle's Cal Raleigh leads the AL and MLB with 45 homers. Schwarber has 97 RBIs this season. Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-3) allowed only three hits through seven innings. But, with two outs in the eighth, he allowed RBI doubles by Weston Wilson and Trea Turner. Schwarber followed with a two-run shot off Tony Santillan to complete the rally. Abbott bounced back after a rough outing on Wednesday when he allowed four earned runs and a pair of homers in a 6-1 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Warren (7-5), who allowed homers to Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach, struck out seven and walked none before Luke Weaver and David Bednar finished off New York's 23rd win in its last 30 regular-season meetings with Minnesota. Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in the eighth after Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge hit RBI singles in the seventh. CARDINALS 3, ROCKIES 2 ST. LOUIS (AP) — Brendan Donovan hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning, Miles Mikolas didn't give up a hit through 5 1/3 innings, and St. Louis sent Colorado to their eighth straight loss. Juan Mejia (1-1) failed to hold a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, while Kyle Leahy (3-1) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings after Mikolas went 6 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the season. Evoaldi's impressive streak for Rangers ends by giving up 3 homers and 5 runs
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi's impressive streak for the Texas Rangers ended with a dud. After going 6-0 with a 0.47 ERA in six starts since the start of July, Eovaldi was tagged for three home runs while allowing season highs of five runs and eight hits in five innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. The 35-year-old right-hander struck out three and walked one before exiting with Texas down 5-1. Eovaldi had given up only six runs total over his previous seven starts, and half of those runs came in the same game. There had only been two long balls against him his past 14 games. When he pitched one-hit ball over eight innings in a 2-0 win over the New York Yankees last Tuesday, it was the 13th time in a 14-game span allowing one or zero runs. Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson is the only pitcher since 1900 to record that kind of streak, according to STATS, and he did it in 1968, the season he won both the NL Cy Young and MVP awards. Even though Evoladi's overall ERA rose from 1.38 to 1.71, that is still better than the 1.94 of qualified MLB leader Paul Skenes. The AL leader is reigning Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal at 2.35. Eovaldi, who missed most of June with elbow inflammation, has thrown 116 innings in the Rangers' 120 games. Pitchers need one inning per team game to qualify as a league leader. Arizona's first five batters were retired before rookie first baseman Tyler Locklear homered on a 402-foot shot to left field in the second inning. Jake McCarthy opened the third with a double and Corbin Carrol followed with his 26th homer, a shot that ricocheted off the right-field pole. Ketel Marte was then hit by a pitch on his left elbow before Geraldo Perdomomo's 12th homer made it 5-0. Eovaldi benefitted from double plays in both the fourth and fifth to avoid giving up any more runs after Arizona also had hits in both those innings. The Diamondbacks were coming off a 17-hit game in their 13-6 win at home over Colorado on Sunday, when they set a franchise record with nine consecutive hits in the fifth inning — all with two outs. Only four MLB pitchers since 1920 had a lower ERA than the 1.38 for Eovaldi in the first 19 starts of a season, with Gibson's 1.06 for St. Louis in 1968 the lowest. This is Eovaldi's third season with the Rangers, who gave him the $100,000 All-Star bonus that is in his contract even though he was left off the American League All-Star team last month.
