I'm confident my big Saturday bet is easily the best horse in the race – and he can help land us a 23-1 double
Ability over distance is a juggling act punters face in many races.
1
What do I mean by that?
Well in an extreme example let's take Frankel – arguably the world's best ever Flat horse – who clearly would have beaten a 70-rated handicap over 2m and a 70-rated sprinter over 5f.
Yet Frankel, from the evidence we have, was best at 1m and 1m2f. His class was just something else.
Notable Speech has only ever raced over a mile in his ten starts.
His victories include the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and his defeats include a fine third in the Breeders' Cup Mile.
But if the Charlie Appleby-trained runner had failed in the Guineas he might well have gone sprinting as a three-year-old.
On Saturday he finally does that in the Group 1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai July Cup over 6f.
It was clearly a late decision, as he was supplemented at a cost of £36,000. But I suspect it will prove inspired.
Notable Speech's pedigree suggests speed is what he is all about.
His broodmare sire Invincible Spirit won the Haydock Park Sprint. He also has Pivotal in the mix, and he gets fast horses.
Lots of milers have done well in the July Cup.
Landseer was fourth in the 2002 renewal after landing a French 2000 Guineas, while Alcohol Free banged in the Sussex Stakes and Coronation before taking the 2022 July Cup.
Further back remember Chief Singer and Green Desert?
They were both placed in 2,000 Guineas and won this very same big sprint.
Ajdal landed the July Cup after running in the Derby and Royal Academy took this prize before a thrilling success in the Breeders' Cup Mile.
Dream Ahead went from the St James's Palace Stakes to this event having finished fifth at Ascot.
Notable Speech was actually seventh in that last year and fourth in the Queen Anne in June.
The trip will be no excuse for Notable Speech and his draw looks good. I'm confident he's easily the best horse.
Opposition in a big field includes Wathnan improver Flora Of Bermuda – third to owner companion Lazzat in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot – and Whistlejacket, sixth in the Commonwealth Cup but a fine juvenile for Aidan O'Brien and a horse who has been backed down from much bigger prices.
He won the July Stakes over course and distance last season but that was on good to soft.
Inisherin has the ability to run a big one but was only fifth this time last year when the 11-8 favourite.
Believing was poor at Royal Ascot from a bad draw, while Jasour might be the best of the outsiders.
It's a marathon on ITV Racing on Saturday, with no fewer than 12 races being shown. It will be hard to keep up.
More Thunder is back out for William Haggas in the bet365 Bunbury Cup over 7f after an unlucky second in the Wokingham over 6f at Royal Ascot.
That performance came on the back of two Newmarket successes oved 6f.
Tom Marquand described the Ascot defeat as 'disgusting', but like Notable Speech it might just be those 6f victories came from class.
Sir Michael Stoute ran this boy up to and extended 1m2f last season and he won his novice over 1m2f.
Seven furlongs in the Bunbury Cup should be no issue and it's easy to argue he's been crying out for a little further.
Who is to say he's not a Group horse masquerading as a handicapper and doesn't end up in something like the Group 1 Foret at the end of the season?
If he is then he's chucked in here off 98.
There is top class racing at York and Ascot too.
At York I'm hoping for a good spin from See That Storm in the John Smith's Cup Handicap over an extended 1m2f.
My selection goes for Ed Bethell and Callum Rodriguez and is lightly raced after just nine starts at the age of four.
He has a reasonable draw and upped to a mark of 95 - the same here - finished second to Burrito over a little bit further at this track last time.
This distance looks ideal and there is no reason why he won't be in the mix again - he has thrived since going to Bethell from the Andrew Balding yard.
A notable Saturday. Let's hope it's one to shout about let alone give a good speech!

The 12-year-old Hampshire girl hoping to inspire female cricketers
"I think more girls would love cricket if they could give it a try."A 12-year-old girl who plays at county level after taking up the sport two years ago says it should be easier for girls to become who lives in Hampshire and goes to school in Newbury, Berkshire, tells the BBC she was "always having to wear boys' clothes" because she struggled to find cricket wear for she has been selected to be an ambassador for a company making cricket clothing exclusively for women and girls after the owners were "blown away" by her "vision for change in the sport". Honour Black, co-founder of Maiden Cricket, says Mya was picked to represent the firm thanks to her "clear passion for making cricket more inclusive and accessible for girls".The company, set up by sisters Honour and Cat in 2024, aims to design comfortable clothing specifically for female sisters say Mya's role would give her opportunities to meet industry leaders and participate in who plays for Falkland Cricket Club, says she started playing cricket at her old school."They put me into the hard ball team and I just really enjoyed playing hard ball with my school," she says."I joined two local clubs and I play for my county as well now."But there was one problem."I was looking for girls cricket wear because I was always having to wear boys clothes," she says."I came across [Maiden Cricket] and I really liked what they stood for and their focus to help more girls and women play cricket and be more comfortable in their clothes, playing the sport we love."The company said it received hundreds of applicants for the ambassador says: "Mya really stood out to us from the start."Her drive to raise the profile of girls' hard ball cricket and her desire to inspire others really align with Maiden's mission."We were blown away by her enthusiasm and vision for change in the sport." Mya says: "I think more girls would love cricket if they could give it a try."We just need to make it easier for them so they can have a go."Her dream is to play for Hampshire Hawks - and then perhaps England."It's going to be a hard challenge to do if I want to play for England but I have to just work really hard," she says. Are Celtic ready for fight on all fronts?
With Celtic about to begin the defence of their Scottish title and facing a crunch Champions League qualifying play-off, just how equipped are they to build on recent success and progress again this season?Recruitment, aligned to key departures, has been a central theme of Celtic supporter conversation of late, with apparent concern that the squad is lacking in a number of areas that was echoed by manager Brendan Rodgers saying on Friday that there are "gaps in the squad that are very clear".There is still a long way to go in the transfer window, but with the expectation of a stronger title challenge from Rangers and a clear desire for continued participation at European football's top table, are Celtic ready to take on the immediate challenges ahead?Rodgers targeted improvement in Europe as a key aim on his return to the club and got that last season, pushing Bayern Munich in the Champions League play-off stage to narrowly miss out on a last 16 spot. Participation on that stage this season will be determined by a play-off in just under a month and missing out would be a significant just one year left on Rodgers' three-year contract, what happens over the coming weeks may go a long way to determining if he believes he can continue such despite saying he is "very happy" at Celtic, the 52-year-old Northern Irishman stressed he is "not the type of manager" to stick around if a club is merely treading water and that there was "no update" on a new contract. Tale of two Rodgers tenures With Rodgers entering a third season in charge of Celtic for the second time, it has been almost undiluted domestic success across both domestic trebles in his first two seasons came alongside challenging Champions League Cup victory in 2018 meant a seventh straight domestic trophy, but a perceived frustration that he had hit a ceiling with Celtic and the lure of the English Premier League sparked fury among a previously adoring support as Rodgers left for Leicester return four years later was met with a lukewarm response. He stated he would be there for the full three-year contract and quickly started winning trophies again to win over the support. He has won two league and cup doubles in two seasons, but it is the clear improvement at Champions League level that showcases Celtic's progression under that to continue, he has repeatedly stressed the need for quality additions to his squad. That need has become acute with the exit of Nicolas Khun, the long-term injury to fellow winger Jota and the lack of a direct replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi since the Japan forward left in January. The question is whether Celtic's recruitment ambitions match Rodgers' desire to continue driving the club forward and what that means moving forwards? Reluctance to spend a fair accusation as Celtic seek quality? Rodgers has repeatedly used the word "quality" when describing what his squad needs. He's also been clear that he wants more firepower and is short on natural wingers. Scotland defender Kieran Tierney's return adds undoubted talent and Sweden winger Benjamin Nygren appears to be good business on early evidence. Other new faces appear to be mainly for is clear is a significant section of the Celtic support feel a reluctance to spend significant sums is putting not only European ambitions at risk but also their domestic that fair? FThe former Celtic midfielder Scott Allan understands fan frustration but points to the return of Tierney on a free transfer as an example that is being somewhat overlooked."The fact that they were able to get Tierney on the free papers over the fact that he's a player of immense quality," he told BBC Scotland. "The only concerning thing is the fact that Brendan Rodgers actually spoke about players coming in and not necessarily getting in as starters. "I think Celtic fans are looking at players who can come in and affect the team now and that's where the concern is growing from." Long-term transfer strategy paid off, but should Celtic bow to fan demands? Celtic's long-term transfer strategy has delivered time and time again and must be the envy of many clubs. Huge profit has been brought in for the likes of Matt O'Riley, Jota and spent big last summer on midfielder Arne Engels and striker Adam Idah. With hindsight, some fans feel they may have overpaid, but that view may change over the coming months.A rough estimate of receipts this summer alone suggests a figure of around £20-25m has come in against a spend a fraction of that. A reminder of the first window of Rodgers' second spell is notable in terms of fan satisfaction. Celtic recruited widely and supporter reaction at the time seemed overwhelmingly positive. A look through that list of names might provide some caution. Luis Palma, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Kwon Hyeok-kyu, Marco Tilio, Odin Thiago Holm and Maik Nawrocki have all failed to make the grade after an outlay of close to £ and care over fees may bear more fruit than the examples above. How will Rodgers feel right now? Rodgers has repeatedly indicated that he expects his squad to be stronger come the end of August and there is likely to be movement in the coming days and weeks. The question is whether that will be enough to satisfy him and a support desperate to enjoy continued domestic success and see their team build on a successful Champions League campaign last term, with that play-off hurdle crucial."I can totally understand his Rodgers' frustration," Allan said. "He spoke after the Bayern Munich exit about evolving every year. That was probably looking ahead to this window."There were a lot of questions asked when Kyogo left. Daizen Maeda did a job as number nine, but I think there's no question Brendan Rodgers prefers him on the wing. "He's wanting to evolve the team, he's wanting to go longer in Europe and that comes down to getting quality in."In Rodgers' own words, Celtic have work to do in this window with significant challenges coming over the horizon.
