FIA Rules: 'It's a major performance differentiator': Stake F1 team boss Jonathan Wheatley on tightened FIA testing and possible F1 pecking order change

Team Principal of
Stake F1
Team KICK Sauber
Jonathan Wheatley
has made a dire warning before the next
Spanish Grand Prix
, implying that a change in
Formula 1
's pecking order is possible because of a new
FIA
rule aimed at curbing flexi-wings.

The adjustment takes effect at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and is intended to curb wing flexibility at high speeds — something Jonathan Wheatley thinks will radically change team performance.
FIA's flexi-wing crackdown to shake up grid; mid-pack teams see opportunity
Everything you need to know ahead of the 2025 Spanish GP 🇪🇸
The Spanish round will be the first event of the 2025 season to feature more stringent FIA tests for aerodynamic flexibility, specifically for the front and rear wings. While some teams are already modifying their designs in preparation, others have stated that they are confident that no drastic changes are needed.
Jonathan Wheatley, who transferred to Stake F1 from Red Bull this year, thinks the impact of this regulatory adjustment could be immense, particularly considering the closeness with which frontrunners and midfield teams are currently finishing.
Talking of the new rule, Jonathan Wheatley said, 'It's a major performance differentiator, so I think you're right; it could be a change in the order. You look at how tight it is at the front and in the midpack; a little change like that could have a huge difference.'
The current Formula 1 standings are led by McLaren, which has taken an early stranglehold on the championship by winning five of the first six races. Red Bull Racing and Mercedes are closely behind, while Stake F1 finds itself at the bottom of the Constructors' Championship, still searching for momentum in a transitional season before becoming Audi's official works team in 2026.
This rule alteration might be an unusual chance for Stake F1 to close the gap.

Wheatley accepted the challenge but emphasised the plans to continue developing the team: 'We have a programme in place for upgrades,' he said. 'What we're trying to do is understand all of the development that we've done so far and put together a slightly more focused package than we've done before. I don't want to put a timeline on that just yet.'
Spanish GP might be a critical juncture in 2025 F1 title battle
As regulations clamp down and the title contest heats up, the Spanish Grand Prix may turn out to be a turning point of the season.
If the FIA's tests for flexi-wings affect front-runners more than expected, the gate may be opened for struggling teams like Stake F1 to move up the standings.

Wheatley's comments are shared sentiment in the paddock — that even small regulatory changes can spread throughout the grid with dramatic scale. Those with the best flexible engineering departments and flexible upgrade routes may have their biggest payback in Barcelona.

Yamal sparkles as Spain beats France in thrilling semifinal

Lamine Yamal won the battle of Ballon d'Or contenders by scoring twice as Spain eclipsed France 5-4 in their Nations League semifinal. The 17-year-old Yamal outshone French counterparts Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele on Thursday (June 5, 2025) as Spain initially ran riot against Didier Deschamps' tired-looking team to book its place in Sunday's final against Portugal. Portugal defeated host nation Germany 2-1 on Wednesday. Thursday's game had been billed as a contest between young stars, but it was clear that Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League win in Munich on Saturday had added more weight to French legs with PSG stars Doué and Dembélé disappointing. Highest scoring game It was the highest scoring game in the Nations League's short history, but three of the four French goals came after Yamal had made it 5-1 and the Spanish players eased up thinking the game was won. Kylian Mbappé scored what seemed a consolation from a penalty with France 4-0 down. Substitute Rayan Cherki scored late on his France debut after Yamal scored Spain's fifth, then Spain defender Daniel Vivian conceded an own goal, and Cherki set up fellow substitute Randal Kolo Muani in stoppage time as France ultimately came close to an improbable comeback. 'It was a great game. In the end it was a little close, but we played very well and I think deserved to win,' Yamal said. Nico Williams opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after Yamal threaded the ball through to Mikel Oyarzabal, who held off two defenders and served it on a plate for Williams to rifle to the roof of the net. Mikel Merino, the hero when Spain last played in Stuttgart, made it 2-0 three minutes later after playing a one-two with Oyarzabal. Théo Hernandez struck the crossbar and Spain needed goalkeeper Unai Simón to deny Doué, then Mbappé and Dembélé. But Spain looked capable of scoring at any time. Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen thought he'd scored spectacularly after a brilliantly worked free kick, only to have the goal ruled out for offside. It was the 20-year-old Huijsen's third game for Spain. It looks like he's set to stay. Adrien Rabiot conceded a penalty for a mistimed challenge on Yamal, who dusted himself off to make it 3-0 from the spot in the 54th. Pedri scored a minute after that, taking Williams' pass with his first touch and dinking it past the bewildered Mike Maignan with his next. Pedro Porro's foul gave Mbappé his chance from the penalty, but Yamal replied to that by prodding the ball past Maignan for 5-1.

'Get your hands off me': Shaquille O'Neal throws Stephen A Smith out during pregame show in a lighthearted moment

It is no secret that Inside the NBA is moving to ESPN from TNT. During a crossover segment between ESPN and TNT, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith brought his signature energy to the set of Inside the NBA, resulting in a playful clash with Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith. Shaquille O'Neal showed Stephen A. Smith out, but it's all love In what fans are calling one of the funniest moments of the Finals pregame coverage, Stephen A. Smith walked onto the Inside the NBA set unannounced, getting in the faces of Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith. Smith wasted no time pushing boundaries—literally—by touching Shaq's head, prompting an exaggerated but hilarious reaction from the NBA legend. 'Get your hands off me, Stephen A. Smith,' said O'Neal, dressed in a brown suit, holding the mic in mock protest. The set erupted in laughter, with Kenny Smith jumping in, echoing, 'Back up off my guy, man!' Despite the apparent theatrics, the chemistry between the analysts was clear. As the show continued, Stephen A. kept up his antics, interacting with the panel and playfully testing the boundaries of live television decorum. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Paneles solares en España: lo que todo propietario debería saber Eco Experts Undo At one point, O'Neal quipped, 'Bring me some hot chocolate so I can spill it on your Blazer,' poking fun at Stephen A.'s choice of outfit while keeping the mood light and jovial. As the iconic Inside the NBA prepares to leave its longtime home at TNT, fans have been understandably anxious about how the beloved show will transition to ESPN in the 2025-26 season. Fortunately, recent updates suggest the core of the show will remain untouched, especially its freewheeling postgame format. According to Front Office Sports, ESPN plans to give Inside the NBA the same 'extensive' postgame airtime that viewers have come to expect. That means fans can still count on Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, and Shaquille O'Neal delivering their signature mix of analysis, comedy, and chaos without being squeezed by strict runtime limitations. 'There will be an extensive post-game show, say sources. ESPN's goal is to let the post-game segment run as long as it does now on TNT,' the report noted. Still, not everyone on the crew is at ease. Kenny Smith shared his lingering concerns in a recent interview with The New Yorker, focusing on the lack of control the crew had in negotiating the move. 'We have the same crew of people doing the show,' Smith said. 'But the timing: Are we a half hour now? Are we forty-five minutes? Fifteen minutes?' 'Because I felt that the four of us should have went into ABC to negotiate that deal... we are the I.P. now.' Now, only time will tell the actual scenario of the fan-favorite show after the historic move.

Spain thrash France to storm into final of Nations League 2025; set to face Portugal

Spain beat France to claim a spot in the final of the Nations League 2025. The match seemed as a one-sided game in the first half turned into a nail-biting thriller while reaching its final stages. The winners will now face Portugal in the final match and the losing team will face Germany in the clash for third place. Spain looked unstoppable and took a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half of the match. The game began with France looking strong, keeping the ball, and trying to break through Spain's defense. By the 16th minute, France had completed 202 passes compared to Spain's 172. But Spain's goalkeeper, Unai Simon, was outstanding, making key saves, including stopping a shot from Doue in the 31st minute of the game and the scores were level at 0-0. In the 23rd minute, Spain took the lead with star player Lamine Yamal gave a pass to Oyarzabal in the box. Oyarzabal outsmarted the defenders and set up Nico Williams, who smashed the ball into the top of the net to register a goal. Two minutes after the first goal, in the 25th minute, Spain scored again. Mikel Merino and Oyarzabal passed the ball quickly to each other, freeing Merino inside the box. He then kicked the ball into the bottom corner of the net, making the score 2-0. France kept trying, with players like Dembele and Olise creating chances, but Spain's defense stayed solid with Unai Simon making stunning saves. A late goal by Huijsen was ruled out for offside in the 44th minute, keeping the score at 2-0 after the halftime whistle blew. The match resumed after half-time and the Spanish attack got more lethal. In the 50th minute, Yamal won a penalty after being fouled by Rabiot, who earned a yellow card. After a VAR check, Yamal converted the penalty in the 54th minute, making it 3-0. A minute later, Pedri added a fourth goal. Pedri played a quick one-two with Williams before he sent the ball past Maignan, solidifying Spain's dominance. France earned a penalty in the 58th minute when Porro fouled Mbappe. The French captain stepped up and scored in the 59th minute, putting the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 4-1. Spain kept control, and in the 67th minute, Yamal scored again. The young player slipped the ball past Maignan from a tough angle, making it 5-1 and sealing the win. In the 63rd minute, both teams made changes. France brought on Barcola, Gusto, and Cherki for Kalulu, Doue, and Olise, while Spain replaced Williams and Pedri with Ruiz and Olmo. France bounced back strongly and in the 79th minute, debutant Rayan Cherki ignited hopes with a stunning volley, assisted by Kylian Mbappe, taking the scores to 2-5. An unfortunate own goal by Spain's Dani Vivian in the 84th minute, added to the drama as Spain's dominating lead got lessened. France's persistence paid off in the 90+3rd minute when Randal Kolo Muani headed in a pinpoint cross from Cherki, making it 5-4. Despite their late surge, France couldn't find an equalizer. As the match entered five minutes of added time, France pushed desperately for a draw. A free kick in the 90+5th minute saw Spain's goalkeeper Unai Simon confidently claim the ball, thwarting France's final chance. The referee's whistle at 90+6th minute confirmed Spain's hard-fought victory, with the Spanish crowd erupting as their team held firm. Spain will now face Portugal in the final clash to be played at the Allianz Arena. Earlier, Cristiano Ronaldo's team defeated Germany 2-1 in the first semifinal of the tournament. The match will be a thrilling contest and it will be interesting to see both teams locking horns.
