CM urges artistes, writers to champion Kerala's cultural progress
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has stressed the crucial role of cultural, literary, and artistic voices in steering Kerala's progress, seeking the active involvement of stakeholders to enrich the State's social fabric.
He was speaking at Parasparam, an interaction with cultural leaders held at Lulu Convention Centre in Thrissur on Monday, as part of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's fourth anniversary celebrations.
'Kerala continues to uphold secular values and humanitarian principles. Artistes and writers have historically played a transformative role in shaping a progressive society,' the Chief Minister said. However, he stressed the need for introspecting if such interventions continued with the same intensity today.
'Resist regressive forces'
Highlighting Kerala's unique cultural identity, the Chief Minister underscored the contributions of social reformers such as Sree Narayana Guru in eradicating superstitions and promoting social awareness. He called upon cultural activists to stand united in resisting regressive forces and to act with clarity and conviction in defending the State's secular and progressive legacy.
Addressing questions about the Nava Keralam vision, he clarified that it was not just about one-dimensional development but about inclusive growth that reached every section and corner of the State. 'We aim to elevate our society to match the living standards of middle-income countries, with a strong foundation in social commitment and public welfare,' he said.
Mr. Vijayan said that the State would be free of extreme poverty by November 1, thanks to strengthened public distribution, education, and health-care systems.
Inclusivity
Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian, in his address, described Parasparam as a tribute to the government's nine-year journey and the cultural community's support. 'Our government has rolled out several model initiatives for artistes, from the Vajra Jubilee Fellowship to extensive outreach in folk and tribal arts,' he said. Projects had been tailored for differently abled, coastal, tribal, and transgender artistes to ensure inclusivity in the cultural landscape, he added.
The event began with a traditional welcome dance by the Guru Gopinath Natanagramam.
Ministers K. Rajan and R. Bindu; Planning Board Vice-Chairman V.K. Ramachandran; K. Radhakrishnan, MP; Thrissur Mayor M.K. Varghese; P. Balachandran, A.C. Moideen, and Murali Perunelli, MLAs; district panchayat president V.S. Prince; Cultural Affairs Director Divya S. Iyer; and District Collector Arjun Pandian took part.
Organised by the Department of Culture, over 2,500 cultural activists from 14 districts attended the event and 15 distinguished individuals were honoured on stage for their contributions.

Roof sheet collapse: Congress files complaint with human rights panel
Leader of the Opposition in the Thrissur Corporation Rajan J. Pallan and deputy leader E.V. Sunilraj have lodged a formal complaint with the Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), demanding legal action against officials responsible for the collapse of a roof sheet from a building owned by the Thrissur Corporation onto Municipal Office Road recently. The incident occurred on May 23, followed heavy rain and gusty wind. The metal roofing, installed atop a multi-storey building owned by the Corporation, had been in a dangerously unstable condition since April 22 due to a storm. Despite being aware of the risk, officials failed to take any preventive measures for over a month, the complainants alleged. No one was injured, but it was purely due to luck, the Opposition leaders stressed. Even 15 days after the incident, the LDF-led Corporation council has taken no action against those responsible, Mr. Pallan said. The official involved with the construction work is a known sympathiser of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], and hence the inaction, he added. 'Unsafe buildings' He further criticised the Corporation for not demolishing structurally unsafe buildings and accused the CPI(M) leadership of attempting to shield negligent officials. The Opposition warned that if such efforts continue, they would escalate protests both within and outside the council. 'We will not accept a Mayor or a ruling council that puts the lives of citizens at risk,' Mr. Pallan said.

No official version of Bharat Mata portrait, says Prasad
Ministers in the Left Democratic Front government in Kerala on Friday made it clear that they were not in agreement with the use of the Bharat Mata portrait at the World Environment Day event at Raj Bhavan here as the picture was not authorised as the official version by the Constitution or the Indian government. Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, who boycotted the event at Raj Bhavan a day ago over the use of the portrait, said that those in constitutional offices cannot convert government programmes into political events. A similar view was expressed by General Education Minister V. Sivankutty, who said Raj Bhavan and the Governor were above politics and said Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar should withdraw from the stand taken by him. The Governor had on Thursday asserted that there would be no compromise on Bharat Mata. No Indian flag Mr. Prasad, while talking to a TV channel, said no Bharat Mata portrait has ever been acknowledged as the official or authorised version by the Constitution or any of the governments in power since independence. The portrait was not carrying the Indian flag, but that of a political organisation, and, therefore, it could not be honoured during a government event. The Governor was free to pay homage to the portrait at private events, but it cannot be done in State government programmes. 'We all have a political view, but those in constitutional positions have restrictions on how they express it,' he said adding that the government view was that such a stand ought not to have been taken by a constitutional establishment. He expressed the hope that it will be corrected by the persons concerned. 'It actually should not be repeated in our country. We cannot accept it in Kerala,' he added. The Minister questioned why the Governor was 'rigid' on the issue when none of the earlier Governors and not even the Presidents of the country have carried out such a practice in the past.

Anwar is a closed chapter for LDF: T.P. Ramakrishnan
Convener of the Left Democratic Front T.P. Ramakrishnan has said that P.V. Anwar was a closed chapter for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and that the front will never again trust a leader who changes his stand every now and then. Speaking to reporters in Kozhikode on Friday, Mr. Ramkrishnan said that the current political situation puts the LDF at an advantage in the forthcoming Assembly bypolls in Nilambur constituency and that M. Swaraj was a capable candidate. Mr. Ramakrishnan criticised the Congress for kicking up a controversy over the distribution of welfare pensions with the polls approaching. He explained the history of the welfare pensions in the State and alleged that the Congress was always against it. 'By criticising the distribution of pensions, they are insulting not just the goodwill of the government but over 62 lakh people in the State who receive it,' he said. The LDF convener welcomed the stand of the State government as well as the Department of Agriculture in boycotting the World Environment Day programme at the Raj Bhavan. 'The Governor adopted a stand favourable to the RSS and the department had no other option,' he said. He also stated that the results of the Nilambur bypolls will have a far-reaching impact on Kerala politics. He also stated that the Congress' approach to P.V. Anwar was nothing short of deceit.
