The Block star Elle Ferguson calls out the most shocking interview question she's gotten: 'Do you think a man would be asked this?'

Daily Mail21-05-2025
Elle Ferguson has called out a series of shocking episodes from her past that she had to endure while building a successful career as a businesswoman.
The 39-year-old The Block star and influencer took to her stories on Wednesday to a share a throwback moment that many women can relate to.
Captioning the story 'awkward question' Elle related the cringe worthy experience in the post.
'I remember so vividly sitting in a job interview (conducted by a woman) and being asked is the reason why I've come so far in my job because of the "way I looked"?'
She also posted a single black tile with the caption, 'can I ask you a question?'
'I'm sitting here looking at you...you're an attractive looking girl...lady.
'How important does that play in getting yourself to stand out amongst the crowd?'
She posted another tile that asked, 'Do you think a man would be asked this question?' and including a 'Yes/No' dialogue box.
Elle then finished her story by posting a final tile that claimed, 'This was one of the questions I was asked in 2019 by Mark Bouris.'
The entrepreneur was referring to her guest spot on Bouris' The Mentor podcast when she was interviewed by the Wizard Home Loans founder.
During the interview Bouris can be heard telling the former Block cast member, 'Going through life, being an attractive woman in the fashion industry, hoe do you reconcile that as an advantage and I think its an advantage and how did you work it.'
Bouris contuned: 'I mean there's nothing wrong with using your assets and I'm not saying you are just that, because I know people will be critical...so how do we deal with it?'
Elle replied that she has had to work 'harder' for her success in order to break through the 'Legally Blonde dumb blonde' stereotype.
Elsewhere in the segment Bouris made a point of telling Elle he wanted to defend her large following and discounting critics who claim its 'because' of the fashion gurus looks.
She also included this comment
Elle also shared a link to an Instagram post from the Unstoppablyher Instagram group who shared a parody video sending up sexist questions.
The clip, created for International Women's Day, featured men being asked questions intended for women, including. 'Do you think your looks helped you getting promoted?'
It comes after Elle recently opened up about the heartbreaking reason she has held off on getting married to her retired AFL star fiancé Joel Patfull.
The influencer who quit The Block series in 2022 due to personal hardship, told Stellar Magazine last month that the pain of her mother's death has prevented her from tying the knot.
'My mum was in palliative care for two years and was sick for over 10. I remember at the end her not being able to walk,' Elle began.
Elle's beloved mother Kim died in March 2023 aged 57, following a long cancer battle.
She said she couldn't imagine having a wedding without her mother present, despite being engaged to her The Block co-star for seven years.
'I'm trying to move through it because I'm so blessed to have this amazing man with me in life,' she said.
However, Elle said she and Joel would eventually get married when she felt the time was right: 'I do want to lock it down. We'll get there.'
In March, she and her jewellery designer sister Lucie will mark the tenth anniversary since the death of their mother Kim on her 57th birthday after a long and hard fought battle with cancer.
The NSW Central Coast mum-of-two was diagnosed with colorectal cancer 10 years earlier, which resulted in three 'quite full-on operations'.
She was diagnosed with bowel cancer a few years later, which moved into her pelvis and cervix, forcing her to quit teaching as she underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the same time.
Ferguson was eventually given the devastating news her cancer was terminal and had 12 months to live.
Ms Ferguson died surrounded by her daughters on March 14, 2015.
It was her 57th birthday and she outlived her 'expiry date' by two years.

David and Victoria Beckham face fresh heartache as new details emerge of Brooklyn's vow renewal speech to wife Nicola Peltz

David and Victoria Beckham look set to face fresh heartache as new details have emerged of son Brooklyn's vow renewal speech to wife Nicola Peltz. Brooklyn, 26, and Nicola, 30, said 'I do' for a second time on August 2 in Westchester County in front of her family, with the Beckham clan notably absent amid their ongoing feud. His parents David, 50, and Victoria, 51, and his brothers Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and sister Harper, 14, were nowhere in sight at the second wedding, while in contrast, Nicola's family had key roles at the lavish event. And in an additional blow for the Beckham family, Brooklyn reportedly opened up on his love for the Peltz family, as well as speaking 'movingly' of his wife, as he gave his speech in front of the 200 guests. A source told The Mirror: 'He spoke from the heart - and at the centre of his heart is Nicola who he loves very dearly, but also the Peltz family who have really stuck by his side. He wanted to recognise them all, and was determined to do them all justice.' News of the 'heartfelt tribute' to billionaire Nelson Peltz, 83, and wife Claudia, 70, will no doubt add to the pain of the Beckham family amid their estrangement from Brooklyn, with it said that no such tribute was given for his own parents. Daily Mail has contacted representatives of Brooklyn, David and Victoria for comment. In addition to his immediate family, Brooklyn's grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles were also absent and only found out about the wedding vow renewal by reading it online. It comes as Brooklyn is reportedly 'heartbroken' over the way his wife Nicola is being 'painted as a viper' within their ongoing family feud. Billionaire heiress Nicola has previously been accused of 'isolating' Brooklyn from not only his family, but his friends too. New sources allege Brooklyn is not being held from making his own decisions and is 'devastated' over the way his wife is being portrayed. A source told The Mirror: 'It's so rooted in misogyny that all of the heat for his parents not being invited is on Nicola. 'Everyone seems to forget that Brooklyn is an adult man and fully capable of speaking out. Nicola would have respected all that he chose. 'It breaks Brooklyn's heart to see his wife being painted as this vixen and viper.' in an additional blow for the Beckham family, Brooklyn reportedly opened up on his love for the Peltz family, as well as speaking 'movingly' of his wife, as he gave his speech in front of the 200 guests News of the 'heartfelt tribute' to billionaire Nelson Peltz, 83, and wife Claudia, 70, will no doubt add to the pain of the Beckham family amid their estrangement from Brooklyn, with it said that no such tribute was given for his own parents Daily Mail has contacted Brooklyn, Nicola and the Beckhams representatives for comment. Insiders previously told Daily Mail that Brooklyn's parents are concerned his wife Nicola holds disproportionate sway in her marriage to their son. They said: 'They think Nicola is a bit of a horror but she isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Nicola loves having Brooklyn at her side and she loves him very much. But he is also very useful. 'The wider Beckham family and Brooklyn's friends – many of whom he no longer sees – take the view that he does what Nicola wants. From Beckhams' point of view, it's not nice to watch.' Brooklyn and Nicola's vow renewal was a glamorous affair packed with family, fashion and friends earlier this month. As more pictures of both the big day and the after-party come to light, it is becoming increasingly more apparent that the festivities were fairly one-sided - with most of the guestlist comprising Brooklyn's post-Nicola peers and pals. The lack of Brooklyn's side sparked widespread chat on social media, including comments from fans who likened their relationship to that of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - after the royal turned his back on his family and moved to the US. When Brooklyn and Nicola first tied the knot in 2022, they hosted a three-day Palm Beach extravaganza, which saw 500 guests party in no-expense-spared marquees in front of the ocean - where both families stood front and centre . Fast- forward three years and the change is remarkable, with no sign of the Beckham parents or the siblings Brooklyn held so close to his heart. In their place is the entirety of the Peltz clan - with Nicola's mother Claudia and her father Nelson holding all-star roles on the day.

Lucinda Williams: ‘My singing is better now than it was before my stroke'

You've played many prestigious venues in your career. How do you feel about gracing the Sydney Opera House stage? It's on a lot of people's bucket list, so I'm very excited. I've been doing this show [Don't Tell Anybody the Secrets, based on Williams' memoir] at different venues. When I play, I always tell a little story about each song anyway, but this is where I stretch out and go more into detail, and I've got a visual screen behind me showing photographs of some of the characters I refer to in the songs. It's similar to Bruce Springsteen's Broadway show. You're touring with Paul Kelly, who's a national treasure here, but not as celebrated in Europe and America. Should he be better known beyond our shores? Yes. Absolutely. That's one of the issues in America that really bothers me, because if someone stands out, instead of holding them up, we just call them a cult artist or whatever. When I was first starting out, the record companies kept saying they didn't know what to do with me, because my music fell between the cracks between country and rock, which is now referred to as Americana. Being unique and original doesn't always work in the record business. It's all about marketing. You had a stroke in November 2020. Can you describe your recovery – can you play guitar any better now? I can sing better; I can't play guitar better. But I've been blessed with two brilliant guitar players, Doug Pettibone, who's been with me for a while, and a new one, Marc Ford, who was in the Black Crowes. It works really well, I can just concentrate on my singing. A lot of people have approached me and said that my singing was better now than it was before my stroke. What's the most memorable first date you've been on, good or bad? Oh, Gawd. First of all, I didn't like the whole idea of dating, because I was so shy. The whole idea of going out to dinner and a movie would just terrify me, because I would just feel really self-conscious. But I remember being asked to dinner by this guy, and sitting down at the table and hearing him say he'd already eaten. That just really turned me off. I thought it was extremely rude. What's the best lesson you've learned from someone you've worked with? I was working with an engineer, Dusty Wakeman, on the Sweet Old World album. I was complaining about an itty-bitty tiny mistake that I'd made, and he told me about how Native American Indians, when they'd weave a blanket, they would leave a mistake in the weaving on purpose. You are a road warrior. When you check in to a hotel, what's the first thing you do? I'm a road worrier! People tease me all the time about worrying too much. What's the first thing I do? Well, it depends on if we have a show that night or what's going on. But after we check in, I like to sit down in a regular chair or on the couch. Just to be able to be off the bus and sit in a regular piece of furniture feels really good. What was the song you last played on Spotify? I don't use Spotify. Mainly because, you know, the artists hardly get paid. My music's not on Spotify. [Lucinda's husband and manager Tom Overby interjects off camera: 'Yes it is!'] Oh, wait a minute. I made a mistake. Would you consider withdrawing your music from Spotify, as Neil Young did temporarily, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have more recently? Sign up to Saved for Later Catch up on the fun stuff with Guardian Australia's culture and lifestyle rundown of pop culture, trends and tips after newsletter promotion [Tom in background: 'Yes, we may.'] Yes, we may do that. [Raises voice] Manager/husband Tom said yes, we may withdraw my music from Spotify! … I think the new album probably won't be available on there. You have to make a stand and get your message across when this sort of thing crops up. I've enjoyed your Lu's Jukebox series, particularly the album of Tom Petty covers, Runnin' Down a Dream. What's a song you wish you'd written? Oh, so many. That's the thing that's probably the hardest about covering other people's material. So many of Tom Petty's and so many of Bob Dylan's songs I wish I'd written. One of the Tom Petty ones that really struck me was Room At the Top. And of course Runnin' Down a Dream too, it just goes on and on. He was just great. What's the weirdest thing you have done for love? The weirdest thing I've done for love? OK … the weirdest thing I've done for love. That adds a different element … It's not called 10 chaotic questions for nothing! OK, does this count? I got married on stage [to Tom] at First Avenue, the eponymous venue in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Lucinda Williams is touring with Paul Kelly around Australia and New Zealand from 26 August to 12 September. See here for all dates
