Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday spoke over the phone and discussed the ongoing efforts to end the war with Russia and the bilateral relationship.
A readout by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said that Modi reaffirmed 'India's steadfast and consistent position for peaceful settlement of the conflict and support for efforts aimed at earliest restoration of peace'.
'PM reiterated India's commitment to extend all possible support in this regard,' the readout further said.

Separately, Modi shared on X, 'Glad to speak with President Zelenskyy and hear his perspectives on recent developments. I conveyed India's consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict. India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine.'
On his part, Zelenskyy updated Modi about the status of the war and urged him to press Russia to end the war. He also stressed that it was important for countries to limit the purchase of Russian energy.
'I noted that it is necessary to limit the export of Russian energy, particularly oil, to reduce its potential and ability to finance the continuation of this war. It is important that every leader who has tangible leverage over Russia sends the corresponding signals to Moscow,' said Zelenskyy in a post on X.
I had a long conversation with the Prime Minister of India @narendramodi. We discussed in detail all important issues – both of our bilateral cooperation and the overall diplomatic situation. I am grateful to the Prime Minister for his warm words of support for our people.

The conversation comes ahead of a summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Friday. Zelenskyy and European partners have been rallying international support to press Trump to not cut a deal with Putin about the war in Ukraine without Ukraine being at the table.
Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The full-scale invasion came eight years after Russia invaded, occupied, and subsequently annexed Ukraine's Crimea region. During 2014-22, Russia had waged a low-intensity war in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region through proxy groups.
In recent months, Russia has ramped up attacks on Ukraine, hitting civilians with hundreds of missiles and drones on nearly-daily basis. These attacks have come as Putin has found encouragement from Trump's lack of any punitive action. Instead of slapping any sanctions or tariffs on Russia, Trump has slapped India with 50 per cent tariffs for what he said was funding of the Russian war machine.
Zelenskyy seeks India's support in peace efforts
In his call with Modi, Zelenskyy said that India's position would be important in the resolution of the conflict.
'It is important that India is supporting our peace efforts and shares the position that everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine's participation. Other formats will not deliver results,' said Zelenskyy on X.
Zelenskyy further updated Modi about Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, saying that he informed the prime minister about 'Russian attacks on our cities and villages, about yesterday's strike on the bus station in Zaporizhzhia, where dozens of people were injured in a deliberate Russian bombing of a regular urban facility'. He said that such attacks at a time when talks were going on does not show the intention to make peace.

'Instead of demonstrating readiness for a ceasefire, Russia is showing only its desire to continue the occupation and killings,' said Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy and Modi agreed to plan a personal meeting in September during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and to work on an exchange of visits, the Ukrainian president further said.

US designates BLA, Majeed Brigade as Foreign Terrorist Organisation
Agency: Last Updated: August 11, 2025, 23:30 IST Representational image (Image: News18) New York/Washington, Aug 11 (PTI) The US on Monday designated Pakistan-based Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its alias, The Majeed Brigade, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation. BLA was designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) in 2019 following several terrorist attacks. Since then, the group has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including by the Majeed Brigade, the State Department said in a statement. The statement said the State Department is designating BLA and its alias, The Majeed Brigade, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO), and adding the Majeed Brigade as an alias to BLA's previous SDGT designation. The action, it said, 'demonstrates the Trump administration's commitment to countering terrorism". 'Terrorist designations play a critical role in our fight against this scourge and are an effective way to curtail support for terrorist activities," the State Department said. In 2025, the group said it was behind the hijacking of the Jaffar Express train travelling from Quetta to Peshawar in March, which resulted in the deaths of 31 civilians and security personnel, and over 300 passengers being taken hostage. US tariffs on Indian oil imports from Russia a 'big blow' to Moscow: Trump
President Donald Trump on Monday said American tariffs imposed on India for purchasing Russian oil have dealt a "big blow" to Moscow's economy, which is not doing well, as he referred to New Delhi as Russia's "largest or second largest oil buyer". Addressing a press conference at the White House, Trump claimed that Russia's economy has been severely disrupted by the ongoing global pressures due to the imposition of US tariffs on several countries. "I think Russia has to get back into building their country. It's a massive country... They have tremendous potential in Russia to do well. They're not doing well. Their economy is not doing well right now because it's been very well disturbed by this," he said. "Doesn't help when the President of the United States tells their largest or second-largest oil buyer that we're putting a 50 per cent tariff on you if you buy oil from Russia. That was a big blow," Trump said, in an apparent reference to India. Trump has imposed 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India, along with an additional 25 per cent levy on its purchases of Russian oil, resulting in a total of 50 per cent duties. Trump is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, where he expects "constructive conversations". "I thought it was very respectful that the President of Russia is coming to our country, as opposed to us going to his country or even a third-party place. But I think we'll have constructive conversations," he said, adding that he would speak with European leaders after the meeting. Trump also mentioned his plans to engage with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "The next meeting will be with Zelenskyy and Putin, or Zelenskyy and Putin and me. I'll be there if they need but I want to have a meeting set up between the two leaders," he said. Trump also claimed that he has solved five wars so far in his second term in the White House and again claimed he stopped the conflict between India and Pakistan. India has been consistently maintaining that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries. We solved five wars. Pakistan and India, we just solved one, between Azerbaijan and Armenia, he said. On relations with China, Trump remarked, "We've been dealing very nicely with China... They have tremendous tariffs that they're paying to the United States of America. And we'll see what happens. They've been dealing quite nicely. The relationship is very good with President Xi and myself.
