I tried a new VR clay pigeon shooting bar experience and had a blast

Yahoo01-03-2025
FROM boozy bowling alleys to bars with elaborate and often 'junkyard' themed crazy golf courses, just sitting down with a cocktail in hand is becoming a thing of the past.
Experience bars are becoming an increasingly popular attraction, with many popping up across the West Midlands in recent years, however, none quite like this.
Clays Bar opened up in the Picadilly Arcade in Birmingham City Centre at the end of 2024, offering a virtual reality (VR) clay pigeon shooting experience – something I can safely say I never thought of trying before.
When the opportunity arose to head down and try it out for myself, I was immediately intrigued.
Clays uses real decommissioned shotguns in its games (Image: Newsquest) From the moment I stepped through the door, I felt the luxurious vibe of a sophisticated country estate.
The bar area was beautifully decorated, with the countryside-esque colour palate and fake foliage that was dotted throughout really adding to the theme.
The VR experience in the 'Clays Arcade' consists of five quick-fire shooting games, with players using real decommissioned shotguns to play.
After getting used to the surprising heaviness of the props, I can safely say I had a blast.
You get two goes at each game, meaning there's plenty of chance for redemption if you struggle to get to grips with the technique.
The bar was beautifully decorated and had an equally beautiful menu to match (Image: Newsquest) Each game was fun and unique and overall was a great way to have fun with friends with some healthy competition!
If I had one critique, I would say the shooting was over quite quickly, however, it is designed to be 'quick fire' fun after all.
That being said, aside from the technological fun, Clays at its core is also an incredibly enjoyable bar with some delicious food offerings as well.
With a menu centred around small plates designed for sharing, my group and I opted to try the dirty loaded fries, seitan sliders, the breaded lemon sole and a margarita 'pizette', all of which I can say I would order again.
The bar has an extensive menu with wines, beers, spirits and an abundance of cocktails. I liked 'The Ruby' so much I simply had to have two!
The food was also excellent (Image: Newsquest) Overall, Clays proved to be an incredibly enjoyable night out, unlike anything I had done before.
It brings something a little bit different to Birmingham's bar scene that I did not even think was missing!
Olivia was invited down to Clays Bar and was gifted the drinks, food and experience free of charge.

Olivia Dunne following Taylor Swift guide to dating pro athlete

Taylor Swift appeared to have set the standard when it comes to dating professional athletes. Olivia Dunne, a national champion former gymnast at LSU, told Page Six in a recent interview that she's looking to the pop star when it comes to navigating that world. Dunne is in a relationship with Pittsburgh Pirates star Paul Skenes. But unlike Swift and Travis Kelce's start, Dunne and Skenes had some familiarity with each other as they both went to LSU. "(Taylor) has her boyfriend that's a professional athlete and my boyfriend is a professional athlete as well," she told the outlet. "And she has her own success and I have my own success, so I try to look at her perspective on things and how she handles criticism, how she navigates." Dunne said trying to date a pro athletes is its own beast because they're always traveling, among the other challenges that comes with it. In Swift's case, she's presently the most popular recording artist in the world but she did receive some boos from NFL fans at Super Bowl LIX this past February. "I think that she takes the heat a lot worse than I do, because, I mean, the bigger you are, the more people you have trying to tear you down," Dunne added to Page Six. "It just really resonated with me. It's a unique position to be in. And I think for some people, women in sports is uncomfortable for some reason." The dating life is far from the only thing that Dunne looks up to Swift for. She noted that the music icon seems to be dominating nearly every aspect of life at 35 years old. "I admire her in so many different ways. Her work ethic, how much she cares about what she puts out there and how the meaning behind everything is very admirable." Swift appeared on the "New Heights" podcast last week alongside Kelce. The two offered a glimpse into their relationship, which began in 2023.

‘TOAPLAN Arcade Collection Vol 1 & 2' Switch Review: Shmup Excellence

Back in the 80s and 90s, TOAPLAN was one of the top arcade shmup developers in Japan, and these two game collections certainly do justice to that. These two collections are split across 8 games apiece, with Volume 1 containing Flying Shark, Fire Shark, Tiger Heli, Twin Cobra, Out Zone, Fix Eight, Batsugun, and Dogyuun, and Volume 2 including Zero Wing, Hell Fire, Slap Fight, Grind Stormer, Truxton, Truxton 2, Vimana, and Twin Hawk. In addition to local co-op play on some of these games, you also get the different arcade variants released around the world, as well as the Japanese originals. The follow-on console ports of these arcade games are sadly not included, as this is meant as a purely arcade game collection. That aside, TOAPLAN's history was a bumpy one, but it birthed multiple game studios after its closure, most notably that of Cave. This is noteworthy, as much of the 'bullet hell' debauchery Cave became known for is seen in many of these earlier games, which makes this collection fascinating in a historical sense. The other two major additions here are Hellfire and Zero Wing. While the latter is known for its legendarily terrible English localization, both of these were highly innovative horizontal scrolling shmups for their time. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder Hellfire afforded various ways for your ship to fire its ordinance, something that later games like Radiant Silvergun utilized. However, for its time, it was quite a shocking evolution. Zero Wing also had some fascinating elements, namely the tractor beam you could use to grapple enemies to the front of your ship and use as a shield. Again, this was later adopted as a major feature in games like G-Darius. The other great thing about these classic TOAPLAN shmups was that they just looked gorgeous and paved the way for some of the prettiest 2D pixel art games ever created. So this collection has a lot to offer to people, not only those new to shmups, but also veterans who miss playing some of the classics of the genre. As for various quality of life features, you have a rewind option and save states as well as a lot of other customization options, and all the games run very smoothly on the Switch. Overall, TOAPLAN Arcade Collection Vol 1 & 2 covers the heyday of TOAPLAN's arcade shmup output. It's also a comprehensive collection, including the international variants for each of these classic arcade games. Although I suspect Zero Wing's appalling localization will still be a draw for some of the old school fans. TOAPLAN Arcade Collection Vol 1 & Vol 2 Platform: Switch (Reviewed), PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S Developer: Bitwave Games Publisher: Clear River Games Released: 14th August 2025 Price: $34.99 (Each) Score: 8/10 Disclosure: Clear River Games sent me copies of these games for the purposes of this review.
