Tragic soap icons who should never have been killed off as Craig brutally axed
A number of soap icons in Emmerdale, Coronation Street and EastEnders have died in the most tragic circumstances - with fans left devastated by their loss
Soaps like Emmerdale, EastEnders and Coronation Street have given us some of the heartstopping and dramatic deaths. From falling off buildings to being pushed onto train tracks, or dying in a limousine crash, the soaps have seen it all!
After the sad and shocking death of Craig Tinker on Coronation Street, we've looked back at some other heartbreaking deaths from the Dales, from the Cobbles and also from Albert Square.
From the death of fan favourite and Dales favourite Rishi Sharma, to the iconic but devastating double death of Roxy and Ronnie Mitchell, we take a look back at six deaths that should have never happened!
Craig Tinker
Much-loved policeman Craig Tinker - played by Colson Smith - was killed in shocking scenes this week. Craig was murdered by Mick after finding out the truth about his son Brody and the police officer was caught in the firing line.
Speaking about his exit, he said: "When I was in the chat with Kate [Brooks] I'd already braced myself for what was about to happen. I have been in that building since I was 12 years old, so I know exactly how it works.
"I knew that my time was up and I knew that Craig had backed himself into a corner that was going to be really hard to get out of, so I fully expected the chat to go that way. There had been about 20 minutes of Kate talking to me, but we hadn't touched on when or how, or who or what. So I kind of stopped Kate and said, 'Look, I have two questions, and one is when, and two is do I get killed?.'"
He added: "And she kind of like, stopped and stumbled a little bit. And I said, if it makes it easier for you, the right answer for me is yes. Like for me to go, I would want to leave. I would want to die, I would want the door to be shut, so then I can kind of know in my head that Corrie has been this, Corrie has done that, and it is now done, and Craig's journey is over."
Paul Foreman
In tragic scenes, fans bid a heartbreaking goodbye to Paul Foreman, played by Peter Ash. Paul was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in the months before his death and he drew his last breath in sad scenes last year.
Billy didn't make it in time for Paul to die but he believed he had spoken to Paul on the phone, with Bernie having lied that Paul was alive at that moment, leading to fans in tears at what happened.
"With a storyline like that there's a lot of pressure to get it right. Obviously you don't want to misrepresent it or anything, so there is a lot of research being done. It's tough and it's been such a heavy storyline, but it feels good knowing we're getting it right," he said.
"The response to it has been amazing from people living with MND themselves, and also their families responding to it, so it's been amazing in that regard ... I massively thank Iain and Verity [MacLeod] for trusting me with this story. It's a double-edged sword. I always knew it would be an eventual exit unless we were lucky enough to find a cure [for MND] in that time..."
Roxy and Ronnie Mitchell
Still one of the saddest soap deaths ever, Roxy and Ronnie Mitchell died in a swimming pool. The pair died back in 2017 when Ronnie drowned in her wedding dress while trying to save her sister.
Rita Simons recently reprised her role for a brief stint as her daughter Amy Mitchell struggled with her mental health. Speaking about the moment, Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw said of her return: "I'm thrilled to welcome the fabulous Rita back to the iconic role of Roxy Mitchell for these special scenes.
"Although the character was last seen on-screen in January 2017, Roxy still remains a fan favourite. We know our audiences will be thrilled at her short return as Amy seeks some all-important answers from her mum at this point in the storyline."
Kush Kazemi
Kush was died in shocking scenes when his arch nemesis and villain Gray Atkins murdered him. Kush had tried to save Gray's life but the serial killer decided to end things for Kush and pushed him in front of a train.
"I have really enjoyed being part of that final storyline, my time over the six and a half years has culminated in something that people will remember. He's the first character to be killed in this way so it's an EastEnders first, and when you leave a show like this and the door's open, that question can stay over you for a very long time, but this is very definitive, of course, and I'm happy with that," Davood Ghadami - who played Lush - said.
Leyla Harding
A more recent but equally heartbreaking death on Emmerdale was actually part of some wider sad scenes when Leyla was one of the three victims of the harrowing limousine crash in the village lake earlier this year.
Roxy Shahidi exited the soap after several years, with the actress breaking her silence on her exit. She said: "Of course, it's sad to see my character die, and I have loved playing Leyla because she is so funny, camp, and a brilliant character. But at the same time, if I had left it another five years, I might not have felt as excited as I do now.
"I have had a long time to process everything and I am looking forward to my next chapter. I've always wanted to explore other things and now I've got the opportunity."
Rishi Sharma
No one was expecting Rishi to die! An Emmerdale icon, he lost his life when his villainous brother pushed him down the stairs to his death. As his son Jai tied the knot, Rishi was lying dead at the bottom of the stairs.
Bidding his farewell to his character, Bhasker Patel said: "When the producer rang me and said: 'I need to talk to you and we're killing you off because we want a big story and it's going to be a big surprise.'
"Because my 12 years at ITV, they let me do a lot of other work, so I felt a part of ITV, a part of Rishi, but at the same time... I was working in London as well. So when the producer said 'we're going to kill you off', I was like: 'Okay, that part of my life with this guy is over and I'm going to move on.''

EastEnders actress Clair Norris has opened up about her emotional departure from the long-running BBC One soap. The star, 27, who joined the cast in 2017 as Bernie Taylor, is leaving the show after eight years. Her exit follows the gradual departure of the entire Taylor family, prompting show bosses to write out her much-loved character, news that left Clair devastated. Despite the disappointment, Clair shared that she's now looking forward to what the future holds. Speaking to The Sun, she said: 'Obviously it's upsetting but also I'd been there for eight years, which is a long time to play a character, and I have absolutely loved being in the show. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The star, 27, who joined the cast in 2017 as Bernie Taylor, is leaving the show after eight years (pictured on the soap) She added: 'They gave me the opportunity to learn on the job and also now I am able to take that onto other things that I do. 'Of course, it's sad but at the same time, it felt like a natural end, with the Taylors being gone, it kind of felt right. I'm now very excited about the future.' While keeping quiet on the specifics of her exit, which she filmed last month, Clair teased a dramatic departure, hinting that fans may see a return of 'bad Bernie'. When asked whether her on-screen mum Karen (played by Lorraine Stanley) might return, Clair responded coyly 'Maybe, maybe not'. Clair, who joined her EastEnders co-stars in celebrating their eight wins at the British Soap Awards, revealed she is now figuring out her next steps. However, she added that she's 'open to anything,' and said that exploring theatre or appearing in a drama would be 'great'. Last month, it was confirmed that the star will exit the soap later this year. A source told The Sun: 'Every time a soap gets a new boss they want to make their own changes - it's nothing personal. Speaking at the awards, she said: 'Obviously it's upsetting but also I'd been there for eight years, which is a long time to play a character, and I have absolutely loved being in the show' 'The writing has been on the wall for Bernie for some time so it wasn't really a surprise to Clair. 'She was the last Taylor standing and it's time to close the chapter on them and let Clair go on to do other things.' EastEnders said in their official comment: 'We can confirm that Clair will be leaving EastEnders later this year and we wish her all the best for the future.' The BBC soap isn't the only programme that Clair has starred in over the years. During her five-month break between October 2021 and March 2022, she was able to focus on some other projects. In 2022 she took on the role of a drunk girl in the sitcom Bloods. The same year she also played Kerry in the drama Tell Me Everything. The star has also played herself in a number of shows including The Weakest Link in 2021. She also starred in her own Panorama documentary called Obesity: Who Cares if I'm Bigger? In 2022.

Love Island star Dani Dyer and footballer Jarrod Bowen tied the knot with their nearest and dearest in attendance at their lavish wedding Danny Dyer was in tears as he walked his daughter, Dani Dyer, down the aisle as she tied the knot with footballer Jarrod Bowen. Love Island star Dani and Jarrod got married in the sunshine at a gorgeous setting in Buckinghamshire, surrounded by their nearest and dearest. She looked out of this world in a simple off-the-shoulder white gown with her hair tied into a classy updo. In a video shared by the brand that created her wedding dress, Suzanne Neville, Rivals actor and proud father, Danny, was seen turning around to see his daughter in the gown for the very first time. The Football Factor star was overwhelmed as he went to hug and kiss her. Danny was beaming with joy as he walked his daughter down the aisle, with Jarrod tearing up as he saw his new wife. Danny gave his son-in-law a quick hug as Jarrod leaned on his shoulder in tears. The camera then panned to the wedding guests while the happy couple said their I do's. EastEnders icon Danny, along with the bridesmaids, wiped away his tears as the couple exchanged their vows. The video included their celebrations, with Dani and Danny sharing an enthusiastic dance in a glass building. After a picture-perfect ceremony, it seems dad Danny set the tone for the rest of the night. An X-rated footie chant about the couple broke out with the former EastEnder leading it. Footage from the newlyweds reception emerged on social media showing family and friends serenading the couple with West Ham fans' favourite chant: "Bowen's on fire... and he's s******* Dani Dyer." Guests swirled white serviettes above their heads as it was belted out inside a glass marquee as the couple giggled along. To really get into the party spirit, Dani decided to change out of her floor-length gown into something more dancefloor ready. In the lead up to the wedding, Danny said: 'I have met every single boyfriend that has walked through my door - and then she brings home the West Ham captain. "I have gone from the lying scum, and I hate them, to a man who I would not mind tonguing myself! A strong man. If he lent in I would put my lips on this geezer. 'He is just, as a father and joking aside, he took her on with a 14 month old son and that says a lot about a man I will tell you. He is amazing. I can't wait to give her away. What a touch. But if he was to make a move on me before… "I think I'm in love with him, slightly. He's an incredible person. I just want someone to love my daughters the way I do. I want them to worship them and look after them. Let me tell you that. I love him.'

Fife neighbours scoop cash jackpot on BBC quiz show Bridge of Lies
A team of neighbours from a Fife town has won the cash jackpot on the hit BBC quiz show Bridge of Lies. The team of four from Coaltown of Wemyss, scooped the £4,575 prize money in a nail-biting finale on Wednesday. The contestants included former Courier reporter Craig Smith and his wife, Lyndsey, along with neighbours, Nicola Forrest and Kenny Rodger. Contestants compete against the clock using their general knowledge, strategic skills, and often luck, to spot correct answers as well as lies in order to cross the bridge. The prize money mounts up depending on the number of players who successfully make it across. The contestants then team up to take on the 'final crossing' challenge. If they successfully make it across by answering a series of questions correctly, they win the prize money accumulated during the show. The quiz is hosted by actor Ross Kemp, famous for his role as Grant Mitchell in Eastenders. Tackling questions on subjects including holidays, theatre, names and the Stephen Spielberg films, all four made it across the bridge. This allowed them to go for the £4,575 prize pot working as a team to navigate across the bridge. With two of the team already out before completing the task, it was Lyndsey's turn to face the final question. And it was an agonising few seconds before host, Kemp, revealed that she was correct and they had scooped the prize money. The four hugged and cheered as they were congratulated by Kemp before revealing they would use the money on a group holiday ot Turkey. Speaking after the show was broadcast, Craig said he'd always wanted to be a contestant on a TV quiz show. He said: 'I applied initially one night, probably after a bottle of wine, thinking it wouldn't go anywhere but they gave us a call back and it went from there really. 'I've always liked the show as it's usually on around teatime in the background, and you end up just shouting at the screen. 'So I thought 'why not give it a go?' The 43-year-old former Courier reporter said he couldn't believe it when he found out his application had been successful. He added: 'It was filmed last September, so it's been around nine months to wait for it to come on. 'We had a brilliant time at the studios in Glasgow, and Ross Kemp is a really nice guy as well. 'We were last on the day to film, so it went on until about 8pm. 'None of us could watch it go out live, so we all gathered together to watch it on iPlayer with a wee glass of fizz to celebrate.' Craig said that the money had been put towards a holiday in Turkey in July for the team as well as several other Coaltown of Wemyss neighbours. The episode of Brdge of Lies is available to watch now on BBC iplayer.
