Ex-NBA Star Gilbert Arenas Arrested For Hosting Illegal High-Stakes Poker Games
Ex-NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas was arrested for allegedly running illegal high-stakes poker games at his Encino mansion, facing conspiracy and illegal gambling charges.
Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas was arrested on Wednesday alongside five others for allegedly running illegal 'high-stakes" poker games at his mansion in the Los Angeles suburbs, according to US prosecutors.
The 43-year-old Arenas, who was a star player for the Washington Wizards, rented out his luxury home in Encino 'for the purposes of hosting high-stakes illegal poker games" from September 2021 to July 2022, as stated in an indictment unsealed in Los Angeles.
The indictment also claims that the gatherings involved young women who were tipped to 'serve drinks, provide massages, and offer companionship" to the players.
Arenas faces charges of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, operating an illegal gambling business, and making false statements to federal investigators.
During his arraignment in federal court in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, he pleaded not guilty and was released on a $50,000 bond.
US Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Chooljian set the trial date for September 23.
Among those arrested on Wednesday was 49-year-old Yevgeni Gershman, identified as a suspected organized crime figure from Israel.
Gershman and the other three defendants allegedly managed the illegal 'Pot Limit Omaha" poker games, charging players a 'rake," which is either a cut of each pot or a fee per hand.
The women servers were reportedly required to pay part of their tips to the organisers, who also hired chefs, valets, and armed guards.
The indictment includes alleged text messages between Arenas and Kats discussing the arrangements for the games.
Authorities reveal that in November 2021, Arenas texted Kats a picture of a poker table with 'ARENAS POKER CLUB" printed on it, along with an image of a basketball player wearing an 'Arenas" jersey.
If convicted, the defendants face a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for each count.
Arenas, a three-time NBA All-Star, last played in the league in 2012 and later joined the Shanghai Sharks in China for the 2012-13 season.
In December 2009, he was involved in a notorious incident with his Washington teammate Javaris Crittenton, where both brought guns into the locker room. Arenas asserts their dispute began over a card game.
He pleaded guilty to felony gun possession and was suspended for the final 50 games of the 2009-2010 NBA season.

How Australia Cricketer's Action Turned Party In Yuvraj Singh's Room 'Dead Quiet' During 2011 WC: 'Bollywood Celebs...'
John Hastings recalls the moment when he had to call the hotel reception to tell them he will fix the damage caused in Yuvraj Singh's room. In a room full of people including international cricketers and Bollywood stars, a young Australia fast bowler's attempt to play his favourite songs at a party hosted by Yuvraj Singh resulted in a broken table and a pin-drop silence. The anecdote, narrated by the guilty party himself, is from during the 2011 ODI World Cup held in the Indian subcontinent. The then 25-year-old John Hastings was among the Aussie stars invited to attend a party at Yuvraj's suite which the former fast bowler says was bigger than his house back home. 'It was one of those ones where we'd obviously had a few and I think you know we'd obviously been invited up to Yuvi's (Yuvraj Singh) room and walked in and there was a suite. It was massive. It was as big as my house over here. And I remember looking around, I just jeez there's so many people in here," Hastings said on LiSTNR sport. While the size and crowd impressed the young Aussie, the music didn't. 'What's going on with this music? So, I was fiddling around with the laptop trying to get some of my playlist on and I sat on the edge of this…ledge that had a phone on there. There was a laptop, I sat on it and boom off it came down on the floor and I just remember everyone just stopped and looked and went silent, dead quiet, pin could drop," Hastings remembered. The situation could have easily intimidated Hastings, but he recalls keeping his calm and calling the reception to inform them of the damage he had caused. However, the phone in the room had been damaged as well. 'I just went, 'What am I going to do here? I'm a young kid.' It's Yuvraj Singh's room. There are so many people here. There's probably Bollywood celebrities everywhere, and I just went, 'Right, stay calm,' and I went to the phone, which was already out off the wall, and I'd seen the cord be ripped out of the wall. So, I just thought, I'll just make sure that I've made this right. And there was no one on the end of the line. So, I picked up the phone. I said, 'Reception, yep. John Hastings, I just want to make sure that there's a bit of damage in Mr. Singh's room. I'll make sure I fix it up. I'm in the room such and such.' And everyone was like, 'Well done, mate. That's brilliant.' And everyone just kicked on, played on," Hastings said. 'I actually went down to reception to make sure that I could rectify the situation, but there was never another word. So, happy days. I didn't have to pay for any damage and we had a really good night," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
