Magic Round fears knocked back after grim NRL scenes in Broncos victory
The general manager of Suncorp Stadium has moved to allay fears around Magic Round after the playing surface looked grim following the weekend's action at the ground. The Broncos left NRL fans in awe last week having blitzed the previously undefeated Bulldogs side at home in the wet after the home side reeled off a 42-18 victory.
Reporter Phil Rothfield raised concerns during the game as divots could be seen around the ground only a week out from the women's State of Origin, which will kick-off Magic Round on Thursday. "Worried about Magic Round coping with 8 games," he wrote. "More rain in Brisbane tomorrow. A Super rugby game, Brisbane Roar soccer, women's Origin all b4 Magic Round."
Unfortunately the wet weather saw the players chop up the field leaving the Suncorp playing surface a mess leading into a Super Rugby and A-League game. This raised big concerns from the rugby league community with nine games taking shape on the surface next week during Magic Round.
Suncorp's surface has come under question in the past leading into Magic Round where all teams play their fixtures in Brisbane. The event brings in an estimated $120 million for the Queensland Government due to tourism and other factors and is considered one of the biggest fixtures on the NRL calendar.
Appearing on SEN Radio to speak to Greg Alexander and Andrew Voss, Suncorp ground manager Matt Oliver claimed the playing surface did take a hit over the weekend with the wet weather causing havoc. "We had a torrential downfall...which did a fair bit of damage. And it was compounded with the two other codes playing on the same weekend. She was looking pretty sorry for herself on Saturday afternoon. But it is all part and parcel of a very busy stadium," Oliver said on Tuesday.
When asked how they were going about resurrecting the playing surface, Oliver was confident the staff could get the grass back into top shape ahead of the women's State of Origin this Thursday. "Works are ongoing, we are doing approximately 50 per cent of the league field. The high-traffic areas...this is all part and parcel of what we do. A tight turn around such as this is nothing unusual for us. We are fully confident we will be looking great come Thursday night."
Back in 2023, NRL fans had similar concerns around Suncorp Stadium. Former Broncos player Denan Kemp questioned what has changed at the ground having suggested the surface chops up easier in recent years.
"It's weird because there is usually a lot of rain early in the year," Kemp said on SEN Radio. "Suncorp was one of those grounds that used to hold up really, really well...I don't know is it a cheaper grass they are using? I have never seen it chop up, as quick as it chops up now."
The Cronulla Sharks will open NRL Magic Round against the Eels on Friday night with Craig Fitzgibbon's men coming off a five-day turn around. This is in contrast to the Eels who had the bye last round. The Broncos will host the big clash on the weekend when they take on reigning champions the Penrith Panthers.

DeMarcus Ware Believes Brian Schottenheimer Could Be the Spark the Cowboys Need
DeMarcus Ware Believes Brian Schottenheimer Could Be the Spark the Cowboys Need originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Hall of Fame outside linebacker and Dallas Cowboys legend DeMarcus Ware believes Brian Schottenheimer is the ideal leader to push Dallas closer to its long-awaited sixth Super Bowl. Advertisement Ware acknowledged that Schottenheimer has the ability to change the Dallas Cowboys' culture while also keeping Owner, General Manager, and President Jerry Jones focused on what matters most. 'I think a guy like Schottenheimer coming in and reminding [Jones] what's the most important thing, and that's his family,' Ware told 'The Invasion' podcast. 'Sometimes you need reminders and someone underneath you to say 'hey, let's try this' and hit a little button in [Jones] that will sort of get that fire going in you again.' Going into his first season as the Cowboys head coach, Schottenheimer has made an intentional effort to build a strong chemistry with each player. Ware recalled a similar atmosphere and emphasis on culture during his Super Bowl-winning run with the Denver Broncos. Advertisement 'That's like really cool to be able to — [Schottenheimer] bringing in that family aspect because it's been gone. Even when I was there, it wasn't there a lot," Ware said. 'When you can bring that family aspect, I know what it felt like in Denver when we did it. We won a championship because it was like, when them doors were closed, it was all family inside and I knew exactly why that guy was playing and what made him tick.' If Schottenheimer can ignite an internal fire not just in the players, but throughout the organization, the Cowboys may be in store for a special season. J.K. Dobbins seeking Super Bowl with Broncos after 'weird' exit from Chargers
J.K. Dobbins seeking Super Bowl with Broncos after 'weird' exit from Chargers The Los Angeles Chargers placed an unrestricted free agent tender on J.K. Dobbins in April, creating an unconventional offseason for the running back. After receiving that tender, Dobbins had until training camp to strike a deal with another club. If he did not reach an agreement before July 22, the Chargers would have had exclusive negotiating rights with Dobbins, and his tender was only worth $1.64 million. After signing a one-year deal with a division rival, Dobbins has an opportunity to earn up to $5.25 million with the Denver Broncos this fall. Dobbins is now set to return to L.A. in Week 3, and then face his old team again when the Broncos host the Chargers in Week 18 (view the full schedule). Will he have a chip on his shoulder going up against his old club? 'I always have a chip on my shoulder, but that was a little weird," Dobbins said after his first practice in Denver. "It's a business. It's for my agent to handle. Good luck to [the Chargers]. I'm a Bronco now. They have to see me twice a year. That's my thoughts on it. I'm going to have the chip on my shoulder, of course, but I'm here. "I'm worried about winning more than just beating — I don't want to just beat the Chargers. I want to go on and I want to get a ring. I've been in the playoffs every year I've played, so I'm tired of losing in them. That's my goal. Bring a Super Bowl to the city and just be a blessing to the community, as well." Dobbins totaled 1,058 yards from scrimmage and scored 13 touchdowns in L.A. last season. He will now join rookie RJ Harvey in Denver's backfield. Dobbins is entering his sixth season in the NFL. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Broncos roster: OLB Nik Bonitto (No. 15) aims for another big season in contract year
Broncos roster: OLB Nik Bonitto (No. 15) aims for another big season in contract year Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fourth-year outside linebacker Nik Bonitto, No. 15. Before the Broncos: Nik Bonitto played for four years at the University of Oklahoma from 2018-21. Over his four-year tenure, Bonitto earned three honors: AP third-team All-American (2021), second-team All-Big 12 (2021) and second-team All-American (2020). Over 40 games played, Bonitto recorded 117 tackles (68 solo, 49 assisted, 35 tackles for loss), 18.5 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and seven pass deflections. Bonitto was selected in the second round (64th overall) of the 2022 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. Broncos tenure: Bonitto had a rocky rookie season, playing in 15 games, only starting one game and totaling 14 tackles (six solo, eight assisted, one for loss), one forced fumble and 1.5 sacks, hardly the type of year the Broncos were hoping for from their highest draft pick in 2022. Bonttio took a step forward in 2023, a year in which he started four games. Bonitto upped his sack total to 8.0, made 30 tackles (23 solo, seven assisted, 13 tackles for loss), two pass deflections and one forced fumble. If 2023 was a step forward, 2024 was an explosion, and one every bit as much as the Broncos were hoping for when they drafted Bonitto in 2022. Bonitto started 15 games, totaling 48 tackles (33 solo, 15 assisted, 16 tackles for loss, 24 QB hits), two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception. Bonitto's fumble recovery and interception both went for touchdowns. Bonitto's huge jump earned him a Pro Bowl nod, as well as second-team All-Pro honors. Chances to make the 53-man roster: 100 percent. Bonitto had a breakout year in 2024, and is in the middle of contract extension talks with the Denver front office to keep him with the Broncos for the foreseeable future. Bonitto is primed for another big year in 2025, and Broncos Country is excited to see what the future holds. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.
