Cubs' Craig Counsell Makes Brutally Honest Brewers Admission as Division Gap Grows

However, they have since lost the lead as the Milwaukee Brewers have gone on a historic 14-game win streak. The Cubs entered Sunday trailing the Brewers by nine games in the division. The Brewers have put together two separate win streaks of at least 11 games. The Cubs had hopes of winning the division and Craig Counsell got brutally honest about the Brewers stopping them. "The job is to try to win the division. That's kind of the ultimate goal. They're making that really difficult," Counsell said before the Cubs' Saturday game. "They're making that part of the goal really hard to get to." CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - AUGUST 06: Craig Counsell #11 of the Chicago Cubs looks on against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field on August 06, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs do not have to win the division to play in October, but the Brewers could force them into a tough path into the postseason. The Cubs entered Sunday with a 4 1/2-game lead for the top wild card spot. They will have a chance to cut into the Brewers' lead with five games against them in the coming week. The Brewers are baseball's hottest team and have the best record in the league as well. Obviously, Counsell was the longtime manager for the Brewers and his decision to join the Cubs was highly controversial. While his former team looks like a World Series contender with a lower payroll, the Cubs have struggled greatly as of late. The Cubs missed the postseason last year while the Brewers won the division. The Cubs invested heavily in Counsell and acquired Kyle Tucker in the offseason. Losing the division again would be a tough pill to swallow. More MLB: Dodgers' Dave Roberts Breaks Silence On Viral Beef With Padres' Mike Shildt

Dodgers' Blake Snell Has Padres Message After Taking Back First Place

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. This weekend has so far served as a reminder for both top teams in the National League West. By winning both of the first two games of their rivalry series, the Los Angeles Dodgers have taken back first place in the National League West from the San Diego Padres. After the Padres made up 10 games in the standings in just over a month, the Dodgers have seemingly let them know that they still intend to keep their top dog status. And they had a former Padre deliver the message on Saturday night. Former Padres Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, who signed a five-year contract with the Dodgers in December, threw six scoreless innings in Los Angeles' 6-0 win at Dodger Stadium on Saturday. (Photo by)After allowing four hits to the first five batters he faced, Snell allowed just one hit the rest of the way, striking out three and walking two. His ERA now sits at 1.80 through five starts as a Dodger. "I was there for three years; I know this team really well," Snell said, per Andrés Soto of "But there was a lot of stuff that I was learning just throughout the game and then I kind of settled in once I understood what they were trying to do." What's more, Snell still wasn't satisfied with his performance after keeping his former team off the scoreboard and snatching back the lead in the division by one game entering Sunday's finale. "The results have been good, but there's things I need to do better," Snell said, per Soto. "It can't be this way forever. If I'm not efficient, dominating the zone, the shapes of pitches aren't where I want them. The results are good, but I'm chasing something different than that. So I got to get better." Much has been made of the Padres' super-bullpen coming out of the trade deadline, seemingly making them a tough matchup for the Dodgers and any potential playoff opponent. But don't forget about the rotation the Dodgers might be able to toss at San Diego in a short series, consisting of Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Clayton Kershaw and Tyler Glasnow. The back-and-forth battle continues, but it's hard not to give the defending World Series champions the slight upper hand.
