A mother is warning families to check their children's social media after her eight-year-old daughter was a victim of sextortion at her Edinburgh school.Parents at Gilmerton Primary have been contacted by the school informing them a person has been impersonating pupils on Snapchat.The headteacher has written to families urging them to check all pupils' social media accounts and to screen shot, block and report anything suspicious.Police are investigating several reports of indecent images being shared online in Edinburgh.
The Edinburgh parent has posted a warning on a community forum urging families to be aware someone has been making fake accounts of her eight-year-old daughter and others, demanding embarrassing videos and pictures, hacking their phones and posting everything online.Head teacher Alet Bouwer wrote: "Dear Gilmerton families, I am writing to inform you that we are aware of an ongoing situation with regards to a person impersonating pupils on social media (specifically Snapchat)."We are working very closely with our colleagues from the Child Protection team within Police Scotland on this matter."Can I direct you to the page on our website with useful information to keep your children safe online. Please do check all your children's social media accounts."Screen shot, block and report any suspicious accounts and report this to Police Scotland. We are also more than happy to answer any questions and signpost families to information about online safety."A Police Scotland spokesman said: "An investigation is under way after we received several reports in February 2025 relating to indecent images being shared on an online platform in Edinburgh.'"Inquiries are ongoing and we are working closely with a number of partner agencies."A city of Edinburgh Council spokeswoman said it would be inappropriate to comment while an investigation by Police Scotland is ongoing. A Snapchat spokesman said: "Any sexual exploitation of young people is horrific and illegal, and our hearts go out to the victims in this case."If we are made aware of such activity, whether through our proactive detection efforts or confidential in-app reporting tools, we remove it, lock the violating account, and report it to authorities."Snapchat is for people aged 13 and over and we have extra safeguards in place to prevent strangers from being able to easily find or search for teens."Our Family Centre also lets parents see who their teen is friends with and talking to on Snapchat."

More info An Edinburgh authorised firearms officer is taking legal action against Police Scotland - claiming he was unfairly suspended after an "incident" was filmed and posted on TikTok. Steven Jones, 35, gave evidence at the Edinburgh Employment Tribunal on Monday, June 9 where he is suing on the grounds of sex discrimination. Mr Jones says his behaviour was branded as "misogynistic" and he suffered detriment due to a fear among Police Scotland management that the armed response unit is perceived as having a "boys' club mentality". The court heard details of the incident which took place on March 1, 2024. It concerns a video posted to TikTok by Scottish singer Tallia Storm. Footage shows Mr Jones and his partner exiting their marked police vehicle on Edinburgh's Cowgate to snap a photo with Ms Storm. Mr Jones can be seen taking the photograph while his partner poses with the media personality. The court heard that Mr Jones' superiors "chastised" him following the incident. Mr Jones claimed they described his conduct as "mysogynistic". The officer also said he was criticised following the public's "negative" response to the TikTok and for parking the police vehicle on a road with "heavy" pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Mr Jones believed he was punished due to "past instances of misogyny" in the firearms unit, which he felt constitutes sex discrimination. He claimed senior management at Police Scotland were wary the armed response unit is perceived as having a "lads' mentality". He said: "Because of the word "misogyny," it made me feel it was because I as a male interacting with a female that it was viewed through that lens. If a member of the other sex had that interaction, it wouldn't have happened." Employment solicitor Mr Merck, representing Mr Jones, made reference to a prominent case where female firearms officer Rhona Malone was paid nearly £1m after an employment tribunal found she had been victimised on the basis of sex by Police Scotland. Mr Jones believed Ms Malone's case informed the reason his behaviour was branded as "misogynistic". Mr Jones added: "It really surprised me. I was extremely upset and shocked because I knew I had to disclose to my partner what I had been accused of and explain to my family." On March 1, 2024 Mr Jones and his colleague were on "parliament duty", requiring them to patrol the streets surrounding Scottish Parliament including the Cowgate and Grassmarket. While driving on Cowgate, the pair encountered a large crowd of pedestrians. Mr Jones, who was driving, slowed the vehicle to assess whether the scene required intervention. He claimed he then noticed Ms Storm in the crowd. Mr Jones said: "I knew who she was due to the publicity and her being the capital DJ host at the time. She was on the side of trams and buses." He and his partner exited their vehicle - which housed firearms inside a locked compartment - for around one minute. Mr Jones added: "It could've been less than that." The officer claimed Ms Storm was "ecstatic" by the photo op and stated: "There was no rude behaviour or catcalling. I present myself courteously and was calm in the situation. We engaged in conversation to ascertain that a Q&A was being held. It looked like she was making her way over. We very quickly introduced ourselves, it was a polite interaction." The officer also said he and his partner continued to maintain security of their vehicle during the incident. Mr Jones claimed he later faced suspension, a sanction he felt was not commensurate to his actions. He said: "It is our job to engage with people. We don't police with fear, we police by good interactions with the public. The last thing I'd ever want is the public to fear the police and to fear me. I always speak to people as a human being. I meet them where they are. Mr Jones joined Police Scotland in March 2017. In June 2023, he completed authorised firearms officer training. The court heard of his ambition to become a national firearms instructor and how Mr Jones claimed he was repeatedly nudged to pursue a role in counterterrorism. However, since the incident the officer said he has been demoted to an office role dealing with "low-level daily calls" whereas he was formerly tasked with "very high risk incidents" with "very high levels of decision making" on the firearms unit. The five-day proceedings began on Monday, June 9 and are presided over by Employment Judge Amanda Jones. The tribunal continues.

'Jealous' husband stabbed wife as she walked baby after stalking her, court told
A 'violent, jealous, controlling' husband stalked his estranged wife to a women's refuge before stabbing her to death as she pushed their baby in a pram, a court has heard. Habibur Masum, 26, launched a 'ferocious' knife attack on Kulsuma Akter, 27, after confronting her on a street in Bradford, Bradford Crown Court was told. The jury heard Ms Akter had fled her home in Oldham to a hostel in Bradford 'to escape his violence, jealousy and controlling behaviour'. Masum, from Burnley, had previously been arrested over claims he had threatened to kill Ms Akter and was banned from contacting her when he attacked her on 6 April last year. Opening the case on Monday, prosecutor Steven Wood KC said Masum had tracked Ms Akter to Bradford before trying to trick her into leaving the hostel by pretending to be from a GP's surgery and offering her fake appointments. The court heard he confronted Ms Akter as she walked with a friend while pushing the couple's seven-month-old son in a pram. Mr Wood said she was shocked Masum was there as she believed he was in Spain at the time. CCTV footage played in court showed Masum walking alongside Ms Akter before he stopped her, spun her and the pram around and pulled a knife from his jacket. He then stabbed her. Mr Wood said Masum launched a "ferocious and deadly attack" on his wife as she lay on the ground. 'When the defendant had finished stabbing her, as a final act of sheer gratuitous violence, he kicks Kulsuma before moving away, but not before ensuring that he disposed of the knife,' he said. The court heard Ms Akter suffered multiple stab wounds to her body and face, including a wound to the neck which partly cut her windpipe and severed her left jugular vein. Mr Wood told jurors: 'The [prosecution] say this was cold-blooded, calculated, pre-meditated murder. 'Why would the defendant take a knife with him to meet his estranged wife unless he planned to use it?' Previous threat to kill The court heard Masum had previously threatened to kill Ms Akter and in November 2023 attacked her over a 'completely innocuous' message she received from a male colleague. 'In what you may think was a chilling prediction of what he was to do in April of the following year, he told Kulsuma, 'I am going to murder you, and the police will be taking me',' Mr Wood said. The next day he threatened her with a knife, prompting a female family member to call the police. Masum was arrested that night, jurors heard. The court heard Masum was charged with two offences of assault and one of making a threat to kill. Jurors heard Ms Akter told a social worker from Oldham Council she 'believed that one day her husband would kill her', asking if her son could stay with her sister-in-law and brother 'when this day comes'. She was moved to accommodation in Bradford in January 2024, but the court heard Masum contacted her on Snapchat, threatening to kill her brothers. The jury was told the refuge contacted the police but Masum sent her a video the next day of Bradford railway station, with a message saying he had 'come to her town'. He later sent her a photo of the refuge with a message saying: 'I know that you are living in this place. I knew from the first day you moved here. 'If I had any wish to kill you, I could have from the first day. You do not know what you have lost but one day you will understand. Nobody will love you like I do.' Ms Akter's social worker arranged for her to be rehoused and she was due to move on 8 April but died two days before the transfer. After stabbing Ms Akter, Masum left her and his son at the scene and got on a bus, Mr Wood said. He later travelled almost 200 miles south to Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and was arrested in the early hours of 9 April in a car park near Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he had attended to be treated for 'lock jaw'. Masum denies murdering Ms Akter but has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and possession of a knife. He also denies two charges of assault, one count of making threats to kill and one charge of stalking. The trial continues.

Morrisons petrol station robbed as man rushed to hospital in late-night incident
The petrol station on Lindsayfield Avenue in East Kilbride has been robbed as police launch a manhunt. A Scots petrol station has been cordoned off by police following a late-night robbery which left a man in hospital. Police Scotland have launched a manhunt after the Morrisons supermarket fuel station on Lindsayfield Avenue, East Kilbride, was robbed in the early hours of this morning (Monday June 9). Emergency personnel received a call about the incident at around 12.15am and crews raced to the scene. Upon attending, a male member of staff was rushed to hospital. The force have since opened a probe to find those responsible for the raid. Images from the scene show the petrol station taped off by police with cop cars still in attendance. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'An investigation is underway following a robbery at a fuel station on Lindsayfield Avenue, East Kilbride. " Police received a call around 12.15am on Monday, June 9, 2025. " Emergency services attended and a male member of staff was taken to hospital. " Enquiries are ongoing to locate those responsible.' Last month, in a separate incident, we reported that a crowd of masked youths threw a lit flare into a petrol station shop in a shocking rampage in Wishaw. Up to 25 yobs descended on the forecourt of the petrol station on Overtown Road in the Lanarkshire town at around 5:50pm on May 13. CCTV captured the gang, a number of whom wore balaclavas and dark clothing, as they launched the missile. Staff members and a number of customers were inside the petrol station shop during the attack. Police were called to the disturbance but the youths had fled the scene. It is understood the group had earlier been at Newmains United Community FC ground before they made their way to the petrol station. Cooper Brothers Ltd, who own the premises, took to social media for help identifying the culprits. A statement read: "A group of over 25 youths entered our petrol station forecourt and lit a flare. It was then thrown into the shop, with staff and customers still in the store, causing smoke and burn damage to the floor and some stock. "Thankfully, no fuel was ignited. "The group had been at the Newmains United Community FC ground beforehand, with some claiming to be 'Ultras' from the club. Some individuals were wearing black or red-and-black balaclavas. "We've handed over full CCTV to Police Scotland, but any additional information could really help. The petrol station shared CCTV of the moment black smoke filled the petrol station ship after the pyrotechnic was thrown inside. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 5.50pm on Tuesday, 13 May, 2025, we received a report of a disturbance involving a group of youths at a premises on Overtown Road, Wishaw.
