Price lifts lid on Littler and Humphries' World Cup of Darts nightmare

Gerwyn Price reckons England's shock World Cup of Darts demise was down to Luke Littler and Luke Humphries not having the same team ethic as other countries in the event. Northern Ireland were crowned World Cup winners for the first time on Sunday night, beating Wales 10-9 in an epic final in Frankfurt. Daryl Gurney and Josh Rock got the better of Price and Jonny Clayton in a final which most expected to feature the English team of Humphries and Littler. However, the top two players in the world rankings were downed by Germany in their first game, beaten 8-4 by the home nation in a big shock in the last 16. Price was asked about the need for friendship and a connection between the pair to achieve success in the World Cup of Darts and he suggested this is where the English dream team went wrong. 'I think you need a connection, I think you need to have that camaraderie off the stage and have that connection,' the Iceman said after defeat in the final. 'When we all turned up…and I'm not just saying this because they lost…the only two players who didn't turn up together, didn't sit together, didn't play as a team…I'm not saying who they are, but they didn't win their first game. 'You need it. You need to turn up as a team, practice together, sit together, it's a team ethic and it didn't show with England and it showed on the board. 'They're great players individually, but you need to be a team. You need that team ethic, you need to be together as a team all the way though, but it didn't happen. 'I wanted them to do well but they didn't. I'm not just saying that, I wanted them to do well but they were rubbish.' The Northern Irish pair downed England's conquerors in the semi-finals, thrashing the Germans 8-1 before their brilliant tussle with the Welsh in the final. In a deciding leg of stunning quality Gurney landed a 180 before Rock hit a 171 to leave just 16, which Gurney nailed to wrap it up in just 11 darts. The 39-year-old has won major titles before, but not since the 2018 Players Championship Finals and he admitted that he felt his trophy-lifting days were over. 'This is better. I said in my interview yesterday, if we could win this it would be better than any individual competition I've won,' he said. 'I'm a very proud Northern Irishman today. So pleased to play with Josh. We said we could do damage, we've done damage. We came, we won, we conquered. 'We're not finished yet. I believed I was finished, that's why I'm so emotional because I thought I was probably done as a PDC winner but Josh gave me the belief.' More Trending 24-year-old Rock turned in a sublime performance over the piece in Germany, with PremiumDartsData revealing his tournament average to be 102.42. 'That was probably the best World Cup final there's ever been,' he said. 'That was just phenomenal.' Rock is still searching for his own first major TV title, but reckons this could be the springboard to launch him to individual glory. 'I'm hoping so,; he said. 'I believe in myself that it will happen.' Tyrrell Hatton slams rough justice at unfair Oakmont as golf star wails 'that's going to hurt for a long time'

The English star suffered an horrendous break at key time as he came up just short at US Open Tyrrell Hatton saluted amazing Bob MacIntyre as he admitted his own Oakmont pain will hurt for a long time. The English star felt aggrieved at some brutal rough justice dished out in the epic and gut-wrenching final stages of his quest for a maiden Major. ‌ Hatton 's brilliant play put him into contention for US Open glory during the frantic finale before a horrendous late setback on the penultimate hole of the tournament killed his dreams. ‌ He offered huge and classy respect for the way American JJ Spaun subsequently finished the job with his stunning long-range putt on the last, a strike that also denied runner-up MacIntyre. That moment didn't detract from the Scot's mighty showing or his own class as he also applauded the finale from the clubhouse and his European Ryder Cup team-mate said: 'He [MacIntyre] is an amazing player. He won in Canada and Scottish Open last year. Both events, with his dad on the bag in Canada and winning his home Open was pretty epic and cool to see. "He's a great guy and someone that I have a lot of respect for. He's had an amazing week. I'm sure he'll be disappointed with how he's just missed out, but he's played amazing. He had a fantastic week finishing second on his own. You always want to win, but I guess for Bob, he can walk off with his head held high. I think that's the reaction that every player would have for JJ's putt there, just respect and what a way to finish.' But, while completely gracious towards the top-two finishers, Hatton was less complimentary about the rough patch and sickened at the way it unfolded for him in the closing stages. The Londoner was in the tie for the lead at one-over with two holes to go before he missed the green to the right of the driveable par-four 17th. What happened next offered a world of frustration and agony as, instead of rolling into the bunker, his ball got snagged in the wet rough from the rain which had just delayed play and stuck on the downslope leaving him no chance. Hatton said: 'The finish at the end hurts a lot. If you're going to miss the 17th with that pin, you have to miss it right. I did my bit. I feel like I was extremely unlucky to finish where it did. What happened on 17 is going to hurt a lot for a long time. It was the first time I've been in contention in a major and that was exciting, and unfortunately, I feel like through a bit of bad luck I had momentum taken away from me and ultimately ended up not being my day.' Hatton was asked the specify the exacts of the bad luck and initially responded: 'Why do you think it was bad luck? What kind of question is that?' Pushed for the detail, he then said: 'You think stopping on the downslope in the rough? Like, that's ridiculous. As I said, if you're going to miss that green, you have to miss it right in the bunker. I've obviously not a decent tee shot. That would have been on the green, but I feel I've missed it in the right spot and got punished which, ultimately, I don't think ends up being fair. 'It's hard when you feel like the tournament then just escapes from you right at the end. Certainly for me, being the first time in contention at a major, to have that happen right at the end as opposed to like early in the week when you don't end up knowing if that's going to cost anything down the line, I'd say at the end of the tournament, that it makes it hurt a lot more.' Smashed by the setback, Hatton also bogeyed the last, but says it wasn't the Major chance that got to him as he added: 'No. I've been nervous before, trying to win tournaments. And it felt the same as that, to be honest. I don't think that's a bad thing. I think I've proved to myself that I can handle my nerves because I've won big tournaments. Yeah, a major would have been nice to add to the list, but it didn't work out on this occasion, but I know that I feel like I handled myself pretty well. Just I'm sad with how it ended up finishing for me.'

Alejandro Garnacho makes new club decision as three lead race for Man Utd ace

Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho appears to have his days numbered at Old Trafford but fans are waiting eagerly to learn where he will be playing next season Argentina star Alejandro Garnacho wants to stay in the Premier League if he leaves Manchester United this summer, it has been claimed. The 20-year-old isn't thought to be in Ruben Amorim's plans. with United expected to cash in as they rebuild their squad under the Portuguese. Napoli and Chelsea were both linked with January moves for the South American, who played his 100th game for United last season. Chelsea are thought to be among the interested parties this summer as well, after the Blues opted against a permanent move for United loanee Jadon Sancho. ‌ According to The Mail, staying in the Premier League is "a priority" for Garnacho. Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are the three English sides said to be in the mix. ‌ Napoli are also understood to still be keen on bringing Garnacho to Serie A, as they look to strengthen a side which won the Scudetto last season. They have money to spend, having sold Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain in January. Back in May, Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid were also named as potential suitors. Leverkusen have appointed former United boss Erik ten Hag as their new manager, potentially leading the way for a reunion with Garnacho. United are believed to be ready to listen to offers for any squad member as Amorim gears up for a first summer in charge. Garnacho's future was already the subject of significant speculation, with the youngster appearing furious at being benched for the Europa League final. "Up until the final, I've played every round, and today to play 20 minutes… I don't know. I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens after,' he said. Mirror Football understands Amorim has already told Garnacho to look for a new club. In the meantime, the Red Devils have made their first new addition with Matheus Cunha joining from Wolves and continue to be heavily linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. ‌ It remains to be seen whether Napoli's interest in Garnacho will remain as strong after their swoop for Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian international has joined on a free transfer after a decade in the Premier League. Napoli already have one of Garnacho's former team-mates on their books in the form of Scott McTominay. The midfielder joined from Manchester United last summer and scored 12 Serie A goals in his first season in the competition - with Romelu Lukaku, another ex-United man, the only Napoli player to score more.
