Teen killer who stabbed Brit mum to death has sentence REDUCED as heartbroken widower asks ‘how much is a life worth?'

A TEEN killer who stabbed a Brit mum to death will be released from prison more than one year early - sparking further heartbreak for the victim's family.
Expat Emma Lovell, 41, was killed by a knife-wielding 17-year-old outside her home in Brisbane, Australia, on Boxing Day in 2022.

Her heartbroken widower Lee was left "devastated" by the news, saying that the initial sentence was insufficient to begin with.
The teen previously pleaded guilty to stabbing Emma in the heart and her husband, Lee, in the back during the home invasion at North Lakes.
The youngster, who cannot be named, was sentenced to 14 years in prison, the maximum sentence.

At the time, children found guilty of murder could only be sentenced to 10 years behind bars - unless the court deemed the crime especially heinous.
But in December 2024, new Premier David Crisafulli brought in 'Adult Crime, Adult Time' laws, setting a minimum 20-year non-parole term.
These new rules do not apply to old cases, and so an appeal made by the teen was heard under the old law.
His lawyers argued the judge made mistakes, ignored his personal circumstances, and gave a sentence that was 'manifestly excessive'.

The state's new Attorney-General, Deb Frecklington, is now weighing up whether to make an appeal to the High Court.
Emma's husband told Courier Mail: "I don't know what to say, I'm shocked that they can put more of a value to someone's freedom than someone's life.
"I just don't feel justice has been served one bit for what happened to Emma."

He added: "Seems like all you are doing now is saying to people to commit an offence and not much will happen.
Lovell explained that he hoped the new laws would help to counter the state's youth crime wave.

He accused the justice system of "not doing its job", adding that the teen's appeal should have increased his sentence instead of decreasing it.
Meanwhile the Attorney-General said the decision was "an unacceptable outcome".
In 2024, chilling CCTV revealed the moment the two teen burglars broke into Emma's home before she was stabbed to death.
Footage released by the Supreme Court of Queensland showed the first moments of the horror break-in, with one of the thugs testing the front door before signaling to his accomplice with a thumbs-up gesture.
Emma and husband Lee were awakened by their dogs barking at around 11.30pm.

During the fight, Lee was stabbed, and Emma knifed in her chest.
In the footage audio, harrowing threats were also captured.

The phrase "I'll kill you" and the word "stop" were heard multiple times, as both Emma and Lee fought for their lives.
According to court testimony, the defence claimed that the second teen was the one yelling "stop" during the incident, but the evidence painted a chilling picture of a violent attack.
The main attacker who delivered the fatal blow admitted to the murder and received the 14-year prison sentence.
The second teen was acquitted of murder and instead found guilty of burglary and assault causing bodily harm in company during a judge-only trial in October.
Emma and Lee, originally from Ipswich, relocated to Australia in 2011 after first visiting the country in 2002.

The dad-of-two shared that his daughters' lives would never be the same and revealed he is now contemplating moving his family back to the UK.
He previously said: "I feel like Boxing Day 2022 was like a sliding door moment for us.
"Our life should have been going in one direction, and yet, here I am, because of the actions of you and your co-offender taking away my family's right to expect peace, security, and safety within our family home.
"Now I am forced to play a role: the role of a grieving husband, a victim of assault, and a father, trying to make his family feel safe in our home again."

British dad found dead in water during Turkey holiday boat trip with his son

A fundraiser has been set up to help the family of Scottish dad John Nelson, 47, who was found dead in the water, while on holiday with his son, near Marmaris in Turkey A Brit family's holiday ended in tragedy after a loving dad was found dead in water while on a boat trip near Marmaris in Turkey. ‌ John Nelson, from Arbroath in Scotland, was on vacation with his son Josh and Josh's girlfriend Sharon Stuart, when he was died on July 31 off the coast of Turnuc. ‌ Sailors from others boats pulled the 47-year-old from the water and passed him into the care of paramedics and the Coastguard, but sadly nothing could be done to save him. An investigation by the local police into the dad's death has now been launched. ‌ Paying tribute to his dad online, Josh wrote: "While we were away on a family holiday, my dad's life was tragically taken in an accident at sea. It's a loss that has shaken my whole world and one I'm still struggling to put into words. "My dad was my role model, my biggest supporter and my best friend. We shared so many laughs, deep conversations and special moments together. "Over the last few years, I watched him transform his health, overcome many obstacles and push through some of life's biggest struggles. He came out stronger, happier and more full of life than ever before. He truly cherished every day he was given." Now, John's family have set up a fundraiser to help cover his funeral costs, the Daily Record reports. Josh added: "Many of you know me from Impact Carnoustie, where I work as a personal trainer. "My work and community mean so much to me and it's hard to step away at a time like this - but my family and I are now facing the difficult task of arranging the funeral and covering the costs. ‌ "I've set up a fundraiser to help us during this heartbreaking time. Any donation, no matter the amount, would mean the world to us. If you're unable to donate, sharing this would be an incredible help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the love, kindness and support you've shown me and my family." A tribute from John's partner Sharon added: "We are totally heartbroken to announce the passing of John Nelson, whose life was tragically taken away at sea during our first family holiday in Turkey. "We are lost for words and devastated. John had turned his life around for the better. We were so proud off him and we're just so grateful he got the chance to spent this last time on holiday with his son Josh, living his best life. Our lives will never be the same without him." A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We have not been approached for assistance on this case, but our staff stand ready to assist British nationals overseas 24/7." A fundraiser has been created to help his family with the cost. You can find it here. A funeral will take place at Parkgrove Crematorium, near Friockheim, on August 27.

International manhunt for Brit after Magaluf 'hit and run' injures tourists

An international arrest warrant has been issued for Jack Benjamin Hulme, 31, after he allegedly mowed down two people, including a teenage Brit, in a shocking Magaluf 'hit and run' An international manhunt has been launched for a British man accused of mowing down two tourists, including a UK teenager, in a horror Magaluf 'hit-and-run'. ‌ An arrest warrant has been issued for Jack Benjamin Hulme, 31, who was released on bail by a Spanish judge after 36 hours in police custody. The Brit is now a wanted man after he failed to respond to attempts to contact him by court officials. ‌ The fugitive Brit had allegedly been drinking before driving at a group of people in his hire car and knocking down a 19-year-old British man while sending a 20-year-old Polish woman flying. It comes after video of the moment a family attacks a woman complaining over a child kicking chair on flight emerged. ‌ Another three people next to the victims - a woman they had been chatting to and two men a couple of feet away - managed to run out of the way and reach safety as the car approached at speed and veered towards them. The 31-year-old, who faces extradition following his eventual arrest, is now facing trial on five offences. Shocking footage of the horror moment, from March 30, 2023, showed the Polish woman was left unconscious on her back with her shirt open. Hulme allegedly rowed with a British man whose girlfriend had gotten into a scrap with his partner, before the horror collision. The suspect was said to have left the scene in a rage before mounting the pavement outside a fast-food restaurant and allegedly injuring two people, who were not involved in the row. Miraculously they survived without serious injury and they were described as being "in the wrong place at the wrong time". Hulme was arrested at nearby Son Matias beach on suspicion of attempted homicide after the incident after a police manhunt, but was charged with lesser crimes which include two counts of wounding, reckless driving, and a drink-drive offence. ‌ Police, before being marched to court in handcuffs, said: "A British man who was on holiday in Majorca has been arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide following an early-hours hit-and-run incident in Magaluf. He was held at nearby Son Matias beach after a police search for him and his vehicle. "The incident was preceded by some sort of argument that is still under investigation. One of the people hurt was a Polish woman and the other a British man. Both were also on holiday in the area." During his initial court appearance, he is understood to have claimed he hadn't intended to run anyone over but couldn't see properly because someone had previously "sprayed him in the eyes" with an aerosol. A judge reportedly lost patience with the Brit, who had to register contact details with court officials as part of his bail conditions and agree to inform them of any change of address, and declared him in contempt of court before issuing the international arrest warrant.

Chilling true crime documentary about 'Scotland's most controversial murder' leaves viewers baffled

The Amazon Prime Video documentary delves into the brutal 1994 murder of Shamsuddin Mahmood on a small Scottish island that was a cold case for years before an arrest was finally made. Amazon Prime Video has a number of gripping true crime docuseries on its streaming platform with one recently uploaded programme about one of Scotland's most controversial murder cases leaving viewers hooked. The Orkney Assassin: Murder in the Isles was uploaded to Amazon Prime earlier this summer and recounts the chilling 1994 murder of Shamsuddin Mahmood, a waiter at the Indian restaurant Mumtaz in Kirkwall, in a 90-minute documentary. ‌ The 26-year-old Bangladeshi national was brutally gunned down by a masked man in front of horrified diners, including families with children. Before his murder, Mahmood had been planning to return to Bangladesh and marry his girlfriend after working on the island the year before he was killed. ‌ After the shocking crime, the assassin vanished, leaving a long lasting impact on the island that still resonates today. The unusual case is now under scrutiny once more after the Orkney Assassin landed on the streaming platform in June. ‌ At the time of the crime, 15-year-old Michael Ross was the main suspect and was questioned but was never charged. The case gained notoriety due to Ross' young age and the fact he was an army cadet but he was ultimately released. However, after a lengthy 14-year investigation, a breakthrough in the case occurred when a witness came forward and said they had seen Ross on the night of the murder. Ross was finally convicted of Mahmood's murder in 2008 at the High Court in Glasgow. Upon hearing his guilty verdict, the ex-Black Watch soldier attempted to flee court before he was arrested. ‌ Ross' car was later found in a nearby supermarket car park, filled with weapons and camping gear, which he had been planning to use whilst on the run before his escape plan failed. Despite all this, Michael Ross has always insisted he is innocent. He is currently serving a 25-year sentence at HMP Shotts in Lanarkshire, one of Scotland's highest security prisons. Since his imprisonment, he has attempted to escape three times, which he claims are efforts to bring his case back into the public eye. ‌ His family, including father and former policeman Eddy Ross, mother Moira, and other members of the Orkney community are campaigning for his release as part of the J4MR - Justice 4 Michael Ross group. Viewers have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the documentary as one wrote on Letterboxd: "Worth a watch but be ready to shout at the TV." Another wrote on X: "Put on the Orkney Assassin documentary. It's such a surprising case. I would have been about 7 when it started and I was on Lewis - which tends to have a lot of connection with Orkney - but I don't remember this case at ALL." ‌ A third remarked: "Watching The Orkney Assassin, and it shows the difference between the islands and the mainland. Stuff like this simply doesn't happen on the islands. Hell, they don't even lock their doors!" The 1994 murder continues to divide the Orkney community to this day with local newspaper reporter Ethan Fleet explaining "There are a lot of inconsistencies and unanswered questions surrounding the case and the investigations that preceded the trial, dubious witnesses whose evidence seems to be rather important in the case, changing positions. Things like that got my interest in that." Prosecutor Brian McConnachie KC added: "I think there's always going to be two sides." He described the Orkney murder as a "challenging" case and his most high-profile one, saying: "The number of times I have been asked about the case is incredible by comparison to any other case I've ever been involved in."
