New ‘thrill ride' action movie dominates Amazon Prime Video charts

Metro08-07-2025
Film fans have hailed a new 'thrill ride' action movie, which has soared to the top of the Amazon Prime Video charts
Heads of State was released on July 2, and followed Idris Elba as the UK Prime Minister, whose 'special relationship' with the US President – aka John Cena – crumbles when they find themselves targeted by a ruthless terrorist organization, and betrayed by someone in their teams.
They end up stranded in Belarus and, unsure of who else to trust, are forced to put their bickering to one side so they can both make it out alive.
Priyanka Chopra, Paddy Considine, Stephen Root and Jack Quaid are also among the star-studded cast, with Ilya Naishuller serving as director.
Despite only premiering on streaming a few days ago, the flick has dominated charts on the streaming platform so far, and is currently in the number one spot in both the UK and US.
Fans and critics have clearly been enjoying the action, as Heads of State claims a 67% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a 76% ranking from the audience.
Heaping praise, Robert M penned: 'Heads of State offers up that rare buddy movie with lots of action without taking itself too seriously.
'It develops its characters with adept writing and direction whilst it's lead actors bring in strong performances resulting in a thoroughly entertaining movie perfect for its 4th of July debut. I enjoyed this thoroughly [sic].'
Shelly S agreed: 'I enjoyed this. It was a solid action flick with some funny stuff and Cena is really becoming a decent actor. He knows his strengths and he continues to choose films that play to those.
'It's fun seeing Idris is a role a little less serious. There are some fun cameos and lots of crazy action.'
Josh H said: 'Fun and entertaining. A thrill ride we have all seen before, but I am here for it. Cena and Elba have great chemistry. A good watch!'
'Super fun buddy action comedy that reminds you of a well done 90's film,' Marcus A posted. 'Action was really cool and better than most action films now days but had a fun, timeless comedy back and forth, feels like Lethal Weapon but with US and British humor dynamic.
'The bad guys were forgettable, probably only fault with the film but worth watching.'
'We need more movies like this, pure, old, mindless action fun,' Red I added. 'Cena did a great job, all actor pulled their weight, the action was top notch. Great action flick, overall.'
The huge success of the film has many fans desperate for a sequel, and director Ilya already has plans in mind for where Heads of State could go next. More Trending
In fact, he is keen to reunite with Jack Quaid, who stole the show as CIA station chief Marty Comer in a brief action scene.
Unpacking the future of the films, the filmmaker told Screenrant: 'If [people] watch the movie and enjoy it, and Amazon feels like it makes sense to do a second one, absolutely. I'd love to get more of Jack in there [and] more of Marty.'
'If it's not Heads of State 2, I will be bugging Jack to work together again,' he added. 'Because he comes in, he knows what he's doing, he's an incredible energy in terms of his positivity and the desire to not just be here and do a great job, but to go above and beyond.'
Heads of State is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.

David Tennant's controversial crime drama remake now streaming on Amazon Prime

A controversial remake of one of Britain's best-loved crime series has unexpectedly resurfaced on UK streaming thanks to Amazon Prime Video. Starring David Tennant, 2014 detective drama Gracepoint was a remake of Broadchurch – which also starred Tennant – and originally premiered in the USA. The remake was controversial, with many questioning why the US would bother remaking a show that was exactly the same – even with Tennant returning to seemingly play the exact same character. Broadchurch starred Tennant alongside Olivia Colman and ran for three seasons between 2013 and 2017, becoming popular in the UK and around the world. It was nominated for a handful of Baftas and National TV awards and even secured a Peabody in America for its contributions to 'excellence in quality in TV'. Gracepoint was met with rather fewer accolades but was still well received by audiences. Gracepoint was created by Broadchurch lead writer Chris Chibnall and only ran for one season consisting of 10 episodes, with the plan for it to always be a limited series. Where the original Broadchurch series was set in the titular fictional British town in Dorset, Gracepoint was filmed around Canada's southwest coastline in British Columbia and set in California. And now UK fans of Broadchurch, who've been pining for something like the series ever since it came to an end in 2017, can get a hit of the good stuff on Amazon Prime Video. The series has dropped in full on the major streaming platform, and has been recommended to fans of new series The Assassin and James Nesbitt series The Missing. According to Amazon, Gracepoint begins 'when a young boy is found dead on an idyllic beach,' throwing a small town in California – and the lives of its residents – into chaos. The synopsis continues: 'A major police investigation gets underway in the small California seaside town where the tragedy occurred. Soon deemed a homicide, the case sparks a media frenzy. '[The investigation] throws the boy's family into further turmoil,' the description concludes. 'And upends the lives of all of the town's residents.' Calling it an 'unusual situation' to be starring in both Broadchurch and Gracepoint, Tennant told Deadline at the time that both his roles felt 'quite different'. He added: 'It's the same character, and yet it's not. It's probably easier for objective observers to point out how they differ, but they feel very different to me.' However, on release, some fans couldn't quite get over Gracepoint's similarities to Broadchurch, which would run for another two seasons after Gracepoint ended. @ByNillEarts said on X: 'I discovered the American remake of Broadchurch called Gracepoint… which is a less cool version of Broadchurch.' @SeptembersSong asked: 'I always wonder why David Tennent agreed to play the lead actor in two series that for all intents and purpose were the same.' However, the show had its defenders, especially among the Tennant fandom. @CooperHiller said: 'Broadchurch was so popular that they made an American version called Gracepoint and kept David Tennant.' @KikiBestOf18 said the Doctor Who star was 'as brilliant in Gracepoint as in Broadchurch,' and added that they were a fan of Gracepoint despite preferring Broadchurch. As well as giving Tennant top billing, Gracepoint also stars Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn, Hollywood star Michael Pena, and Big Little Lies actress Virginia Kull. More Trending However, while Broadchurch was a critical and commercial hit, Gracepoint received a more lukewarm reaction from viewers and critics when it aired in 2014. The series received a mostly positive review score of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 5.9 out of 10 – although 74% of users on the aggregator site said they would recommend it. Over on Metacritic, the series received a score of 62 out of 100 – praise from TV analysts mostly came for Tennant and Gunn in their two lead roles. Watch Gracepoint on Amazon Prime Video. Nicola Walker dealt major blow as Scottish BBC series axed

It has been axed after two series, with the BBC confirming that there are no plans to make any more episodes Nicola Walker's Annika will not be making a comeback for a third series on the BBC, it has been revealed. ‌ The 55-year-old star brought DI Annika Strandhed to life across two series of the detective drama, and left fans delighted. ‌ Nevertheless, UKTV, which broadcasts the programme on U+Alibi and BBC, has announced that despite the series concluding with a cliffhanger, there are no current intentions to create additional episodes. ‌ A representative informed "We are incredibly proud of the success of Annika on U+Alibi, but there are no current plans for a third series." Annika originated from the BBC Radio 4 audio drama, Annika Strandhed, where Nicola also voiced the principal character. ‌ The programme was renowned for its distinctive style, with the Marine Homicide Unit detective regularly breaking the fourth wall to speak directly to viewers. The drama saw Annika leading the fictional Glasgow-based Marine Homicide Unit, with the cast consisting of Katie Leung as DC Blair Ferguson, Jamie Sives as DS Michael McAndrews, Ukweli Roach as DS Tyrone Clarke and Kate Dickie as DCI Diane Oban. The star-studded cast also included Doctor Who star Varada Sethu joining as DC Harper Weston in season two, while Paul McGann played Annika's love interest Jake Strathearn, and Silvie Furneaux was her daughter, Morgan. Annika's axe comes despite its impressive Rotten Tomatoes rating, with an 83% score and a 96% audience rating. "Wow, just wow. Bring on season 3," one fan commented. ‌ Another said: "The marvellous Nicola Walker never disappoints, another great British crime drama. Scottish setting is beautiful." Someone else praised: "Oh my god this show is so underrated, it's so funny and Nicola Walker just makes it a 10/10." Another echoed: "I love this show. It is so understated but the humour really catches you unawares and I find myself laughing sometimes before I realise why. The breaking down of the four wall brings helps the viewer feel as if they are included and during those moments in which Annika speaks to us I find myself learning new things which is unusual for a crime show." ‌ Nicola previously admitted it took some time to get used to the unconventional way of bringing viewers insight into Annika. She said: "With most characters there is so much subtext. But there is no subtext with Annika because the subtext is her talking directly to you and telling you what she feels. By the end, we are going to know her as well as she knows herself. ‌ "On the first day, I kept stopping and laughing. It felt so wrong. But by the end, I was so into it, I was flicking looks at the camera all the time. I'm very worried about my next job now – 'Why does she keep looking down the lens?' It might have ruined me for the future!" But she explained the device was essential when it came to adapting the original audio drama. She said: "When he started talking about a television series, my first question was, how would you populate the world which has previously only been in Annika's head? Nick [Walker, writer] said immediately, 'We're going to break the fourth wall!' "So, she still has Norwegian heritage, she is still an outsider, and she still has a different way of coping with life and work, but the hook is the fact that this is the only detective series where the audience is the silent sidekick. We are in cahoots with her." Annika is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
