
'Too fat cannot, too skinny cannot': Employer asks for applicant's full-body photo
It may be normal for employers to request a headshot of an applicant, but is it normal to ask for a full-body portrait?
It is - or at least according to an employer at a cafe.
A WhatsApp conversation between a job applicant and an employer was shared in a TikTok video by user justwanttofindajob on May 20.
The conversation went smoothly until the employer asked for a photo.
"Please send me your recent photo showing your full height," he wrote.
Sceptical, the applicant asked for the purpose of the request: "Just wondering, may I ask what the full-body photo is needed for? I'd be happy to send one if it's relevant for the role."
In response, the employer sent two voice messages.
"This is a job interview, job interview we need to see photo," said the employer.
"I tell you why: too fat cannot, too skinny cannot, too ugly cannot, too pretty also cannot. So we have to see, okay?"
He then added that the request was "100 per cent relevant".
"If you go for a job interview, every interviewer will want to see your photo. Photo for job interview is 100 per cent relevant."
The video showed that the applicant has blocked the employer.
Netizens were alarmed by the request, with one writing: "That's a red flag right there."
Another quipped: "Sounds like chikopek (Hokkien for pervert)."
However, some noted that such requests are not uncommon in customer-facing roles: "I understand the full-length photo if it's for a customer-facing job. But the way he phrased it just weirds me out."
According to Ms Melissa Chua, senior recruitment consultant at Recruit Now Singapore, full-body photos are usually requested in specific industries like hospitality, where physical presentation is part of the job.
"In general, most employers require only a professional-looking headshot," Ms Melissa told The New Paper.
She explained that employers in certain industries might still favour good looks over ability: "While many companies claim to hire based on merit, there are still unspoken biases in certain industries. Some employers may have a mental image of what an 'ideal candidate' should look like."
Ms Melissa recommended that applicants clarify the purpose of photo requests, especially full-body photos, whenever they feel uncomfortable.
"If it still feels unnecessary or inappropriate, it's okay to express discomfort or decline."

The 30-year-old Hujic claimed in the interview that the now-deleted post was uploaded in order to drive engagement and was done so without her permission. In screenshots shared by Hujic, messages in a WhatsApp chat with the "social media manager" stated: "Post has over 6k engagement. Pay me 5k SGD and I take it down." According to the "manager", the profile was "down" and he had changed the access details to it. "When I get paid I give you back access," the manager said. Hujic told 8world that she had hired the freelance "manager" based in the Philippines to create engagement. Hujic, who used to work with DBS, had travelled to Bali in May and met a Singaporean man who she mistook for Gupta. A photograph of her with the man, later identified as Kumar H Subramaniam, was uploaded to her LinkedIn account, along with a post that claimed she had met Gupta. Gupta then commented on the post, clarifying that the man in the picture wasn't him. Account held hostage? Speaking with 8world, Hujic explained that she had contacted the manager after receiving a recommendation from a friend, and offered to pay $1 per engagement with her post to the manager. Not only did the manager have access to her LinkedIn account, they were also added to a chat group where Hujic shared pictures with her friends, she said. While she had initially uploaded the photograph to her friends and uploading it on Instagram, jokingly captioning, "Oh my god, it's him," Hujic claimed that she did not expect the social media manager to use this photograph to make the LinkedIn post. While this was happening, she claimed she had no Internet access as she was in Vietnam for a trip, exploring a cave. When she got back online on Saturday, Hujic, who runs a travel agency offering "bespoke" travel experiences, claimed that she was unable to log in to either her LinkedIn or Instagram accounts. Hujic and her partner claimed that they have since paid the social media manager an unspecified amount, but still have not been able to log back in, she told 8world. 'Racism at work': Kumar Meanwhile, Kumar clarified with local media that Hujic and her partner were aware that he is not Gupta, also adding that he has been mistaken for the ex-CEO before. Kumar, who works as a teacher in Bali, has lived in Indonesia for 25 years after leaving Singapore. "She said she used to work at DBS and we had a laugh," he recalled. He also remembered that they had joked about pranking Hujic's friends with his semblance, Kumar said. "But I never, at any point, said I was Gupta — and I definitely did not agree for my photo to be used to promote any business or social venture." Kumar highlighted the racist comments that were made following Hujic's post, specifically ones that referred to "scam centres" or alluding to all Indian men being "the same". While applying for a job in a cafe recently, a second-year university student was asked to send a full-body photo as "part of the application process". The 19-year-old, who only wanted to be known as Cheryl, had previously applied for jobs in the food and beverage industry here, but she claimed that this was the first time an employer had made such a request — something she found disturbing. Currently on her semester break, Cheryl, who is from Indonesia, told AsiaOne that she had applied to several recruitment agencies before finally receiving a response from recruitment platform, FastJobs. Excited about the upcoming job opportunity, she contacted the manager of a cafe located at Dhoby Ghaut to ask for more information. Upon reaching out, the manager requested a full-body photo of her along with her height, explaining that it was part of the recruitment process. 'Too ugly cannot, too pretty also cannot' 'This is a job interview (and) we need photos. Too fat cannot, too skinny cannot. Too ugly cannot too pretty also cannot. So we will have to see,' the manager replied through an audio message. 'If you go for job interview, every interviewer will want to see your photo. Speaking to AsiaOne, Cheryl, who did not want to reveal the cafe's name, said she felt deeply uncomfortable with the response and immediately blocked the individual. The audio recordings from the manager which were posted on Cheryl's TikTok account and have since garnered over 256K views and 12.4K shares as at May 26. Since the post, FastJobs has reached out to Cheryl to address the matter, before issuing a public statement on the incident. In a Facebook post uploaded by FastJobs on Friday (May 23), a spokesperson addressed the video that has been circulating online, which has since raised concerns about unfair hiring practices. "We do not support or condone any form of discrimination or mistreatment during the hiring process," the platform said. "If you ever come across job listings or employers on our platform who don't reflect the values of fairness and respect, please let us know. We take all feedback seriously and will take appropriate action to ensure our platform remains safe and inclusive." FastJobs added that it will continue to work closely with relevant stakeholders to uphold standards and ensure the platform remains a trusted and secure space for all users. Does appearance really matter? Cheryl's story highlights a common concern among job seekers — whether appearance still plays a role in one's career. Responding to queries from AsiaOne, several human resource agencies shared their views on whether such practices are common and if they are considered acceptable within the industry. Joerin Yao, HR practice leader at Enable Consulting, emphasised that requesting photos are appropriate only at the point of offer and must be accompanied by an explanation of their purpose. "Based on fair employment practices outlined by the Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices (Tafep), such recruitments should only be done for clear and legitimate reasons," said Yao. "Otherwise, asking for photos during the selection or evaluation stages may be perceived as discriminatory." Wong KJ, a human resource specialist at a local firm, also weighed in on the topic, noting that fair employment practices state that recruitment should be based on merit, skills experience or the ability to perform the job. "However, we understand that some roles require specific physical attributes. For example, air stewards need to meet certain height requirements to assist customers with placing luggage in overhead compartments," said Wong. Charmaine Choo, Director of HR and Partnerships at Execup HR Consulting, highlighted that while the primary focus of recruitment is on qualifications, skills, and experience, some roles do take other factors into account. "While our primary focus in recruitment remains on skills, experience, and qualifications, in certain roles particularly those involving customer interaction or brand representation—appearance may be considered as part of the overall impression," said Choo. Despite that, Choo concluded that factors such as nationality, gender identity, or other personal attributes should not affect job eligibility. "It's worth noting that while appearance may be a consideration in some hiring decisions, continued employment ultimately depends on an individual's ability to carry out the role effectively." Telegram ‘surprised' as Vietnam orders messaging app to be blocked

PHOTO: REUTERS HANOI - Vietnam's technology ministry has ordered telecommunication service providers to block the messaging app Telegram for not cooperating in combating alleged crimes committed by its users, in a move that Telegram said was surprising. In a document, dated May 21 and signed by the deputy head of the telecom department at the technology ministry, telecommunication companies were ordered to take measures to block Telegram and report on them to the ministry by June 2. The ministry was acting on behalf of the country's cybersecurity department after police reported that 68 per cent of the 9,600 Telegram channels and groups in Vietnam violated the law, citing fraud, drug trafficking and 'cases suspected of being related to terrorism' among the illegal activities carried out through the app, the document seen by Reuters said. The ministry asked telecommunication service providers 'to deploy solutions and measures to prevent Telegram's activities in Vietnam', the document said. After publication of the Reuters article, the government confirmed the measures against Telegram on its web portal. 'Telegram is surprised by those statements,' a company representative told Reuters on May 23 . 'We have responded to legal requests from Vietnam on time. This morning, we received a formal notice from the Authority of Communications regarding a standard service notification procedure required under new telecom regulations,' the Telegram representative said. 'The deadline for the response is May 27, and we are processing the request.' A technology ministry official said the move followed Telegram's failure to share user data with the government when asked as part of criminal investigations. The Vietnamese police and state news outlets have repeatedly warned people of possible crime, frauds and data breaches on Telegram channels and groups. Telegram, which competes globally with other social media apps such as Facebook's WhatsApp and WeChat, was still available in Vietnam on May 23 . Vietnam's ruling Communist Party maintains tight media censorship and tolerates little dissent. The country has repeatedly asked companies like Facebook, Google's YouTube and TikTok to coordinate with authorities to stamp out content deemed 'toxic', including offensive, false and anti-state content. Telegram is accused of not applying laws that require social media to monitor, remove and block information that violate the law, according to the document. Also, the document said that according to information from the police, 'many groups with tens of thousands of participants were created by opposition and reactionary subjects spreading anti-government documents'. The free-to-use platform with close to 1 billion users worldwide has been involved in controversies across the world on security and data breach concerns, including in France where its founder, Mr Pavel Durov, was briefly detained last year.
