Simone Biles And Riley Gaines Clash Over Transgender Athletes In Women's Sports
Simone Biles took aim at conservative pundit and former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines Friday. Biles, the most successful gymnast of all time, called out the former swimmer for her recent comments advocating for the exclusion of transgender athletes in women's sports.
Since tying for fifth place with transgender female swimmer Lia Thomas at the 2022 NCAA Swimming Championships, Gaines has transitioned from athlete to conservative activist, with her views staunchly focused on the opposition of transgender inclusion in women's sports.
Lately, Gaines' commentary has included spotlighting and vilifying transgender children and teens for their involvement in women's and girls' sports. On Friday, Gaines spouted off at a children's softball team on X, mocking the team's moderators for turning off the post comments.
'Comments off lol,' Gaines commented in a quote tweet. "To be expected when your star player is a boy,' she added.
Biles quickly vilified Gaines' comment, putting the conservative commentator on blast in front of Biles' nearly 2 million followers.
'You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race,' Biles said, referencing Gaines' fifth-place finish.
'Straight up sore loser. You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive or creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports,' she continued.
'Instead...you bully them. One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!'
Gaines was quick to fight back and diminish Biles' years of advocacy for mental health and safety in the sport, labeling Biles 'a male-apologist at the expense of young girls' dreams."
The former swimmer then attempted to deflect and insert transphobic talking points, insinuating that Biles should partake in men's gymnastics due to the gymnast's viewpoints.
'Maybe she could compete in pommel horse and rings in 2028," Gaines said.
Gaines gained notoriety for her fervent anti-trans views following a 5th-place finish at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Since the disappointing result, the former Kentucky Wildcat has become fully immersed in her chosen cause: preventing transgender women athletes from competing in women's sports.
She has testified before Congress, joined a lawsuit against the NCAA, and founded an advocacy center focused on what Gaines believes is 'fairness in women's sports.' The 25-year-old frequently aligns with conservative political figures, including current U.S. President Donald Trump. Ultimately, Gaines has achieved media success as a sports figure despite minimal success within her sport.
Conversely, Simone Biles has staunchly advocated for athlete well-being throughout her historic career. Biles champions mental health awareness and changed the narrative following her withdrawal due to 'The Twisties' during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Additionally, as one of the most prominent survivors in the U.S.A Gymnastics Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal, Biles used her platform to advocate for accountability and the establishment of safe environments in women's sports.
Together, the two figures could not be more at odds – both in terms of success within their sports and in their treatment of others.

Riley Gaines And Simon Biles Clash Over Trans Athlete Debate
Olympic gymnast Simon Biles and former collegiate swimmer turned-right-wing activist Riley Gaines traded barbs Friday over a transgender softball champion, whom Gaines called a boy before Biles stepped in to defend the player on X, formerly known as Twitter. Biles and Gaines exchanged words on X on Friday. (Photo by LOIC VENANCE/AFP via Getty Images) Gaines, an outspoken critic of transgender athletes in women's sports, pointed out the Minnesota State High School League removed comments from a post showing the winners of a softball state championship, with Gaines insisting the turned-off comments were to 'be expected when your star player is a boy.' Biles responded to Gaines' tweet a few hours later, calling her 'truly sick' and saying her campaigning against transgender athletes was all because she lost a race in college, referring to Gaines' fifth-place tie with trans swimmer Lia Thomas in a NCAA freestyle championship event in 2022. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

UNC baseball's ace pitcher ties a program record in Game 1 of Chapel Hill Super Regional
UNC baseball's ace pitcher ties a program record in Game 1 of Chapel Hill Super Regional Jake Knapp just did something no other UNC pitcher had since 1978. The hallmark of every strong baseball team is a deep pitching staff, which the North Carolina Tar Heels are extremely lucky to have. Jason DeCaro returned to UNC for his sophomore season, giving the starting rotation a major boost with nine wins. Aidan Haugh is back, striking out 79 batters up to the Super Regional Round. North Carolina's bullpen is even stronger: despite losing Dalton Pence to the 2024 MLB Draft and Matthew Matthijs to an injury for the 2025 season, names like Ryan Lynch and Walker McDuffie give Diamond Heels fans faith in the later innings. There's one arm who isn't just the best pitcher in Chapel Hill, but all of college baseball: Jake Knapp. After missing all of UNC's 2024 campaign with a UCL tear, Knapp is enjoying a near-spotless campaign: an NCAA-leading 14 wins and 14-0 win-loss record, a North Carolina-best 2.02 earned run average and 88 strikeouts. During the Diamond Heels' 18-2 drubbing of Arizona on Friday, in Game 1 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional, Knapp picked up his 14th win. In the process, Knapp tied Greg Norris for the most wins by a UNC pitcher – in a single season. To make Knapp's victory even sweeter, he tied the program record in his last home start – in front of the Tar Heel faithful. Knapp hurled seven innings and escaped early trouble, only allowing two runs across seven innings. Knapp worked around nine hits and only struck out three batters, then handed the baseball over to Tom Chimelewski for two nearly-spotless innings. If North Carolina advances to the College World Series, there's a strong chance Knapp breaks the single-season record for wins by a pitcher. I'm sure Knapp would rather the Diamond Heels win the CWS, regardless of how he continues to perform, but the new record would be a sweet second.
