Ex-BBC Football Focus host Dan Walker has voiced his conviction that Match of the Day "won't be the same" in the absence of Gary Lineker. The iconic Tottenham Hotspur and England legend has hung up his microphone after an illustrious 26-year stint as the face of the Premier League highlight show.
Lineker's parting words, laden with emotion, saw the broadcasting stalwart nearly moved to tears as he bid farewell during his last episode at age 64. The ex-forward's announcement of his departure from the BBC came shortly after he faced backlash over a tweet criticising Israel, accompanied by an emoji depicting a rat.
Subsequent to removing the contentious tweet, Lineker offered an apology and announced his intention to leave BBC for good when the 2024/25 season concludes.
His soul-stirring goodbye to BBC comrades unfolded on Sunday night, touching many, including Walker, who helmed Football Focus for over a decade before his transition to Channel 5 in 2022. In a show of camaraderie, Walker publicly hailed his former BBC mate following the season curtain-closer.
Taking to a platform, the presenter, once considered a potential successor to Lineker, communicated his thoughts: "Match of the Day won't be the same without Gary Lineker.", reports the Mirror.
Rich in praise for Lineker, he reflected, "It was always a pleasure to present the show, but it was always Gary's chair. Brilliant career on the pitch matched by a brilliant stint on the biggest football show on the TV."
At the close of the programme, Lineker expressed his gratitude: "Let me take this opportunity to thank all the pundits I've worked with over the years, you've made my job a lot easier. Rather like my football career everyone else did all the hard work and I got all the plaudits."
Originally, Lineker was set to resign only from the weekly Premier League highlight presentations on the show, while continuing to helm live FA Cup broadcasts and the 2026 World Cup hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, with plans to retire post-World Cup.
Nevertheless, his social media activity accelerated his departure from BBC. Last Monday, confirming he was leaving imminently, he stated: "Football has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember – both on the pitch and in the studio.
"I care deeply about the game, and about the work I've done with the BBC over many years. As I've said, I would never consciously repost anything antisemitic – it goes against everything I stand for.
"However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am. Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action."
BBC Chief Tim Davie remarked: "Gary has acknowledged the mistake he made. Accordingly, we have agreed he will step back from further presenting after this season."
Having helmed the premier BBC programme for 26 years, Lineker succeeded Des Lynam in 1999. He stepped into Match of the Day's leading role following Lynam's departure to ITV.
For the upcoming season, Match of the Day will be hosted by a trio consisting of Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan.

Liverpool star responds to rumours he could complete Bayern Munich transfer
Cody Gakpo has distanced himself from reports that he could be set to leave Liverpool for Bayern Munich. The 26-year-old forward enjoyed a strong season with the Reds, racking up ten goals and four assists in the Premier League to help the club win a record-equaling 20th title. But there has been some speculation that Gakpo's time on Merseyside could be coming to an end, with German champions Bayern having identified him as a target for the transfer window. Leroy Sane is expected to move on from the Allianz Arena this summer and Bayern are scouring the transfer market for a left-sided attacker to replace the four-time Bundesliga winner. However, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is determined to keep hold his fellow countryman and has reportedly told club bosses to do everything in their power to block his exit. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. The Dutch attacker has three years remaining on his current contract with Liverpool. Facing the media ahead of the Netherlands' 2-0 victory over Finland, Gakpo insisted he had no knowledge of any interest from Bayern. 'I haven't heard anything about it myself. I'm closing myself off from it,' he told reporters. 'Maybe my agent has heard something, but I'm focusing on myself.' Gakpo has been with Liverpool for three years having completed a move from PSV Eindhoven for a fee in the region of £40million in January 2023. In March, Gakpo credited Slot with transforming his game after a somewhat mixed opening 18 months in English football. 'I think he offered me a lot. The first thing he did was change my position slightly, so back to the left,' the former PSV man said. More Trending 'That was maybe a small change on paper but for me it was a big change. 'Then I had to come into the team as well and he gave me the chance to show myself. 'Obviously he's trying to help me to develop myself in moments in the game, how to be smarter, how to be better, how to get yourself more in scoring positions and giving the decisive pass and everything like this. 'He's helping me a lot. The manager and the staff, they try to help everybody, and I think everybody can see a lot of players are developing well.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. PSG president in fresh dig at Kylian Mbappe & takes swipe at Premier League fans
Paris Saint-Germain finally won the Champions League last week, but the French club's president could not resist making a dig at former player Kylian Mbappe in the celebrations Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has made a fresh dig at Kylian Mbappe in the wake of his side's Champions League win. The French side hammered Inter Milan in last week's final to lift the European Cup for the first time. It came a year after superstar Mbappe opted to leave the Parc des Princes for Real Madrid on a free transfer. Mbappe's decision infuriated Al-Khelaifi, with the France captain insisting he was moving to the Bernabeu in the hope of winning the game's biggest trophies. But Los Blancos have ended the season trophyless, besides the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. PSG meanwhile have claimed the treble, romping to the Ligue 1 title, lifting the Coupe de France and now finally winning the Champions League. The tensions between Mbappe and his former club are still bubbling away, even as PSG celebrate their successful season. Al-Khelaifi has brought those tensions to the surface once again. The Qatari has also taken aim at fans of the Premier League, who have frequently branded Ligue 1 a 'farmer's league' due to PSG's dominance. Al-Khelaifi highlighted the fact PSG had beaten four English teams on their way to being crowned European champions. "It's easier to score goals in La Liga than in Ligue 1," Al-Khelaïfi told Al-Kass Sports. "Luis Enrique proudly represented Ligue 1 and defended it against Premier League fans who called it the Farmers League. "We ended up beating Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal in the Champions League this season. Nobody thought we would win the title. We approached the Champions League step by step. "The match at Anfield gave us confidence. Luis Enrique told me before the match against Arsenal that we would win the Champions League. I was delighted with every goal in the final. "I could hardly believe the 5-0 victory against Inter. This club has become a source of pride for Qatar and France around the world. After this incredible achievement, the club is now profitable." Al-Khelaifi's comments come after Mbappe insisted he holds no bitterness towards PSG for their win. Instead, the France captain hailed Luis Enrique's side, branding them the 'best in Europe'. "Did I leave too soon? No," Mbappe said on Saturday. "My story was over, it had to end. No bitterness, I had reached the end of the road. I would have tried anything. It was just fate that meant it had to happen without me. "I was happy, they deserve it, they've been through so much trouble, I've been through that too. They were the best team in Europe. I don't remember seeing a 5-0. It's 100% deserved, they're becoming the team everyone wants to beat. "A blank season? Are you sure? We won two titles. That's the importance of words. We missed out on important titles. This year has been enriching. PSG winning the Champions League without me, it doesn't affect me. It's a good thing. I think that in a career we all have challenges. I'm a little more in the eye of the storm, it's good."

Al-Hilal turn attention to Bruno Fernandes' Portugal team-mate after failing in their pursuit of Manchester United captain
Al-Hilal have set their sights on another Premier League midfielder after their failed pursuit of Manchester United 's Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes turned down a stunning £200m proposal from Saudi giants Al-Hilal, according to reports. The Saudi side made the Red Devils skipper their priority signing ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup and were prepared to offer the Portuguese a tax-free contract in the region of £700,000-a-week plus bonuses, treble his weekly earnings in England. Mail Sport revealed that Fernandes' agent, Miguel Pinho, spent three days at the Four Seasons hotel in Riyadh last week, where he held face-to-face talks with club officials. However, news broke on Tuesday morning claim that Fernandes came to a decision over his future and rejected the proposal from the Saudi giants. And now they have turned their attention to a midfielder from United's rivals Manchester City. Foot Mercato report that midfielder Bernardo Silva is high on the club's shortlist after the club appointed former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi. The outlet adds that Al-Hilal have already submitted a contractual offer to Silva, who is currently in Germany ahead of Sunday's Nations League final in Munich. Silva, 30, is entering the final year of his current contract at the Etihad after eight years at the club. He has contributed 71 goals and 72 assists in 404 appearances for the Citizens, helping them win six Premier League titles and the Champions League.
