SpaceX May Be Failing to Get Starship Working at All
Last week, both stages of SpaceX's Starship exploded after returning from space. The Super Heavy booster flew apart as it attempted a landing burn over ground, and forty minutes later, the Starship vehicle itself disintegrated somewhere over the Indian Ocean.
It was the Elon Musk-owned space company's ninth test of its megarocket, the development of which has been plagued by spectacular failures. Failure is part of the company's formula for success, but the prolonged series of comeupances may be very bad news, according to engineer-turned-journalist Will Lockett.
"Dig a little deeper, and it's evident that SpaceX has hit an impasse," Lockett wrote in his newsletter.
Reusability is the Starship's raison d'être. If the booster and spacecraft can safely perform multiple launches, the idea is that it'll save SpaceX — and its customers — invaluable time and money that it'd otherwise waste building new ones from scratch. Its other selling point is hauling a massive amount of cargo in one go, facilitating ambitious missions like sending humans to Mars.
Yet two years on since Starship embarked on its maiden test flight, SpaceX is still a long way from achieving reusability or a hefty payload capacity. Regarding the former, last week's flight test was the first time SpaceX reused a Super Heavy booster, replacing four of its 33 engines. Regarding the latter, the test had Starship carry a dummy payload of a measly 16 metric tons. Musk has previously promised that Starship will carry 150 tons.
In previous tests, the booster guided itself back to its launch tower, where it was caught midair by the structure's "Chopstick" arms — an unquestionably stunning achievement. For its most recent flight, SpaceX ditched making a catch and aimed for a controlled splash landing in the Pacific. That's because it was testing sending the booster into a "belly-flop" to increase drag as it re-enters the atmosphere, thereby slowing its descent and reducing the fuel that needs to be burned by its retrorockets, the engines that kick in to assist the landing. Less fuel means less weight, which means more payload capacity, and so forth.
Inauspiciously, the booster exploded right after its retrorockets ignited, suggesting that it was the engines that had failed. The stresses of the belly-flop, it would also appear, proved too much for the craft's structure.
In Lockett's analysis, the booster is both too heavy and yet too fragile. If true, then engineers are in a bind: "Super Heavy Booster and its engines need to be heavily reinforced to survive such a landing (especially if it is to be reused, as planned), but doing so would add enough weight to render the entire exercise moot," Lockett wrote.
The upper stage, meanwhile, made some progress by reaching space and flying at orbital speeds. But in a repeat of the last two tests, it experienced a fuel leak — though instead of instantly exploding, it spiraled out of control and broke up in the atmosphere.
"The fact that it was yet another fuel leak that caused the rocket to fail heavily suggests they have a cascading stress issue," wrote Lockett. "They strengthened the fuel lines and the structure that supported the rocket engines after flights 7 and 8, but now a component further down the line has failed, suggesting that the stress is being transferred to other, weaker components."
Lockett's prognosis is sobering. "The lesson here is that SpaceX somehow needs to make Starship significantly more robust and lighter by well over a hundred tonnes if it is to conduct even one successful mission, let alone achieve constant reuse — which, let's be clear, is basically impossible," he added.
Wendy Whitman Cobb, a space policy expert with the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, summed up SpaceX's folly. "They are trying to do everything at once with Starship," Whitman Cobb told the Verge — building a new rocket, making both the booster and spaceship reusable, on top of boasting an unprecedented payload capacity. "It really is a very difficult engineering challenge."
All the drama with the exploding Starship also stands in contrast to the incremental approach SpaceX took when developing its very reliable Falcon 9 rocket. Attempts to recover a booster weren't made until years into its development, and even then, it was eventually settled that only the booster — not the entire spacecraft — would be reusable.
Whitman Cobb remains slightly optimistic about the vehicle's fortunes. "I believe SpaceX will engineer their way out of it," she added. "I believe their engineering is good enough that they will make Starship work,"
Not Lockett. It's taken SpaceX "nine failed attempts and almost $10 billion for Starship to not reach orbit with a fraction of its promised payload and to never land an upper stage or successfully reuse a first stage," he wrote. "All flight 9 has proven is just how much of a dead end Starship is,"

Musk touts driverless Tesla test ahead of Austin robotaxi launch
Tesla Inc. executives including Elon Musk promoted a video of one of its vehicles driving in Austin with nobody behind the wheel, hinting that it's close to launching its robotaxi service in the Texas capital. A black Model Y emblazoned with 'robotaxi' on its front door turned off South Congress Avenue in a touristy area of the city in the video, which was posted to Musk's social media platform X. Musk shared the video on his X account, as did Ashok Elluswamy, who leads Tesla's Autopilot teams and recently took over responsibility for the company's Optimus humanoid robot program. Although neither Musk nor Tesla have specified a precise launch date, Bloomberg has reported that Tesla aims to begin operating its robotaxi network on June 12. The company has been testing self-driving Model Y SUVs that will be used in the operation's initial phase. Model Ys with manufacturer plates and a person behind the wheel have been spotted driving around parts of Austin, including South Congress. The vehicles are expected to use an 'unsupervised' version of Tesla's suite of driver-assist systems known as Full Self-Driving. In a separate X post, Musk said the vehicle in the video was running on a new version of software. Musk has staked the future of his electric-vehicle company to robotics, autonomy and artificial intelligence. He's said the robotaxi launch in Austin will start small, with as few as ten to twenty vehicles, before growing over time. Amazon Kuiper second satellite launch delayed by ULA due to weather
United Launch Alliance said Tuesday it was pushing back the second flight carrying Amazon's Project Kuiper internet satellites due to "multiple weather delays during launch processing." The launch from Florida's Space Coast was originally slated for Friday afternoon, but it's now scheduled to take place on June 16, at 1:25 p.m. ET, ULA said in a post to its site. Cape Canaveral and other parts of Florida's Space Coast last week experienced several days of rain and high winds. Representatives from Amazon didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. It will be the second voyage ferrying a batch of Kuiper satellites after a successful launch in April. The first mission dispatched 27 Kuiper satellites into low Earth orbit, a region of space that's within 1,200 miles above the planet's surface. Amazon is working to speed up its satellite deployments so that it can begin delivering service to customers later this year. The company will have to contend with steep competition from Elon Musk's Space X, which operates Starlink. Amazon aims to build a constellation of more than 3,000 satellites. The company has to meet a Federal Communications Commission deadline to launch half of its total constellation, or 1,618 satellites, by July 2026.

Trump plans to keep Starlink at the White House operational despite rift with Musk
President Donald Trump said he would maintain the White House's operational ties to Starlink, the high-speed internet service owned by Musk's company SpaceX, despite their recent falling out. Speaking with reporters on Monday, the president was asked if he would split from the physical impact of Musk – such as getting rid the Tesla Model S that he purchased from Musk in March or Starlink technologies. 'I may move the Tesla around a little bit, but I don't think we'll be doing that with Starlink. It's a good service,' Trump told reporters on Monday. The president's comment arrives after he threatened to pull government contracts with Musk's companies, which are not only lucrative for the tech mogul but some are essential for the government – such as Starlink. Starlink provides quick internet access without the need for fiber cables or cellular towers by using low Earth orbiting satellites. When deployed, the satellites send signals to systems on the ground, providing internet access. A database of government contracts indicates the U.S. engaged in $4.1 million in contracts for Starlink in 2022, $1.9 million in 2023, less than $500,000 in 2024, and $22,000 as of June 2025. At least six federal agencies have active contracts with SpaceX for Starlink technologies. That includes the the Department of Defense, which has come to rely heavily on Starlink's services, according to NPR. When Musk began working as a senior adviser and head of the Department of Government Efficiency for the Trump administration, he reportedly deployed, or suggested deploying, Starlink technologies at the White House and other agencies. The General Services Administration considered using Starlink for internet access at the request of Musk's staff, NBC News reported. The Federal Aviaition Administraiton has begun testing Starlink technologies at several 'non safety' sites after Musk criticized the FAA's potential contract with Verizon, according to CNN. Tim Farrar, the president of the consulting company Telecom, Media and Finance Associates, Inc., told NPR that it would be tough for the government to move away from Starlink because other telecom companies are finding it 'very difficult' to catch up to it's abilities. Starlink has been instrumental in allowing people in rural areas to obtain internet access and helpful for militaries engaged in battle – the most prominent example being the Ukrainian army's use of Starlink to help fight against Russia's full-scale invasion.
