EEPC India holds open house session on India-US bilateral trade
New Delhi, June 13 (UNI) EEPC India, the country's apex engineering exports promotion body, on Friday held an Open House Session on the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) here in which participating members shared that buyers in the US are delaying orders due to policy uncertainty, making it hard for businesses to plan and grow.
Even as India and the US are holding bilateral trade agreement (BTA) talks, the US recently doubled tariffs under Section 232 — from 25 percent to 50 pc on steel, steel products, and aluminium.
Auto components face a 25 pc duty, while other items are taxed at 10 pc.
Unlike countries like Canada, Mexico, and the UK, India does not enjoy tariff exemptions from the US. This puts Indian exporters at a disadvantage, especially for low-margin products that are easily replaceable and sensitive to price changes, the speakers said.
EEPC India chairman Pankaj Chadha, emphasised that while the BTA may take time, India must ensure that its final agreement is on par or better than those of other US trade partners.
Aakash Shah, Vice Chairman of EEPC India, pointed out that India's penetration in the US engineering market remains low. India ranks only 13th among the US's engineering trade partners, with a modest 1.8 pc share.
'These small figures might offer India an opportunity to request more favourable trade terms under the ongoing BTA discussions to support its engineering exporters,' he noted.
The aluminium industry raised concerns about high power costs in India, which make production expensive. In contrast, countries like Canada and those in Europe, which use cheaper renewable energy, can offer better prices and gain market share in the US. Producers in the Middle East, such as UAE and Bahrain, are also expanding rapidly.
EEPC India members appreciated the Government's support in dealing with various challenges which hit the industry from time to time.

As Centre mulls easing norms for local telecom gear makers, GX Group flags import surge risk
New Delhi: Relaxation in value-addition norms for domestically-manufactured telecom equipment without proper guardrails may enhance risk of imports from non-trusted sources, a top official of GX Group has said. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has started a review of local value-addition norms in telecom equipment following reports that manufacturers are facing a challenge in achieving 50-60% local content in electronic and telecom products due to limited component ecosystem in the country. The move comes at a time when the government has rolled out a Rs 23,000-crore electronics component manufacturing scheme to enhance local value addition in domestically manufactured electronic products. "The consideration of a review to local content norms is a welcome move, however, relaxations need to come with caution on specific components. "Reducing value addition without utmost caution can enhance risk of increase in imports from non-trusted nations," GX Group CEO Paritosh Prajapati told PTI. GX Group is a beneficiary under the telecom sector's production linked incentive (PLI) scheme. The company has its manufacturing facility in Manesar and a research and development centre in Chennai. "The security-sensitive telecom equipment segment is already being infested from imported products, which is mitigating growth of indigenous production under telecom PLI scheme ," Prajapati said. The DoT on June 3 invited comments on the review of the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India ) from industry bodies -VoICE, TEMA, ICEA, COAI and MAIT, original equipment makers --Tejas, VVDN, HFCL, Nokia, Ericsson and CISCO. It has also invited comments from electronics manufacturing services companies Dixon, Syrma, Neolync and Jabil as well as public sector firms like BSNL and TCIL. The DoT has given 30 days for stakeholders to submit their comments. Prajapati said that GX Group and other industry stakeholders have been completely focused on indigenisation mandates and have built a robust local manufacturing ecosystem along with local R&D and IP rights in the past few years. He said that given the Indian component space is still growing somewhat, relaxations of the norms may bring in some relief to the industry for specific components only to ensure that Indian players become more competitive. "Foreign companies coming in to cater to the diverse Indian market should also invest in R&D within the country and make efforts to maximise local production of required components and sub-components," Prajapati said. He said that there are instances wherein global players expand into the market but rely on assembling of products rather than creating products and adding value, in a way not investing in the local economy but only ready to cater to the market demand and enhance revenues. "Relaxation in value addition norms should be accompanied with conditions like technology transfer, timeline for capacity development in India, phase-wise manufacturing programme, etc," Prajapati said.

Yusuf Pathan campaigns for Anvar in Nilambur
All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha member and former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan campaigned for TMC State convener and Independent candidate P.V. Anvar in the Nilambur Assembly byelection on Sunday. Mr. Pathan took part in a roadshow along with Mr. Anvar on Sunday evening. Dozens of supporters on motorbikes joined the roadshow. Large crowds had gathered along the road from Vadapuram to Nilambur town to greet Mr. Pathan. Before joining the roadshow, Mr. Pathan played cricket with a group of youngsters at Media Sports Turf. He batted while the local youth bowled to him. One of them bowled the former Indian player out, and said it was his dream wicket. Addressing the media later, Mr. Pathan said that Mr. Anvar would not only influence the election results in Nilambur, but also become the player of the match. 'Mr. Anvar is so dear to the people of Nilambur, and he works for them. He has been working for the people of Nilambur for nine years,' he said. Mr. Pathan said that the Trinamool Congress could make changes in Kerala too. He added that Mr. Anvar had the blessing of Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee.

India Issues Fresh Advisory For Nationals In Israel Amid Iranian Strikes
New Delhi: India on Sunday issued a fresh advisory for nationals in Israel as tensions in the Middle East continued to rise. The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv asked all Indians to stay vigilant and avoid any unnecessary movement while adhering to the safety protocols issued by the Israeli authorities. "The Embassy of India in Tel Aviv is in touch with members of the Indian community in Israel, including caregivers, workers, students, businessmen and tourist groups. All necessary measures are being taken to ensure their safety and well-being," said the Embassy's statement. It added that India is monitoring the situation closely and is in regular touch with the Israeli authorities. "All Indian nationals are once again advised to stay vigilant, strictly avoid any unnecessary movement and adhere to the safety protocols as advised by the Israeli authorities and home front command ( Safety and security of Indian nationals is most paramount for us," the advisory said. The embassy also issued telephonic (+972 54-7520711 or +972 54-3278392) and email Helplines for any Indians who are in distress in Israel. The advisory came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the evolving situation over Tel Aviv's operation 'Rision Lion'. In an earlier advisory on Saturday, India has asked its nationals in Israel to remain alert and follow local safety and emergency protocols. Israel and Iran, meanwhile, continued to launch fresh attacks on each other into Sunday, killing scores of people on both sides. Tehran said at least 138 people were killed in Israel's onslaught since Friday, including 60 on Saturday, half of them children, when a missile brought down a 14-storey apartment block in Tehran. Iranian missile fire targeting Israel in response killed at least 10 people overnight, according to Israeli authorities, pushing the number of deaths to 13 since Iran began its retaliatory strikes Friday, with 380 reported injured. With no let-up in sight, US President Donald Trump on Sunday urged Iran and Israel to "make a deal" and bring their deadly exchange of strikes to an end. "Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal," Trump said on his Truth Social media platform, adding that there are "many calls and meetings now taking place" on the issue and that peace could be achieved "soon" between the longtime adversaries.
