Lowry back in his happy place at Royal Portrush where mural depicts 'special' 2019 win
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — A mural of Shane Lowry holding aloft the claret jug adorns the side wall of a house just across the road from Royal Portrush.
For the people in this part of Northern Ireland, it is a piece of art that serves as a constant reminder of not just one of the great victories in the British Open's 165-year history but one of the great moments for Irish sport.

Six years later, Lowry is back on the Antrim coast looking to do it all over again.
'I didn't know what to make of it at the start,' Lowry said of the mural that immortalized the best golfing day of his life, 'and then when they did it, people kept sending me pictures.
'Everyone that comes up here sends me pictures standing beside it. Some of them I can't say what they were doing in it,' he added, laughing, 'but it is very special. I've done something special in my life.'
And, boy, did he celebrate it.
There's video of Lowry, a beer in one hand and the silver claret jug in the other, singing Irish folk song 'The Fields of Athenry' in a bar in Dublin hours after his six-shot victory.
It sure wasn't the only drinking hole he visited in the Irish capital that night, which — to some — fueled the narrative of him being something of a party animal.
'Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy it from time to time,' he said, 'but I know when I need to put my head down and work.
'You can't be at the top level of any sport if you're not applying yourself well, and I feel like I do it.'
Indeed, the No. 18-ranked Lowry feels in a good place after being back home in Ireland for the past three weeks, skipping the opportunity to play at the Scottish Open — regarded as a warmup to the British Open.
Instead, he has played a slew of the best courses in Ireland — among them Portmarnock, Waterville and also Adare Manor, which is hosting the Ryder Cup in 2027 — in perfect weather.
Lowry, whose only solo victory since Portrush in 2019 was the European tour's flagship BMW PGA Championship in 2022, feels 'rejuvenated' and as prepared as he could be in his bid to become the first player to win consecutive British Opens at the same course since Tiger Woods at St. Andrews in 2000 and '05.
'Sometimes when everything is going really well, I get complacent,' he said. "I feel like when things are not going well is when I'm at my best.
'Go back to 2019 here, I had a meltdown on the Wednesday because I thought I wasn't going to go out and play well, but then that focused me in a little bit more.'
Roared on by a raucous crowd, Lowry went on to play the best golf of his life in what at times was rough and wet weather.
Few will forget the scene of Lowry — dressed all in black — marching to the 18th green on Sunday with a broad smile and his arms out wide, to the backdrop of green-white-and-orange Irish flags and jubilant umbrella-holding spectators.
'I came to a place that I knew and I loved,' he said, 'and it just all clicked.'
There's now a mural of him to show for it, even if being lionized in such a way makes him feel uncomfortable.
'I'm happy," Lowry said, 'I don't have to drive past it every day.'

Tadej Pogačar skips Spanish Vuelta to recover from Tour de France triumph
PARIS (AP) — Four-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar has decided against taking part in the Spanish Vuelta next month as he recovers after winning cycling's biggest race. 'After such a demanding Tour, we decided it was best to take a break,' Pogačar said. 'The Vuelta is of course a race I would dearly love to return to. I have fantastic memories there from 2019 (finishing third), but now the body is telling me to rest.' The Slovenian rider from the UAE Team Emirates-XRG was not included in the eight-man squad for the Vuelta, which will start on Aug. 23. The team will be led by Portuguese rider João Almeida — who retired from the Tour earlier this month after fracturing a rib — and Spain's Juan Ayuso. After doing the Giro d'Italia and Tour double last year, Pogačar had planned to ride both the Tour and the Vuelta this summer. 'The idea this year was for Tadej to return to the Vuelta, but the season has been a long one for him,' the team's sports manager Matxin Fernández said. "We spoke and agreed that the best thing for him now is to take a good rest and build up to his final season goals.' It has already been a long season for Pogačar, a versatile rider known for his unsatiable appetite for victory. In addition to his Tour title, he also won the Critérium du Dauphiné, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Flèche Wallonne and Strade Bianche this year. On the way to his fourth Tour title, Pogačar won four stages to take his Tour tally to 21, and 30 at major races, including six at the Giro d'Italia and three at the Vuelta. Only four riders have won the Tour de France five times: Belgian Eddy Merckx, Spaniard Miguel Induráin and Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault. Pogačar will take a break until September. He is planning to compete in North America at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal. 'I'm excited to go back to Canada. The races are tough but beautiful, and they fit my style well,' said Pogačar, who also wants to defend his world champion title later this year in Kigali, Rwanda. Iñaki Williams takes pride in being Athletic's first Black captain when ‘far-right is fashionable'
MADRID (AP) — Iñaki Williams is taking pride in becoming the first Black captain for Athletic Bilbao at a time when he said the 'far-right is fashionable.' The 31-year-old Williams, one of the first Black players to ever join the club, will take over as the squad's main caption this season. Athletic historically has had few Black players because it only fields people from Spain's northern Basque Country region or adjoining areas. Williams and his younger brother, Nico, were born in the northern industrial city of Bilbao from Ghanaian parents who made the long journey to Europe looking for a better life. 'This means a lot,' Williams said in a news conference. 'It's seems like destiny that my mom and dad gave birth to me in Bilbao 31 years ago,' Williams said. 'We are lucky to represent many people who come from abroad to make a living. And to be a reference in Basque Country and in Spain, is important for us. 'We come from humble families, and being able to express this is good for everyone,' he said. 'It seems like the far-right is fashionable, and those of us who have a voice have to keep working and keep proving people wrong and keep overcoming barriers.' Both Williams brothers, who have been subjected to racist insults in Spain, have been playing for Athletic since their youth. Iñaki Williams chose to play for Ghana's national team at the last World Cup, while his 23-year-old brother Nico has been a regular in Spain's squad.
